Baseball final forfeited because of girl at second base
The Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship baseball game wasn't played Thursday night because Mesa Prep's second baseman is a girl.
Paige Sultzbach, a freshman, is playing baseball because her high school doesn't offer girls softball. But the school Mesa Prep was to face in the final, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, said its boys would not compete against a team with a girl and forfeited the game - and the state title - to Mesa Prep.
"As a Catholic school, we promote the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education,” Our Lady of Sorrows said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate KTVK.
“It takes tremendous moral courage to stand by what it is you believe, and they are doing what they think is right,” Mesa Prep Headmaster Robert Wagner told KTVK.
But Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the Mesa Prep team were being done a disservice.
"This is not a contact sport. It shouldn't be an issue. It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field," Pamela Sultzbach told the Arizona Republic.
"I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century," Amy Arnold, Mesa Prep's athletic director, told the Republic.
Mesa Prep and Our Lady of Sorrows played twice during the regular season, but Sultzbach sat out, as they were away games for her team.
“It was on their field, and I felt the need to respect their rules,” she told KTVK.
The final would have been on a neutral field, and Sultzbach wanted to play.
Now, despite being hailed as state champions, Mesa Prep will feel like they've missed something, Pamela Sultzbach said.
"This team has worked so hard," she said. "They're undefeated. They had one game left. At our school, we're taught that when you start something, you complete it, and they weren't done."

Its a male ego weakness... they had a fear of losing and havin to hear, "You were beaten by a girl" I hope those young men grow up to show their wives and female children more respect than that. Apparently, the leaders of that school are so wrapped up in their own egos that they would deny those players the right to finish what they started.
I doubt it was the "young men" who made the decision, but the administration at the school.
My son has played soccer against girls on multiple occasions, and there was no issue. He was proud to score a goal against an older girls team that did beat his team.
IMHO, the school should be banned from the playoffs if their ludicrous rules affect their decision to play. I hope at least the team that they beat to get there got a chance to play Mesa instead, because ALL of the Catholic school's games should be canceled as invalid.

Someone needs to ask the Catholic school what today's date is. I think the answer would be off about a hundred years!
Luckily, by missing the game, the catholic school will have more time to teach the boys that evolution is an evil lie and that the sun revolves around the Earth.
Ok so next year, the league should remove the Lady of Sorrow from it's ranks and not allow it to play any of their teams. Come on....lets grow up. We are in a world where women have the same rights as men, blacks the same as white. I thought that we already covered this. So to be fair...if a team wants to forefeit their game because the other team has a girl....then I say they forefeit the right to play in the league. They can just play against other religions that do the same thing. What a way to bring your kids up.
I've been hunting through the Bible all morning trying to find the place where it says girl's aren't supposed to play baseball. No luck. Help me out here.

Doesn't say 'no girls in baseball' anywhere in the Bible. It's another one of those silly anti-female rules that are bound to crop up when the rulemakers are a bunch of men living in little rooms without talking for 20 years.

Poorly written story, Mr. Lendon. The championship game wasn't played because there was a girl on the team. The championship game wasn't played because the backwards Catholic school leadership wouldn't let them, denying all these kids of the right to compete.

So they played twice where she sat out because they were at their homefield and she respected their rules. Her team is undefeated which means they won those two games. So they forfeited to a team who had already beaten them twice without the help of their starting second baseman/girl. Way to go, It's not you have an issue with a girl playing, you knew you were going to lose to a girl. You'd already loss to them twice and now you had to play with a girl on the roster. You knew you were going to get beat and took the "morale highground" not the "cowardly retreat from reality".

The other team could have just walked her when she came to bat.
Can see it now: private schools everywhere putting at least one girl on their team as a way of playing chicken with the other schools. Forfeit your way to the finals! Who will blink first?
It wouldn't get you to the finals, but it will get you a free win. if they are going to forfeit to teams with girls, in a league that allows girls, they can't be competetive. They should opt to participate in a league where they can compete.
This just shows you how Catholics view women and it's not as equals.
