Obama: Same-sex couples should have right to marry

President Barack Obama said in an interview with ABC that "it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married."

With his Wednesday announcement, the president reversed his longstanding position on the issue. It came on the heels of his own vice president and education secretary saying they were in favor of gay marriage.

According to an ABC blog post, Obama further described his thought process as an "evolution" that progressed as he discussed the issue with staff members, gay and lesbian service members and his own family.

He said he thinks Americans are growing increasingly comfortable with the concept of gay marriage and cited his own daughters' views on the matter.

“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents.

"And Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them, and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

Sean Hannity said that while he appreciates the support for his upcoming marriage between himself and Glenn Beck, he still is fervently against this.

Obonzo just lost the election! The majority of this country does not support gay marriage. Even California is against it. This is just one more thing that Obonzo will try to "ram down the throats" of the majority if reelected. The majority of Blacks, Hispanics and Muslims are against it.

  8. Question

I have a question. One would assume that a majority of marriages are performed with some sort of religious figure conducting the ceremony. Assuming gay marriage becomes legal across the 50 states, are churches/synagogues/etc legally required to perform ceremonies for gay couples? And if a pastor or church does not wish to perform a marriage, will law suits be inevitable?

The government cannot force a church or anything to perform any marriage. There are still secular options like the justice of the peace. Same options atheists use.

Hey, its a free country! If gays want to marry, then so be it! Its their right! All that rightwing crap about marriage being traditionally being defined as that between a man and a woman is old stuff! And don't tell me gay marriages are immoral! let's face it, thyere's nothing moral or ethical or right or decent about a teappublican!

It takes an intelligent human being to be able to acknowledge the validity of a new point of view and embrace it. I applaud President Obama for his open-mindedness and willingness to change.

Coming from North Carolina, this is some heartening news to read of on the heels of our new amendment 🙂

Marriage is a private contract between consenting adults. The Federal, or any state government has no business regulating it. Period.

Nice Job CNN,. (and others) that just during an election, we now have only about 2% of the country's population taking up 80% of the talk time,.. no mention of our TENS OF TRILLIONS of dollars of debt that "should" be what we need to be discussing so that the dumbed down population in this country may actually have a significant reason to get out and vote this year,.. now this nonsense is taking up all our talk time. Amazing how stupid the masses are, scary,. as 2 percent of the population will matter when 98% of us are out of jobs and our homes if this country doesnt stop spending money it doesnt have. We will deserve to fail more than any group of people in history.

Actually, latest estimates is that close to 25% of the population are either gay, lesbian or transgender. I'm not sure where you got the 2% from but your abyssmal math skills denote your lack of intelligence.
