Panetta: 'No kind of silver bullet' to destroy al Qaeda

Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said there is no question that the United States is safer with Osama bin Laden, the architect of al Qaeda, dead, though he said there is no way to completely destroy the network.

Panetta's assessment came just days before the one-year anniversary of the U.S. commando raid on bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, that ended a manhunt for the al Qaeda founder that began following the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.

"Having been involved in operations even before bin Laden, it was clear that there is no kind of silver bullet here to suddenly be able to destroy al Qaeda and that includes going after bin Laden," Panetta told reporters Friday after a meeting with defense counterparts in South America.

"The way this works is that the more successful we are in taking down those that represent their spiritual and ideological leadership, the greater our ability to weaken their threat to this country."

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security last week warned of the possibility of terrorist attacks leading up to and after the anniversary of the May 2, 2011, killing of bin Laden. There is no specific, credible terror threat, the agencies said.

  1. avg. ignorant college grad

Source: The most comprehensive (and expensive, costing 14 million taxpayer dollars and 5 years to conduct) study ever undertaken to determine America's adult literacy was The National Adult Litercay Survey that found your avg. Ivy League university grad could not pass 1901s 8th grade final exam...reading(from paper print), writing(w/ a No. 2 pencil), and arithmatic (w/o a calculator)
About 1/4 of America's adult citizens have become totally incapable of deriving information from text alone...aka 'we need picture books now as when children'. And that's just our legal citizens. Comprende'?

Well, according to George Bush's little brother and Florida governor Jeb Bush, some people just can't handle the truth.
Jeb once told retired Naval Intelligence Officer Al Martin:
"The truth is useless. You have to understand this right now. You can't deposit the truth in a bank. You can't buy groceries with the truth. You can't pay rent with the truth. The truth is a useless commodity that will hang around your neck like an albatross - all the way to the homeless shelter. And if you think that the million or so people in this country that are really interested in the truth about their government can support people who would tell them the truth, you got another think coming. Because the million or so people in this country that are truly interested in the truth don't have any money."

This reminded me of a Bible verse
Matthew 6:5 "...Truly I say to you, they are having their reward in full."
Those who choose their reward now will approve of Corporate fascism

Undoubtedly Pakistani authorities had tipped us off on Bin Laden and the whole operation was carried out with the collusion of their military.
Neither side wanted to admit this for fear of back lash from the militants in Pakistan. Reports are now trickling out.
We do not need a silver bullet, we need to get our military boot print out of these territories. Our presence only fuels anti American sentiment and helps these elements.

  4. Ignorant American circa 1901

Interestingly, that 8th grade class of 1901 went on to rebound from The Great Depression and become the most productive individuals in the history of mankind. (GDP per capita) And all without ever taking Ritilin to focus. Pharmaceuticals were just being invented by the Bayer AG corporation, and wouldn't find their way to America's shores until after WWII when they became widely available.
    Can you hear me now?

Do you not see that prior to WWII Americans were stronger, smarter, more productive, wayyyyyyy less obese, low-low divorce rate, domestic violence hadn't even been phrased yet, Attention Deficit Disorder was somethind Hitler had, not an American epidemic. Suicides? Sure. When the stock market crashed lots of them...none due to pharmaceutical warning labels just now being worded by Nazi doktor pharmacologists. Children respected their elders and were able to pay attention to them. So many differences between before and after Nazi pharmaceuticals hit America's shores.
Can you hear me now? Do you, rather.

@Bogman...you forget. Harry S. Truman (US President during WWII) didn't even know there was such a thing as an atomic bomb or that his won government had been financing the development of atomic bombs for years...until he was sworn-in as President! And Truman was the freaking Vice-President when he got sworn in! In short, neither you nor President Obama really knows what goes on underground.

...and begs the question; who was President Obama swearing to when he took office? He had his hand on God's word the bible, not one of your books. Perhaps the next President should be sworn-in with his hand on his stock portfolio.

  10. Yes

"President Barack Obama outlined a financial plan in his February 24 address to Congress that meshes eerily with the fascist economic plan Benito Mussolini enacted after his ascent to power in Italy before the Second World War. John T. Flynn explained the economic strategy of Il Duce in his timeless book As We Go Marching, summarizing fascism thusly: "we can say that fascism is (1) a capitalist type of economic organization, (2) in which the government accepts responsibility to make the economic system work at full energy, (3) using the device of state-created purchasing power effected by means of government borrowing and spending, and (4) which organizes the economic life of the people into industrial and professional groups to subject the system to control under the supervision of the state."

Me? Of course I know what goes-on in the secret underground weapons facilities that got moved from Nazi Germany to dozens of underground facilities in Russia and the USA after WWII, with a massive underground building program financed by both countries taxpayers during the so-called "Cold War" with ti's sceary atomic clock ticking-down to doomsday when the terrorists attacked...errr, nuclear destruction of planet earth. I've seen 6 flying saucers with my own eyes, 3 of them flying-out the back side of Cheyenne Mountain, a massive underground structure originally said to be for NORAD. (North Americas air-defense command is located at Petersen AFB) And I was there when a fairly large electric generating plant was built just south of this mountain 20 some years ago, big enough to power a small city.
Really. They are using our own tax dollars to finance the scareing of US just as has been happening in Russia, who have more "area 51s" than you do.

@Yes...Bravo! Thank you for that. Benito Mussolini was almost as surprised as Hitler to learn that his side had been developing rocket and jet engines for years, technologies that Allied forces did not have, and deemed the making of a V-2 rocket impossible...until dozens of them were launched from Germany, left the earths atmosphere, and re-entered on London. As far as I know, at that time, neither Mussolini nor Hitler himself knew of Horton's flying wing or BMW 's model J38 Flying Saucer powered by 12 more jet engines than the entire Allied forces had. They were, however, well aware that their scientists were converting coal into gasoline and powering/lubricating fully 1/2 of the Third Reichs war machine on synthetic oil. That the father of NASA Werner von Braun had perfected the V-2 rocket engine was well known by both men, however.

  13. Remember...

When Germany invaded Poland, roughly 80% of the Nazi War Machine was powered by horses. France had by-far the mightiest military outside of the USA, and could have easily trounced Germany for invading their war-pact friends the Pollacks. But France (and GB) turned their backs on Poland as Jews were digging massive underground facilities for Nazi secret weapons production.

A woman burst out of the examining room screaming after her young physician tells her she is pregnant. The director of the clinic stopped her and asked what the problem was. After she tells him what happened, the doctors had her sit down and relax in another room and he marched down the hallway where the woman’s physician was and demanded, “What is wrong with you? Mrs. Miller is 60 years old, has six grown children and nine grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?” The young physician continued to write his notes and without looking up at his superior, asked, “Does she still have the hiccups?”
