President Barack Obama said in an interview with ABC that "it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married."
With his Wednesday announcement, the president reversed his longstanding position on the issue. It came on the heels of his own vice president and education secretary saying they were in favor of gay marriage.
According to an ABC blog post, Obama further described his thought process as an "evolution" that progressed as he discussed the issue with staff members, gay and lesbian service members and his own family.
He said he thinks Americans are growing increasingly comfortable with the concept of gay marriage and cited his own daughters' views on the matter.
“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents.
"And Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them, and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

God gave us the 10 commandments and said nothing about that they are guidelines. Great part is we all die and get to then find out what is true, Good luck!
It's been a few years since Sunday School... can you remind us which Commandment addressed gay marriage?
i dont remember anything about gay marriage in the 10 commandments, i do recall something about doing no work on the sabbath. As these are not guidelines I assume that you do no 'work' on the sabbath right?
False premise: the premise that my religion is the one true religion, and every other religion is wrong. This is a FALSE premise.
Primitive thinking rejects the Creator simply because He has allowed you the know how what has been created works. Denying God in the midst of a world and creation that points only to Him is the height of arrogance at best or selfishly refusing to believe that there is someone greater than ones self at the least.
There is zero evidence of any form of god. It is the height of arrogance for Christians to say otherwise. Absence of evidence IS evidence of absence.
Paul...Actually, I find your statement primitive, arrogant and selfish.
And this has anything to do with this subject at hand? Doesn't seem like it – unless you don't believe in church-state separation.
Paul – Primitive thinking asserts a creator when one cannot be reliably demonstrated. You have to provide evidence of a creator before you can claim to know anything it/he has allowed.
It's about time Mr. President!!
I love my great dane. Who are you to pass judgment on the propriety of my relationship between two consenting mammals? Quit your bigoted discrimination, and recognize my marriage to my dog!
Thus ever with moral relativists.
Oh please! He has flip flopped on the subject over the past 10 yrs. Its the flavor of the day. He's just playing to the left now, for votes in Nov. That's the most transparent ploy to date for him. Really?
Slipery, your argument holds no weight. The day your dog can verbally consent, and sign is name, then you can talk about that. To equate humans rights with animal rights is totally false. Sounds like the weak non argument of a christian zealots
@mickey1313 OK, let's keep it human. Why not bigamy? Polygamy? If consenting adults is the bright line, you have no valid basis to limit it to two. What about a brother and sister, each over 21? Or a Dad and his 21 year old daughter? Disgusting? Not more disgusting than same gender.
Moral relativists flow with the tide, ungrounded by conviction or beliefs. I believe I'll do whatever mass media pop culture tells me to do, says mickey1313. Fifteen years ago, same gender was disgusting. Then after a well-orchestrated propaganda campaign by hollywood leftist producers, a few SITCOMs with funny gay supporting characters, a few MTV episodes, and viola, we've normalized deviance.
Equality for all gays, gay siblings (inc est), poly gamists, bes tials, prost itutes. Legalize dru gs too while you're at it.
The economy sux but Obama has my vote.
Ya...I want to vote for the guy this guy supports....NOT!
Thank the lord my fellow NC brothers saved the sacred right of marriage. I was talking to my girlfriend about it in her apartment in Raleigh the other day she couldn't agree more about the importance of getting right with God as Americans. So great to have so many like minded people in our tarheel state. It's a shame my wife doesn't agree with me. When I'm at the home in Charlotte I feel like her liberal northern education has messed with Kathy's head. At least that's what Cindy says anyways. Marriage is a sacred right given by god. One of my finer comments in CNN demabloggery. I appreciate the responses from both sides sending a unified message of hate towards me. Good thing it's jokes.
If "Marriage is a sacred right granted by God", then no one is saying you can't get married in a church and have both the govt and your God (whatever God you might believe in) acknowledge it. I think what gays and lesbians want is governmental acknowledgement...not sure they care too much whether God acknowledges it at this point, at least within the contexts of this argument.
You have a wife, AND a girlfriend, and gays are immoral?
So you are against gay marriage, but your were talking to your girlfriend and you disagree with your wife. So what you are saying is you are ok with infidelity. Please explain.
Scott jokes man. I'm posting on a blog at 430 on a Wednesday. If you think I have a wife let alone a wife and a mistress you give me entirely too much credit my man. Think of it as comedy and I think our opinions on this issue are closer than you think.
It's not a straight right. It's not a Gay Right, It's a Human Right!
Its not a right.....its a WRONG!
This is not a distraction.
GAY MARRIAGE has been issue every year. It has been on many state ballot boxes. NC just had their referendum on it. So the Joe Biden and Obama weighing on the issue is quite relevant.
This is indeed an important issue. As it will define which party and which candidate actually values HUMAN RIGHTS and EQUALITY versus fairy-tale myths from 2000-3000 years ago.
Will this give Obama more votes or less votes?....He's going to win either way
Marriage should be hard to get, and devorce should only be allowed for abuse and infidelity. That said, any 2 adult humans should have the right to become married.
For all the God-delusional folks out there, please answer this question: WTH is "God" anyways?
Please provide an answer that makes sense. If you can't provide such an answer, that makes you an ATHEIST-in-DENIAL.
Too funny, imagining how many Gingrich, Hermain Cain, and Rudy Giuliani supporters are here railing about the undermining of marriage!
Jesus doesn't say anything on the matter in the new testament. He does however remind us to love your neighbor and to remember that above all else.
He didn't say you get to choose your neighbor.
Look at who Jesus loved, and who he didn't. He wasn't too keen on the rich or the money changers.
Now just who would fall into that category in modern times? Hmmmm......
What I always find so pathetically hypocritical are those who rant that the government shouldn't tell us we have to purchase health insurance, but the same government should be able to dictate our marriage options. Oh yes,and the state can tell us we have to have car insurance. True leadership takes the courage to state the obvious.
OMG, whats next, a hot dog can marry a bridge?!?!?
