President Barack Obama said in an interview with ABC that "it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married."
With his Wednesday announcement, the president reversed his longstanding position on the issue. It came on the heels of his own vice president and education secretary saying they were in favor of gay marriage.
According to an ABC blog post, Obama further described his thought process as an "evolution" that progressed as he discussed the issue with staff members, gay and lesbian service members and his own family.
He said he thinks Americans are growing increasingly comfortable with the concept of gay marriage and cited his own daughters' views on the matter.
“It’s interesting, some of this is also generational,” he said. “You know, Malia and Sasha, they have friends whose parents are same-sex couples. There have been times where Michelle and I have been sitting around the dinner table and we’re talking about their friends and their parents.
"And Malia and Sasha, it wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently. It doesn’t make sense to them, and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective.”

Okay, now this is the definition of being a, kiss a**. Yes they're humans but if you allow such perversions, what, next we will hear its okay to marry a 15 year old just coz she's been misled to think she's in love. And the guy is leading a nation, i wonder in what direction.
So does this mean you are ok with people marrying their 1st cousin because that's been legal for years in the following states: AK, AL, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, HI, MD, MA, NJ, NM, NY, NC, RI, SC, TN,, VT, VA
and Washington DC. So what's really more perverted out of the two?
Quite frankly this isn't news.
He's going to lose the election now???? Seriously? Many of you are as stupid as you are bigoted. Polls show up to 60% of Americans are in favor of equality. I think it's pretty evenly divided (for now). But....rednecks and right wingers weren't going to vote for Obama anyway....I don't really see where he's lost anything...oh and I'm pretty sure he has the inside track on where things are trending and what to avoid as far as political suicide goes. If you don't support equality, you're a bigot. Don't hide behind your religion. Call it what it is...BIGOTRY!
Call it BIGOTRY if you want I don't care and I'm not going to hide behind "my religion". This is a moral issue. Not made up by man but by the very One who created us. If you imagine yourself creating wee little beings that walked, talked, and just lived like we do and you had a plan for them of how to do it. Then imagine them saying, "We never were made we 'just evolved' and it don't matter what we do. We all have a 'right' to do what we want"
What would you do? You would squash the life out of them pretty fast wouldn't you? Do they have the right to say you didn't work hard to make them?
When humankind screws up the perfect plan God has intended for men there is nothing to reap but chaos. And finally God's wrath poured out. If you don't believe me now, some day you will remembere every word I said in this comment.
God has the "RIGHT" to squash us when we are living in rebellion to His plan/pattern/design/will. But He in His mercy is prolonging that day of judgement so that people like you can find salvation before it is eternally to late. Think about it my friend!
WEll I disagree with you. I do not believe more people agree we should have same sex marriage. I believe Mothers will conme out of the Woodwork and ban same sex marriages for the protection of their children, especially boys.
Good gosh, 'BIGOTRY' has simply coem to mean a dissenting opinion. I am a bigot. Get over it. Now, if what you read is true and so many people are in favor of this societal change- that is what it is no matter how you wish to portray it, and if all the polls are correct, then why is it that in states where the courts have not taken control and people have voted, it loses every time- even in Masschusetts and California- perhaps Vermont as well. Why is it it NEVER wins when people vote on it? Simple question and the facts are there- read all the poles you wish. Should this change be made- I have no problem with the state getting out of the marriage business and enforcing civil contracts for all. Arguing over a word is silly. Allow religion keep that word and the government should only enforce, and require, a civil union whcih is simply a contract. And please, stop practicing good ol fashioned bigotry while condemning it.
"in favor of equality" is not the same thing as redefining marriage.
Another black man on the down low. Watch out Ms. Obama.
Remember the cliche, if you don't have anything nice to say then say nothing at all. You didn't have anything to say, therefore, you shouldn't have said anything at all. Not trying to be mean, just telling the truth. Have a great day.
Obama was the one who said marriage was a "Sacred Union" by God...
And it IS -–> for ALL his creatures!!!
Marriage is a sacred union by GOD not by the President. Remember something everyone, President Obama, is the CEO of the USA, he is not GOD who is the President of the world, and who has all the power to judge everyone. President Obamas job is to govern not judge. People, take along look around and ask yourself real life questions before you pass judgement because it can backfire on you.
He lied when he said it then. This man is nothing but lies.
whatever, like his values changed overnite.dont be stupid and give him your vote for this, like hes not gonna change his mind back after the election.timming ppl think about it.why now all of the sudden?
Great! Welcome to the 21st Century, Mr. President. Now will the rest please get on board?
i like that congratulacion boys
There will be several who will vote against him over this one issue alone. The question is will he gain more than he will lose.
This was unfortunately the one step that cost him my vote. It was pushing me to vote for him to start with but this truly ended it. And don't believe the garbage about a majority of people supporting this movement. Heck, I'd rather see a man marry 2 women or a woman marry 2 men. At least it would be closer to natural.
Hey, consnting adults should be able to do as they wish. What goes on in the bedroom is their business. And, more than that, when what goes bad in the bedroom ends up in public court it makes for great reading AND commet fodder in places like this because, as we really truly know, nothing ever really stays in the bedroom otherwise we would not have STDs, HIV...and daytime tv. 🙂
Wow... are you for slavery too? People should be denied rights because of how they were born? Oh, let me guess... you think it's a 'choice', HAHAHA!!!
And Mitt Romney endorsed gay couples adopting and raising children. If you are against gay marriage, how can you possibly be for gays adopting children?
I concur, Raoul. He really did contradict himself. What a mess.
"Should have..." funny little quibble of evolutionary life that has placed us humans in the wonderful position of being able to destroy all of human life. Where would we be without the word 'should'...much more enrgetic than 'why'. 'Why' can be asked while sitting on the couch without movement. 'Should' means something did not happen and now things must change. Anyway, I'm kind of tired of the word 'marriage'. It is becoming meanignless like 'fairness', 'hate', 'bigot' and 'racist'. Those symbols are so overused ...actually, they are used to mean something did not go the way someone wanted it to and so feet are stomped, tears role down the cheeks and names are hurled because names have special powers. And this will be done by people calling oppositional opinion holders childish or stupid or ignorant. Imagine being told that by someone acting childish- happens all the time. 'Should' is one of those words that requires nothing but winds points. Every child knows this but does it resolve anything? So, as a society we are about definging marriage- at what level- religious or civil. How about we give it another word outside of religion- let's not allow our government to push a religious burden of marriage upon us. How about we have a civil contract and let's discuss that. Let's discuss the fairness and equality of a contract between two people no matter what gender they be. Let's take the age old traditions I enjoy celebrating and put them aside and get down to the nuts and bolts of two people pledging a contractual union.
Can we do that and stop with the politically neutered speech meant only to gain money and power for a few while the rest of us remain stagnated in argument? Can we do that or do we keep twisting in this evolutionary web that creates the situatuiion where we will think we need to protect ourselves from each other and use that in order to destruct all we have spent our eternity thus far building?
This doesn't have anything to do with morals. How can the part of a person's nature that affects his or her mating habbits be moral less or unethical?
You also said something about "god's plan". How is that relevant at all? God does not exist. You think differently? Prove it to me! Otherwise your argument completely falls apart and is entirely irrelevant.
Sure, it is your religion that tells you that but really, who cares? Religion is something personal, you have no right to judge someone because of your believes.
Also, why do you care about this issue so much? If your almighty imaginary friend really does exist (which it does not) just let it be it's job to judge and smite those who commited a sin after they died!
Didn't your Jesus fella teach you to love everyone all the time and to leave the judging to him? If you judge gay people right now and keep harassing them right now YOU are the one who is committing a sin and YOU are the one who deseres to go to hell! This level of hypocisy is simply breathtaking...
If you don't believe in Gay Marriage... don't get Gay Married. I can't believe people can still be so bigoted. It's god's plan, blah blah blah Bible blah blah blah. Here's a fun fact: In the Bible, God killed over 2 Million people. This includes the 42 children that called Elisha pointed out that Elisha was bald, 14,700 Isrealites that complained about him, and just about all of humanity in Noah's flood. Satan killed, what... 10 at most? And this God is the all knowing and loving one you choose to follow? Bible says women basically should be servants to their men... and all this is ignored because these are different times, yet people still look to the Bible when it comes to gay marriage. This book is fantasy. If more people start believing in humanity and less time trying to make others conform to an agenda that was written, based on some lady who cheated on her husband 2000 years ago... maybe this would be a much more peaceful place already.
@Joe Carrao.....I must agree 100%. And I do truly believe it's political. If the POTUS say's he believes the Earth is flat, then many people will agree with him simply because of who he is.
