Obama: Same-sex couples should have right to marry

President Barack Obama said in an interview with ABC that "it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married."

With his Wednesday announcement, the president reversed his longstanding position on the issue. It came on the heels of his own vice president and education secretary saying they were in favor of gay marriage.

According to an ABC blog post, Obama further described his thought process as an "evolution" that progressed as he discussed the issue with staff members, gay and lesbian service members and his own family.

He said he thinks Americans are growing increasingly comfortable with the concept of gay marriage and cited his own daughters' views on the matter.

“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents.

"And Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them, and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

Makes me proud! I was so tired of trying to justify his not just saying gay marriage should be a legal choice when I was sure he believed it. Way to stand up President O'bama! Even if you don't win re-election because of this you have my respect for saying it. Let the cards fall where they may, you wouldn't have gotten the red neck christian conservative vote any way.

The majority cannot demand their idea of morality for the minority in this country! Thank you Mr Obama for speaking out for the principles that this country was founded on.

I would go along with a civil union but not marriage. I can understand that gays want to have same legal privileges.

As far as marriage, this is an obomination. The primary purpose of marriage is to have children. Since this is impossible from a natural standpoint, then it should not be sanctioned or legalized.

Old people should not allowed to be married, nor should anyone who is biologically infertile.

      Yay for logic.

So you're saying elderly couples and infertile people should not be allowed to marry either, right?

So you're saying we shouldn't allow women who cannot bare children the right to be married? What about infertile men? Wise up and stop hiding behind the BS. You're a bigot.

Thank you President Obama! I applaud you for this courageous decision. This move shows a leadership that is so often lacking in our representatives.

I hope this is sarcasm! He does not believe in gay marriage. He believes in flip flopping to get the gay votes. He does not have a moral compass and will lie to get what he wants.

You should not be judging people based on bronze age fairy tales. We have actual knowledge about things these days, we don't need to amke up stories to explain them any more. Come join us in the 21st century, and leave the 1300's behind.

Obama is grasping at straws to get the vote. He is a con artist who will say anything to get what he wants. Does he truly believe in gay marriage, NO. He is desperate to get the vote, so he suddenly woke up and decided he should tell people he supports gay marriage. Just wait until after he is in office. The true Obama will come out.

Frank, this may come as a shock to you, but pedophiles are not exclusively gay or straight. That is not even part of this issue... how does that make any sense?

All I'm going to say is that it's a proven fact that Christians have low IQs. If you are going to vote because of religious beliefs, then you are brainwashed. I vote for who I think is the best candidate, and after all there is a separation between church and state.
