Obama: Same-sex couples should have right to marry

President Barack Obama said in an interview with ABC that "it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married."

With his Wednesday announcement, the president reversed his longstanding position on the issue. It came on the heels of his own vice president and education secretary saying they were in favor of gay marriage.

According to an ABC blog post, Obama further described his thought process as an "evolution" that progressed as he discussed the issue with staff members, gay and lesbian service members and his own family.

He said he thinks Americans are growing increasingly comfortable with the concept of gay marriage and cited his own daughters' views on the matter.

“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents.

"And Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them, and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

It's about time. I dont see what the big deal is. What do anti gay/lesbian people really want? Put them on an island isolated from the rest of the world? They are not going away and they are not changing. They are part of the human race, and more importantly they are human, just like everyone else..So just get over it and learn to live in diversity.

Sorry kiddo – much to your horror – PRESIDENT OBAMA will WIN in November and you will suffer another four excruciating years of torture while your hate-filled narrow belief system withers on the vine. And IF by some stretch of the imagination MITT wins...OBAMA still wins because MITT'S Healthcare Policy, MITT'S economic policy, MITT'S BACKGROUND and belief system are just a bit softer than the President's. The only difference is PRESIDENT OBAMA isn't afraid to say it, to do it, and not fall prey to all of the craziness we've had to endure watching the Conservative Freak Show for the past couple of years. You lose.

Society is going a completely different direction towards equality and such now... Religion, to me, is a taboo topic and it's pointless to me, although not to my parents (who continuously try to force it on me). It should not be up to a bunch of old men to make decisions like this; they don't have open minds and are trying to keep their own strict ideals alive. It's not fair.

I dont think Obama makes this announcement unless they went over the numbers about 20 times and thought it would help his chances and not hurt them – this announcement has nothign to do with standing up for what he believes in – its a fully calculated move. But it could backfire – swing states like OH and PA are still some of the more religious states in the union – not like the south, but this could do it for the second term!

Of course it's calculated. That's why Biden said it last week, and why Duncan did, too. It's an election year and he's up for re-election – it's going to be calculated.

I'm not saying that's bad, just reaffirming that's the reality of what's going on.

This religious claim is a huge waste of words. Show me where all the religious people are hanging out. There are certain big-box churches who bring the droves in, but the old time religions are folding like $3 suitcases. All the talk about Christianity is great, but not worthy of the allegation.

I think he just won a bunch of Independents who were on the fence unsure of what to do. This was a good message for the undecided. There are not as many narrow minded people as you think there are in our country. Oh yes...there still are too many, but not as many as once thought.

Actually, MITT is a coward because he believes the same thing...his economic policy, his health care policy are nearly identical to The Presidents...MITT is a liberal from a liberal state and he's just to weak to stand up like a man and admit that ALL AMERICAN'S DESERVE EQUAL RIGHTS. That takes courage...which so many of you don't have.

For Johnh77: Actually, IF ROMNEY had said this I'd stand up and applaud him for being honest. You know he supports it but is terrified to lose the Conservative vote. Romney's economic policies, health care policies and virtually all other policies are just about as identical to The President's as anyone can get. If only ROMNEY HAD THE COURAGE TO STAND UP FOR EQUALITY.

It was inevitable for the pronouncement. Who is left to vote for the right wing? The Mormons, the far right and the Tea Parties. That is not going to add up to a majority of voters. Where are you going to get the majority?
