Obama: Same-sex couples should have right to marry

President Barack Obama said in an interview with ABC that "it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married."

With his Wednesday announcement, the president reversed his longstanding position on the issue. It came on the heels of his own vice president and education secretary saying they were in favor of gay marriage.

According to an ABC blog post, Obama further described his thought process as an "evolution" that progressed as he discussed the issue with staff members, gay and lesbian service members and his own family.

He said he thinks Americans are growing increasingly comfortable with the concept of gay marriage and cited his own daughters' views on the matter.

“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents.

"And Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them, and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

Life is too damned short to be sticking your nose into your neighbor's business, particularly to try to keep him or her or them from some of the damned little happiness life has to offer us.
Congratulations to President Obama for taking the high road here!

I think it's great he came out in support of it, but unfortunately, this could effect his run at re-election. It shows he's a flip-flopper and not everyone in the US still supports it. Let's hope it helps people see how brave he is, but humans are wired as judgmental and ignorant. Here's hoping.

You don't hve to agree with it personally, to support equal rights for all Americans. An individuals views should not suppress another citizen. That's not freedom, that's fascism.

"For those who base their anti-gay views on the Bible, please explain the following verse to me: 'If no proof of the girl's virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father's house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death.' (Deuteronomy 22:20-21)
How many girls would there be in the U.S. if this was implemented?"

For me LOVE is better then HATE. We you an I PEOPLE should live their own lives in there own way an not try to have or make other to conform to there beliefs an practices . If with in your own heart you come to love another person BLACK WHITE or WHAT EVER where is the harm. It's sad to say some Relegion's in the world fosters in some people hate an the wanting to kill other in the name of GOD. Do you really believe GOD if there is a GOD an I do believe there is a GOD condones KILLING I don't think so. If two people want to LOVE one another for get the gender or race I'm sure it's better then HATE or KILLING.

Wonder how many who now oppose gay marriage would have also opposed interracial marriage (and still do)? I remember certain Christian leaders prior to the 1960's finding Biblical justification for laws that separated races.

The more old bigoted people die and the more young reach voting age, the more the tide turns against those bigoted againsts gays. Obama knows this, he isn't stupid. This is a very calculated change in public appearance (despite whatever his true beliefs are).

I'm very proud of Obama's courage and I now have greatest respect for him as a leader. Discrimination of any type is wrong!
