Gotta Watch: Rough plane landings

Imagine being aboard a commercial airliner as it violently bucks and bumps through rough winds. Or, the feeling of terror as you realize the aircraft you're on has to make an emergency landing. You've gotta watch how some pilots handled intense moments like these - all caught on camera.

Wind whips jetliner across runway

High winds in Bilbao, Spain, made normally routine landings treacherous. Watch the video to find out what pilots can learn from crabs -- yes, crabs -- to get their aircraft safely on the ground.

iReporter relives near-plane crash

Listen to CNN iReporter Dave Gering vividly explain his turbulent flight from Munich, Germany, to Hamburg in 2008. You may be surprised to learn what passengers weren't doing as the pilot struggled to get the plane on the ground.

'We're gonna be in the Hudson'

We all remember US Airways flight 1549's safe emergency landing in the Hudson River back in 2009. It made Captain C.B. "Sully" Sullenberger a household name and earned him unending praise as a hero. This spine-tingling video puts you right in the middle of the action. Listen to the calm, matter-of-fact conversation between "Sully" and the control tower as they try to find a safe place to land.

anon.....DUH, by posting you have been counted as traffic for the article. Once you've come to the page, you are now traffic for the article, even if you don't watch the video all the way through!

CNN I am going elsewhere for my news. The constant ads that you cant cancel or skip are basically making me bail. Put the damn ads on the side where I am not forced to see them. I understand you need revenue but I can see these videos for free elsewhere without being forced to watch 30 second ads. Thanks.

I am having a hard time understanding how the commentators can joke about this video and no one at the network is, in turn, reading them the riot act. One of the commentators has the audacity to say "I love watchng this." Stated differently, he would love watching people terrified out of their minds. I have been in two scary landings. Let me be the first to disabuse these knuckleheads that anyone on the flights that I was on were in any way enjoying themselves. When your seatmate starts to tear up thinking that the plane may crash, this is not fun. I find these commentators remarks completely appalling. IMO.

That video is amazing! As a pilot myself I have to applaud that pilot. He did exactly what was supposed to be done, crabbing. It was obvious the wind was horrific and I know it's scary for passengers which is hard. His go around was classic as well. This is why we land at high speeds, in case we have to do a go around. We practice for go arounds like you wouldn't believe. I could watch this video all day long myself because it's amazing how he pulled out of it. Glad he was able to talk ATC out of using that runway as well. Not sure why they were using that runway anyway since they had another that was better for landing in to the wind. Amazing footage!

Agreed. I'm not a pilot, but I'm a not-so-good flyer, and I read as much about it as I can. Thankfully, I know about crabbing... if I didn't, I probably would have had a nervous breakdown on 2 or 3 of the flights I've been on.

That happened to me while landing near Branson, Mo. It's the only time in my life I had to abort a landing because I feared crashing. The gusty crosswind was so crazy I couldn't ride the centerline without crabbing deep into the wind. Because of the gusts I couldn't easily transition to 'slip mode' to keep pointed down the runway. I was all over the place trying to play the gusts. So I aborted at about 50 feet. I had my brother and his family aboard so I was both rattled and embarrassed. I set up for another landing on the same runway (the only runway) and this time it was smooth as silk. Go figure. I once saw a plane land in a crabbed condition. It was ugly. The front end went down and caught fire as the plane skidded. He spun around and came to a stop but managed exit the aircraft before it burned up. Touching down with the mains angled sideways is no joke as you well know.

The better solution would be to pick another runway or land at another airport with a different configuration. You dont have to land with such a high crosswind.

For small plane pilots, this is TYPICAL landing.

Im an expert at rough landins. One time i landed on the back of a whale. i had the hardest time taking off from it... i even flew completely drunk once..gotta love a bottle of absinthe in mid flight...i used to paint my nails while flying. hardest thing to do would be to put plane on autopilot while napping over the atlantic

I assume no one discovered, CNN fooled you all ?
This vid has been sped-up to dramatize the view.

If there is no news, CNN will make some news.

    How low can you go.
