Obama: Same-sex couples should have right to marry

President Barack Obama said in an interview with ABC that "it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married."

With his Wednesday announcement, the president reversed his longstanding position on the issue. It came on the heels of his own vice president and education secretary saying they were in favor of gay marriage.

According to an ABC blog post, Obama further described his thought process as an "evolution" that progressed as he discussed the issue with staff members, gay and lesbian service members and his own family.

He said he thinks Americans are growing increasingly comfortable with the concept of gay marriage and cited his own daughters' views on the matter.

“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents.

"And Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them, and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

why would you want people to stay in a bad marriage? what if they both find out it's not that great? maybe marriage itself will become outdated?

Some of you people make me sick.

The sooner we totally rid religion from politics the sooner we will get this country back on track. This is a human right to marry who you want to marry. If two people are in love who are you to say they can't get married? Just because you have your face burried in the bible or some other religious text does not mean we need it shoved down our throats. Continue on with your archaic beliefs. Just remember, this isn't 200 AD and the Earth does revolve around the Sun.

And "Lucky", I think you should quit posting comments while you are ahead. You are sounding like a real bafoon.

I agree 100%!!! TAXS THE CHURCHES! They want to tell "everyone" how to live, TAX THEM!!! They need to take their noses out of non-followers noses. All religions! Are they that insecure about the end that they have to correct everything here? That only shows their distrust in a happy afterlife. Proof! Get out of people lives and stick to what you do best: prayer – or talking to yourself.

  4. Obama Rules

Along with our "right of democracy" comes a right of freedom. And when one group prevents another group from enjoying equal rights, their "right to freedom" is denied. This is called oppression. And at that point, it is no longer a true democracy. It is an autocracy in democracy's clothing.

Why not just eliminate the definition of marriage altogether? Why does it concern the government? Treat people as individuals and the problem goes away entirely. What about the rights of single people? Why should they be treated any different than married couples, gay or straight? Maybe the poster above is right, maybe the idea of marriage is antiquated.

It is very very good to hear that another form of discrimination is being thrown out of our government. Unless we intend to make being
gay illegal we have no right to stop anyone from getting married that are of the age limit. As Americans we need to be willing to look at things from an outside perspective to make sure freedoms are not being taken away and discrimination isn't being allowed by a government that purports to protect and promote freedom.

  11. SF (non-hippie)

For the record, this is not a flip-flop; it's just a flip, which is completely permissible in the political realm. It shows us that our politicians are taking the needs of our dynamic country into consideration and looking out for our best interests instead of their own agendas. If you read Obama's justification for this shift, it proves that he is a logical thinker and doesn't plan to flop any time soon.

    It's almost comical!

Remember the immigration promises he made to get the Hispanic vote in '08?

It is sad that even though President Obama inherited the country in a dilapidated state he is still blamed for all of our problems. The national debt isn't his problem and he is blamed, the economy was messed up by Bush, and he is supporting gay unions and is getting flack for that too. It is obvious that he is criticized and downed cause he is black. As far as it being a political tactic for him to endorse gay marriage; I believe that is wrong. I feel that he is genuinely supportive of it. I am too. Its not who you can marry, it is what marriage stands for. People get over it, times have changed we live in a new era.
