Obama: Same-sex couples should have right to marry

President Barack Obama said in an interview with ABC that "it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married."

With his Wednesday announcement, the president reversed his longstanding position on the issue. It came on the heels of his own vice president and education secretary saying they were in favor of gay marriage.

According to an ABC blog post, Obama further described his thought process as an "evolution" that progressed as he discussed the issue with staff members, gay and lesbian service members and his own family.

He said he thinks Americans are growing increasingly comfortable with the concept of gay marriage and cited his own daughters' views on the matter.

“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents.

"And Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them, and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

President Romney? Are you on drugs? Romney is for Self Deportation. That means Obama has the latino vote 80% to Romneys under 20%. Romney has no stance on womens rights and his staff state there is no pay gap between men and women. Obama leads Romney with women 60% to Romneys under 40%. Add the fact that Romney was against the auto bailout. That means Obama wins Ohio. Romney has no clear path to reach the necessary delegates to win in November.

It tells me God is not all perfect after all. He should have known what was going to happen. He should have left the good Earth to the animals and not played around with anything remotely close to his image. Bad idea all around....

Crocker, I'm sure you were right...God was most likely very unhappy about unequal treatment of people who are equal in His eyes, but now that we are making a step for treating everyone the way our Creator treats us, I'm sure He will be pleased.

Thank the lord my fellow NC brothers saved the sacred right of marriage. I was talking to my girlfriend about it in her apartment in Raleigh the other day she couldn't agree more about the importance of getting right with God as Americans. So great to have so many like minded people in our tarheel state. It's a shame my wife doesn't agree with me. When I'm at the home in Charlotte I feel like her liberal northern education has messed with Kathy's head. At least that's what Cindy says anyways. Marriage is a sacred right given by god

Surely you jest, something about the south and education seems incongruent. I feel nothing but pity for people who believe education should come from a cobbled together hodgepodge of stories that are over two thousand years old.

At least that sacred right of marriage as defined in North Carolina still includes marrying your first cousins! North Carolina is on the wrong side of history on this as they were with interracial marriage in 1875. You should listen to your wife, you may learn something, it will be her that your grandchildren will hold in high esteem, not you, the hateful and bigoted grandpa.

Brother, no disrespect, but you are talking about your wife yet you also talked about your girlfriend. What's wrong with this picture? You support marriage, yet you seemed to be separated or divorced. Please first go reconcile with your wife, then people will be more inclined to listen to what you have to say. It's just a suggestion. 🙂

This is huge and absolutely wonderful news. Never before has a sitting President come out in favor of marriage equality. Obama has been on the right side of history his entire political career, and this just continues to affirm it.
