Baseball final forfeited because of girl at second base

The Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship baseball game wasn't played Thursday night because Mesa Prep's second baseman is a girl.

Paige Sultzbach, a freshman, is playing baseball because her high school doesn't offer girls softball. But the school Mesa Prep was to face in the final, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, said its boys would not compete against a team with a girl and forfeited the game - and the state title - to Mesa Prep.

"As a Catholic school, we promote the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education,” Our Lady of Sorrows said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate KTVK.

“It takes tremendous moral courage to stand by what it is you believe, and they are doing what they think is right,” Mesa Prep Headmaster Robert Wagner told KTVK.

But Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the Mesa Prep team were being done a disservice.

"This is not a contact sport. It shouldn't be an issue. It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field," Pamela Sultzbach told the Arizona Republic.

"I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century," Amy Arnold, Mesa Prep's athletic director, told the Republic.

Mesa Prep and Our Lady of Sorrows played twice during the regular season, but Sultzbach sat out, as they were away games for her team.

“It was on their field, and I felt the need to respect their rules,” she told KTVK.

The final would have been on a neutral field, and Sultzbach wanted to play.

Now, despite being hailed as state champions, Mesa Prep will feel like they've missed something, Pamela Sultzbach said.

"This team has worked so hard," she said. "They're undefeated. They had one game left. At our school, we're taught that when you start something, you complete it, and they weren't done."

that's ridiculous to not play a game of baseball because a female plays on the other team. What a bunch of losers. I used to play co-ed softball in my city and i had 3 women on my team that were phenomenal athletes. We had them playing short stop, first base and center field.. they rarely made an error.. and they could hit with the best of the guys..

This is the exact same thing that happened in St MAry's kansas when the "Pius X" freakshow school there wouldn't play a basketball game with a female ref. They lost their Kansas acredidation over it. Disgusting, pathetic useless rules mad by men to control everything..."Pius X" ya they got the "Pius" part right...sickening. If everyone "stuck to their beliefs" we'd have people smoking d o pe in the streets...they are sick.

Before slinging arrows at different religions, step back and look at whether the actions of Our Lady of Sorrows are based on local beliefs or the greater Church as a whole. I've worked at a Catholic school for 20 years, even though I'm not personally Catholic. It wouldn't even occur to us to walk off the field because of a player of the "other" gender was playing simply because the equivalent sport wasn't offered for their own gender. All faiths have congregations holding a wide range of views. We should respect that, even if we think they're wrong. I agree that it's a non-contact sport, generally, so let them play! It might be a completely different discussion if the sport in question was wrestling.

I don't respect it. Not one bit. I don't respect anyone who respects it. It's nothing but discrimination and closed minded bigotry.

Read your Bible it's clearly stated in Doubleday 12:23...Thou shalt not play ball against a girl even in the state final.

@Grouchy – it's not just "lliberals". The majority of Americans do not agree with these alleged "values", which promote discrimination, and subjugation of women. Poll the typical Christian and you'll likely find they don't have a problem with a girl on a baseball team.

They didn't forfeit the game because they were playing a girl, they forfeit the game because they are afraid to get beat by a girl. What a bunch of wimps, and it only teaches those kids to quit when they think something is unfair. Our Lady of Sorrows is raising a bunch of "ladies".

Bully for them. The "Christian" Taliban lives in America. I hope they enjoy stewing in their own juices. Come out of the 15th Century and into the 21st! What kind of message does this send do the children these people are purporting to educate?

"What kind of message does this send to the children these people are purporting to educate?"

      1. Be afraid of girls?
      2. If we lose, they'll say a girl beat us. Safer to run away?
      3. Don't stand up to a woman; you will lose.
      4. Women are better third basemen than men?
      5. Our baseball coach is a weenie?

It has been reported recently that the Catholic church wants it's members to push the Conservative agenda. How sad we have to go back to the dark ages based on the church.
