The Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship baseball game wasn't played Thursday night because Mesa Prep's second baseman is a girl.
Paige Sultzbach, a freshman, is playing baseball because her high school doesn't offer girls softball. But the school Mesa Prep was to face in the final, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, said its boys would not compete against a team with a girl and forfeited the game - and the state title - to Mesa Prep.
"As a Catholic school, we promote the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education,” Our Lady of Sorrows said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate KTVK.
“It takes tremendous moral courage to stand by what it is you believe, and they are doing what they think is right,” Mesa Prep Headmaster Robert Wagner told KTVK.
But Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the Mesa Prep team were being done a disservice.
"This is not a contact sport. It shouldn't be an issue. It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field," Pamela Sultzbach told the Arizona Republic.
"I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century," Amy Arnold, Mesa Prep's athletic director, told the Republic.
Mesa Prep and Our Lady of Sorrows played twice during the regular season, but Sultzbach sat out, as they were away games for her team.
“It was on their field, and I felt the need to respect their rules,” she told KTVK.
The final would have been on a neutral field, and Sultzbach wanted to play.
Now, despite being hailed as state champions, Mesa Prep will feel like they've missed something, Pamela Sultzbach said.
"This team has worked so hard," she said. "They're undefeated. They had one game left. At our school, we're taught that when you start something, you complete it, and they weren't done."
Hahahahah, they were worried they would be beat by a girl, what losers! All of you who think that girls don't belong in baseball, you are idiots, but I guess perhaps only the parts where they chew, take steroids, and act like chauvanists.
of course they don't want to play with girls.... Catholics have made it very clear they prefer to play with young boys
actually, they do play with girls too. The priests are quite versatile when it comes to molesting children
Thank you I needed a good laugh this morning!
Well said! A great smile to start the day.
Where was all the outrage and morals while priests were molesting kids?
@Jon King – exactly!
Were you asleep for that decade? There was PLENTY of outrage about pedophile priests. Still is. Doesn't mean the Catholic Church can't do something else outrageous, too!
Incredulous, there was outrage, but all the outrage against priests came from outside the church. THe priests themselves have no problem with hurting children
Why does the "Our LADY of Sorrows" school allow boys?
"...we promote the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education...”
I think the Taliban says something very similar to this.. When we these people bring their communities into the modern day?
...and how is this different from refusing to play against a team that has black players?
Shame on these pathetic loser bigots.
Of course, they couldn't handle losing a game with a girl playing against them.
Is the pope cool with this? I can't find scriptural support for bigotry and stupidity. Time for the boys to rethink their beliefs even if the "adults" object to thinking.
You're clearly not looking very hard.
My son's private school and its league allows coed soccer and lacrosse players, and many times the girls are better than the boys. I have also never once seen a boy have a problem with this. In this case, I would not be surprised to find out that the "problem" was with parents or coaches, and now they have the satisfaction of knowing that their children are well on their way to becoming misogynists, just like themselves. Congratulations.
So will the boys be allowed to play girls softball or basketball if the school does not have a boys team? It goes both ways.
Reverse the roles. If it was a guy wanting to play on a girls team there is no way it would be allowed to happen. Allowing girls to play in boys sports is completely rediculous. I will change my mind on this when they start allowing guys to participate in girls softball, basketball, volleyball etc etc.
This is not Cathloic school, this group left the church years ago!!!
I was raised Catholic and I played in a baseball league that included girls in KY way back in the '70's! Could these people be any more out of touch? I'm a conservative and I think this is ridiculous!
So glad I'm no longer a member of the Catholic church.
Jesus, protect me from your followers.
