President Barack Obama said in an interview with ABC that "it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married."
With his Wednesday announcement, the president reversed his longstanding position on the issue. It came on the heels of his own vice president and education secretary saying they were in favor of gay marriage.
According to an ABC blog post, Obama further described his thought process as an "evolution" that progressed as he discussed the issue with staff members, gay and lesbian service members and his own family.
He said he thinks Americans are growing increasingly comfortable with the concept of gay marriage and cited his own daughters' views on the matter.
“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents.
"And Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them, and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

You are never truly free and equal until you begin sending half of all your paychecks to your ex. Ouch. The scary underbelly of marriage...
An indication of primitive thinking is the belief that your religion is right and the other religions are wrong.
Hey Bubba, this also includes the liberal religion of Godlessness. I have yet to meet a liberal who wasn't a closed minded smug hateful little minded hysterical person.
hey gatornuts, you arent exactly full of sweetness and light there yourself skippy.
North Carolina, thank you for demonstrating your true respect and obedience to Almighty God. Please assist other states in accomplishing this fine message of true love for God and His ways.
his ways are nasty and hatefilled.
Most people do not openely support gay marrige because it is against their religion. Our "preacher" told us it was wrong and gay people should not be allowed to marry. I dont agree.
I think everyone has the right to be happy and do whatever they want as long as nobody else is getting hurt. This is good for gay people and society, maybe being in a monogomous relationship will stop the spread of diseases. They will have the previleges that we all enjoy. They will be free to love and live happily ever after. I dont believe that a just God would deny that to any one of his creations.
"The land of the free and home of the brave" has become a meaningless phrase. A nation cannot be free when the majority are allowed to oppress the minority. That is not democracy, it is tyranny. Malcolm X was so right when he claimed "democracy is hypocrisy".
The difference between primates and humans is an ability for abstract thinking, such as the ability to understand that one religion is not better or more correct than another religion.
The fish aren't biting today.
Romney will now get two more votes from two former Democrats turned Indepemndents in 2010.
polygamy is now your vote?
He lost my vote!
Mr. Parley- Mitt Romneys great great grandfather had 12 wives. Mitt is a mormon. I guess his religion did not evolve. President Obama 2012.
"Protect marriage as God intended"
What a ridiculous statement. Marriage, or the equivalent, was around long before the current God was invented.
Sure, if a given religion does not want to sanctify gay marriage, then fine. Private club, members dues, strange rituals ... make up your own rules.
But for these religions to deny marriage to everyone, that's wrong. You only have to look at countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia to see how well religious law works. Does North Carolina really want that kind of system?
He is in a bubble of baby boomer hippy free love folks, who relativistic morality is destroying this Nation.... Oh thats right, most of them wanted to see the nation destroyed since their freshman years at Berkley or Harvard.
Tomorrow will come, just another day like the day before.
I received my first Masters degree at UC Berkeley, and learned, long before that, the proper use of apostrophes, commas, and proper English. Those lessons eluded you, I see.
Democracy is hypocricy.
he is awesome...I love how he changes his ideas as political pressure mounts.
Ah yes, shifting with the political winds... like when Repubs starting being against the Iraq War.
Polygamy is fine as long as it's between consenting adults.
What happened to the 1 man 1 women thing?
Hey man! Huh? Yea I don't know...sure
Supporters of traditional marriage have no choice; they MUST support the candidate whose church used to support polygamy. No, wait...
