Tigers outfielder arrested; hate crime investigation under way

Detroit Tigers outfielder Delmon Young was arrested in Manhattan early Friday and charged with aggravated harassment after a dispute with another man, New York police said.

Young appeared intoxicated when police arrived at the scene outside the New York Hilton, and he was treated and released from a hospital Friday morning, police Detective Martin Speechley said. The other person involved in the dispute, a 26-year-old male, sustained minor injuries but refused treatment, Speechley said.

Young was in police custody Friday morning, the detective said.

The aggravated harassment charge is a misdemeanor, but Speechley said the case is being investigated as a possible hate crime because of "religious statements made" during the dispute. If there is evidence to support a hate crime, the seriousness of the charge would be "elevated," he said.

The team issued a brief statement Friday afternoon.

"We are aware of the situation, however it is our club policy not to comment on pending legal matters," the statement said. "As we understand it, this is an allegation and we need to allow the legal process to take its course."

The Tigers are in New York for a three-game series against the Yankees beginning Friday.

The team lost to the Seattle Mariners in Detroit on Thursday afternoon before flying to New York.

Delmon played in Minnesota for a few years before going to Detroit. During that time, he was a class act and had no signs of going back to his old self (i.e. bat/umpire incident). This is really unfortunate. I hope he gets some help..

The white justice system going after a black man...is this news America? C'mon America, who do you think you are kidding? George Bush is guilty of hate crimes, so is Cheney, Powell and on and on and on...bring it back to the black man. It's all his fault! (Don't you think your prisons are crowded enough? Send another black man to jail on bogus charges so his white prison guards can keep their jobs. What a joke America, what a joke...)

Yes, boo hoo, so easy to blame the white man for all your problems. How pathetic. Everybody has to blame somebody, no one seems to know the meaning of personal responsability. Bottom line is, if you attack someone, you belong in jail for a hate crime. Doesn't matter if it black on black or white on white, attacking some one is usually done out of hate. Ughhh, when will all the racist just die.

Wow ... you really are quite the bigot, are you?

I guess you think that only whites can be guilty of hate crimes.

@crusader……. Who gives a stink what color the offender is? Are you good right now? If he is guilty of a hate crime I dont care if he is black white or green, that should never be taken into account in the manner you’re suggesting ( too many black men already incarcerated..)

Powell isn't black enough for you??? Just because he's black doesn't make him immune to the law. Also, if you're going to accuse Bush and Cheney (and Powell) of hate crimes, you had better include Obama and Boxcar Joe Biden. They're as guilty as everybody else...talk about the pot calling the kettle black!!! (No pun intended...)

Crusader – So your solution is to not arrest or charge any black men? No matter what the charge? Or do you just exempt them from hate crimes because their grand pappy was a victim? Certainly, you can't say that this particular black man is in some way down trodden or disadvantaged in any way. He's a MLB professional!

Why did this turn into a racial issue just because the guy arrested is black? The article reports this as "religious".

That said, way to under-report here. They comments are alleged to have been anti-semitic.

ok to two men get drunk and get into a fight one man doesn't want to press charges. i think this is waste of money and its going to get to a place where you can't say anything or you will be arrested. Reminds me of a place and time no so long ago

Whatya know, someone yells at an annoying panhandler and they get might charged with a hate crime. Did those 2 Jewish men from NY who attacked an unsuspecting [black] teenager (bashed his head with a radio) get charged with a hate crime? I'll let you figure that one out.

I'm not sympathetic to the actions of Young, but the absolute hypocrisy is sickening. I guarantee you that the racist ADL is calling for a maximum penalty on Young, but they had nothing to say about what happened above in New York.

The comments in the posts reflect the frustration that issues of race seem to surface. Within minutes the conversation deteriorated into name calling and cheapshots.

There is a bit of truth in what each of the comments and perspectives illustrate.

If the ball player were white and called an African American names that could be considered as "hate speech", many would call for a response, some would call for forgiveness, others would just be agitated.

Racism exists, it existed years ago and will continue to exist years into the future. Get over it. When clearly identified it should be dealt with by law regardless of the perpetrator's race, religion, or social status.

Am I African American, Hispanic, Anglo, Indian, or biracial?

This guy might be a real fool, but somebody, somewhere has to challenge the foolish concept of such a thing as a "Hate Crime." I have never heard of a crime committed that in some way did not involve degradation and/or hate. This is a McCarthyism applied to the law, which has all the fairness of asking , "Do you still beat your wife?"

More affirnative action reporting from CNN. The player is accused of yelling anti-semitic epithets.

Well, being that 3/4's of the staff at CNN would never have gotten into college without affirmative action allowing them to gain acceptance despite lower grades and SAT scores than the students that get rejected, what type of reporting are you expecting out of these barely literate, race baiting trolls with "journalism" degrees?

Yes Delmon can get into a dork streak, but he can play ball and that is what he does. Stop getting excited about all the bad stuff. Look at George Bush's Wounded Warrior project going on right now. Nothing on mainstream media but it is really good. Like Dali Lama said, Bush is a great guy and he just does good stuff.
