One World Trade Center becomes NYC's tallest building

[Updated at 2:10 p.m. ET] More than a decade after a terrorist attack brought down New York's twin towers, their under-construction replacement became the city's tallest building on Monday.

The placement of a column of the 100th floor brought the colossal new steel structure of One World Trade Center tower to a height of 1,271 feet - surpassing the frame of the Empire State Building, which is currently New York's tallest skyscraper, by 21 feet.

Built on what was referred to as ground zero in Lower Manhattan, the building is expected to reach 1,776 feet when it is finished by early 2014. The Willis Tower in Chicago, formerly known as the Sears Tower, is the country's current record holder at 1,450 feet.

The One World Trade Center building will have three top-floor observation decks. Its first 90 floors will be designated for office space, and the following 10 floors will be reserved for air conditioning, heating, and electrical equipment.

Despite years of political infighting and real estate squabbling that delayed its construction, more than half of the building has now been rented, with a tenant list that includes Conde Nast publishing company and a Chinese real estate investment firm called Vantone Holdings.

In its shadow, twin reflecting pools are situated in the footprints of where the twin towers once stood.

A memorial at the site of one of the original World Trade Center buildings.

The names of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the 2001 attacks, as well as six people who died in the World Trade Center bombing in 1993, are emblazoned across bronze panels ringing the pools.

The steel beams were placed atop the structure on Monday, one day before the one-year anniversary of Osama bin Laden's death. The project is bringing a major milestone to the city and country, said Mike Mennella, the construction executive who was in charge of building the first towers and is helping to build the new structure.

"Today is a day where we can really look back and say the milestones we’ve surpassed and overcome are certainly more significant than the ones ahead of us," he said. "The building is in position now where we can see it coming from the top, and see it being finished off in a very, very significant way."

As the man who built the first towers, only to watch them fall during the terrorist attacks, Mennella knows just how important it is to be able to rebuild and start a new chapter in lower Manhattan.

"It's also big in the region," he said. "Seeing this building from all over the region - Long Island, New Jersey, New York - it's just a statement for the region that we’ve reached a real milestone."

Mennella said he came to the site on September 12, 2001, amid the devastation and always hoped he'd be able to be part of an effort to rebuild. He felt it wasn't just about rebuilding an icon of New York's skyline, but about helping heal and move forward.

"I think as people look at the building from afar and then realize the site that it sits on, the memorial it adjoins and what the site is about, what was lost here, and what is now being put back together - it's an exciting moment," he said.

It's sad how the truth is so distorted.. there were 15 Saudi's on those planes.. of course we don't want to punish the real terrorists, heck they have ownership of much of the US and over 1 trillion in our economy.. they pull that out, we'll be in a real recession. I just hope it doesn't get attacked.. and if it were, I can't wait to see how the Obama administration blames bush for it.. since EVERYTHING that's wrong today is blamed on what bush did instead of what Obama's not doing..... it's like the US Soap Opera, as the admistration turns

      Uh..what?

So the "real terrorists" have a financial stake in the U.S., therefore they attacked the U.S. in order to hurt themselves?

      Okay.

Funny thing is, every President has been pretty much the same. People who really think there is still a difference between the parties is hilarious. Everyone though Obama would take away gun rights but he has only increased them. People don't understand that every President only has as much power as congress allows them to have, hence the checks and balances.

President Bush had nothing to do with the terrorist attack but neither did President Obama. But even though I adored President Bush Sr, I think President "W" Bush was an idiot and I truly believe he and Mr Cheney should be trialed before the Hague as war criminals. They invaded a sovereign country based on lies. Americans were shocked at first when they found out it was a lie but we just got over it in a few days and continued on. He should have been impeached and then tried by the Hague. It may still happen. I read somewhere that Cheney says he is concerned about it. It probably won't happen. After 9/11 though. I fully feel we should have held Saudi Arabia responsible.

I think that the rebuild was a bad idea. and the reason is why build the tallest building again so another plane can crash it down again. I do not trust those people who did it and I do think they will do it again. I hope not but I just think is going to be done.. I would not take a job there for nothing at all let alone even go into this building it just shouts wanta die come here to work. I would starve before I'd ever go into that new building. I can say good luck to what ever and whom ever gowes into that building.

Yes, there were 15 Saudi's on the planes that had to trained in Bosnia, Pakistan and Afghanistan since their beliefs were shunned in their home country. So go after the Saudi's. Morons.

Becca – the fact that you see these ideas on TV, or read them on a website, does not make them true. People can make up completely false stories on TV and on websites. Here's an example – at one time, way back in the 1950s, the president of the Southern Baptists went on TV and insisted that rock and roll music was a plot by black men to sleep with white women. Lots of people nationwide assumed he knew what he was talking about, so they believed him. All because somebody said it on TV!

Here's another example ... in 1969, when we landed on the moon, there were people who went on TV and insisted that the whole story was a hoax. And there were others who believed them. All because somebody said it on TV.

Is its inhabitable space/floor going to reach 1776 feet? Inhabitable space is what ONLY counts for a building.

Not true Josh. Height with spire counts and that will be 1776'. Sorry the international community doesn't recognize your authority in stating what counts and doesn't count in building height. Maybe next time.

People suggesting the demolition of the original was an inside job are only half right. It was brought down to save lives in case it toppled. There was no conspiracy to destroy it, just a conspiracy to lessen the amount of destruction.
And all economies are fake, Pop. You didn't think the green paper in your wallet is actually a rare/valuable commodity, right? It's only what we pretend it can be.

Our government knew this was going to happen before it did. There had been warning before it happened. I did read this some where or seen it on TV that government officials their self said they had warning. SO wonder why they did not stop it or tell people to clear out of there. Maybe more could have been saved.

1776....another example of how the powers that be use useless patriotic suggestions to influence the masses into a useless united patriotic state of mind. meanwhile, they make much more important decisions than this everyday to try and destroy the true american spirit found only in the heart.

The New World Trade Center. Many New Yorkers see the new building as symbol of FAKE ECONOMY. They remember 2008 stockmarket crash, lehman brothers, madoff, bailouts, etc.

In 2012... The economy will be FAKE.
