Russia criticizes Friends of Syria effort

Russia's top diplomat took a shot at the Western and Arab attempts to bring democratic change to Syria Tuesday.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov singled out the Friends of Syria, the coalition of dozens of nations led by the United States and the Arab League calling for tough action against the Damascus regime.

"There are outside forces that are not interested in the success of the current U.N. Security Council efforts," Lavrov told reporters. "They are trying everything possible to substitute the Security Council with various unofficial formats such as the 'Friends of Syria' or some other forms," he told reporters Tuesday.

"And (they are trying), with everything possible, to influence the Syrian opposition so that it doesn't work with the government in maintaining a cease-fire and setting up future dialogue."

Lavrov made the remarks as monitors tried to observe a U.N.-backed cease-fire that was supposed to be in effect since Thursday.

They are reviewing the government and opposition forces' adherence to special envoy Kofi Annan's six-point peace plan, which calls for a halt in violence, humanitarian access and an "inclusive Syrian-led political process."

Annan's effort is supported by the Syrian regime, Russia, China, the United States, Turkey and the Arab world.

After a relative drop-off in reported deaths immediately after the Thursday cease-fire deadline, violence has persisted in Syria. At least 47 people were killed across the country Tuesday, the opposition Local Coordination Committees of Syria said.

Nice excuse... I guess that is Russia's reasoning why people are butchered daily in Syria since Russia bullied their way into controlling the effort to make peace in Syria.

Maybe instead of making excuses, they could get on board with international efforts.

Russian foreign diplomacy is so outdated... Like watching a 20th Century lesson in "Real Politik" diplomacy.

Where and when did Russia but into Syrias affairs. Russia, not the USSR. Russia and Syria have trade agreements that go way back but has never interfered with internal affairs. Odd that even after a US backed UN resolution gets passed, one that Syria as a UN member will allow under as the article states in UNs 6pt plan, that US and others using non UN sponrored NGOs rush in with Hi/Tech radios and humanitarin aid to only where rebel groups are located, that groups supported by not yet UN authorized powes as a part of Syrian political proces are recieving aid by neighboring and US. Now just who is interfering?

Just wondering! Who paid for all the advanced communication equipment and just happend to have it and the means to deliver, and how they knew just where to deliver? There are millions of starving and are in desperate need of Humanitarian Aid and the volunteers that are trying to help have to make do as best they can. Over 100 millions were donated to a fund to aid Haiti and yet hundreds of thousands of them are still living in tents, w/out running water, sanitary waste disposal or medical help. and all that Bill Clinton and G. Bush who are managing those relief funds have managed to do is rebuild the NGOs buildings and build Luxo tourist facilitys. Not only that, while Haitians still suffer 10s of millions gakve not been spent or accounted for. Humanitarian Aid for whose benefit?

How would anybody know it was the USA? Communication equipment can come from anywhere and can delivered by anybody. You speak like Syria has any allies in the region. Besides Iran, every other nation in the region wants Assad to go and are more willing than the USA to use covert action.

@ Jersey Joe@ April 2nd CBS Hillary Clinton. Press Corp Briefin,g 04/09, Wall street journal, Agence France. Globe, It is no secret, There would Be No Freinds of Syria w/o US cash Hillary pledges 12 million MORE, NOPE SLIP OF TONGUE MORE. What was oncn only 3 main groups has now grown to 7 recognizable groups whth with the one largest that US HAD thrown there largest aid packages going ton while still large is loosing Syrian Supporters in droves as glready one group almost as large vying to be THE VOICE. Why the step up by US THE OPPOSITION GROUP WANTS AS LITTLE OUTSIDE INTERFERANCE AS POSSIBLE. Hillary and Ocomeona afraid of losing control of what US POUCHED OFF. Why and the HEL* is it that everyone at First denys US involvement and then when some one points it out the facts, such as Russia they then attack Russia as if this was still Cold War Days. No diff how many die because Our Spiritual Leaders are doing it only doing it in for Democracy sake, UH Huha!

Obama the Peace Maker, the One US women gays, and Librals all swoon and keen over whenever he or vision appears and the cold fingered flag wavers love to hate, is without a doubt the Greatest President of US History. Here HE* GODs names should always be capitalized* is no more than following the program that were formulated under Bush I, Clinton, and especialy under Lil Bushs Pentagons to take over 7 nations* sorry I forgot we call them countrys when we plan to invade* in 5 years. While Bush only talked to GOD, and failed to finish his mission in 5yrs so Change of and to a more Liberal GOD took over. CNN deserves some credit as they made multiple newscast as the plans were first revealed by authorative sources. It is not Russias fault that they seem to be able to read and understand what they read better than most Americans.

OBAMA did Order updated plans just in case this plan HE and HIlLLARY set in motiom failed, Americans always at least a backup plan and if that plan fails they can always depend upon the millitary and their flag wavers to lay the faiure upon the Ball less civilians.
