Baseball final forfeited because of girl at second base

The Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship baseball game wasn't played Thursday night because Mesa Prep's second baseman is a girl.

Paige Sultzbach, a freshman, is playing baseball because her high school doesn't offer girls softball. But the school Mesa Prep was to face in the final, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, said its boys would not compete against a team with a girl and forfeited the game - and the state title - to Mesa Prep.

"As a Catholic school, we promote the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education,” Our Lady of Sorrows said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate KTVK.

“It takes tremendous moral courage to stand by what it is you believe, and they are doing what they think is right,” Mesa Prep Headmaster Robert Wagner told KTVK.

But Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the Mesa Prep team were being done a disservice.

"This is not a contact sport. It shouldn't be an issue. It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field," Pamela Sultzbach told the Arizona Republic.

"I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century," Amy Arnold, Mesa Prep's athletic director, told the Republic.

Mesa Prep and Our Lady of Sorrows played twice during the regular season, but Sultzbach sat out, as they were away games for her team.

“It was on their field, and I felt the need to respect their rules,” she told KTVK.

The final would have been on a neutral field, and Sultzbach wanted to play.

Now, despite being hailed as state champions, Mesa Prep will feel like they've missed something, Pamela Sultzbach said.

"This team has worked so hard," she said. "They're undefeated. They had one game left. At our school, we're taught that when you start something, you complete it, and they weren't done."

The catholic school deserved to lose. Baseball is America's sport, not American males' sport. Tough cookies if the catholics don't know how to play baseball.

Bottom line - this girl would have been playing softball if her school had had such a team, but they didn't. Not her fault. Besides, it's not like she bullied her way onto the boys' baseball team and demanded to play. Lacking a girl's softball team, she "made" the boy's baseball team and secured a spot as their second baseman; the team went undefeated; this should say something for the team and this girl's athletic ability; she obviously earned her spot on the boys' baseball team and deserves to be there. Our Lady of Sorrows needs to get with the program.

Ik10034 is absolutely correct. She was selected for second base becasue her coach thought she was the best player for second base. he was correct as demonstated by their undefeated season and having eanred the right to compete in the final game for the state championship. What a charade of discrimination the other team's coaches and the school administration has demosntated. True 18'th century thinking.

Our Lady of Sorrows – boys are not going to understand women very well when they grow up. Adolescent years are precisely when boys and girls need to be learning about each other!!! Not being kept separate from each other. This just instills a sense of permanent separation in all common activities together! DUH! There are going to be a lot 'sorrowful ladies' if they marry boys with this indoctrination!

LOL good ol' America – I'm surprised they didn't make her wear an apron and banished to the kitchen for the rest of the year.

Duke, what does this have to do with a problem with "good ol' America?" "America" let her play 2nd base. What's wrong with letting a person do something that doesn't harm others? I don't understand your complaint?

God, as described in the Bible, doesn't tell them to be bigots. In fact Christians are instructed to love their neighors (Mark 12:31) and love your enemies (Matthew 5:43-48). Clearly the other team is your opponent, not your enemy. The point there is that if the command is to love your enemy, then clearly you should love anyone who you like more than your enemy.

However, feel free to dispute but if you do, cite your references as I did.

What?! "Anything you can do, I can do better"... I figure they were more afraid of losing to a girl. Society today need to figure out what the heck they want. It needs to be an all or nothing. Either we go back 100 years where woman and men are completely segregated from each other or we move forward and allow women and men to all do the same.
If you are a man and you want to be prom queen, go for it... if you are a man and you want to run for Miss America... go for it... but remember people, this is not black and white... figure out what you want and stick with it. Either woman and men are equal or they are not...

Hmmm... what an amazingly right-wing Muslim belief. While I find the Catholic school’s belief to be a bit archaic, I’ll respect their withdrawing from the game in order to stand up for their belief. The key here is they did not (from what we know here) attempt to force the other school to take its player off the field. In other words, they did not force their belief upon others. That’s fine and to be respected.

The other school is also to be respected for their consideration of keeping the girl on the bench when playing at the Catholic school. They didn’t have to do that. It’s not in the rules of the game. So they did it out of charitable consideration of others.

Everyone should be careful about how far they try to generalize this. We have three Catholic high schools near us. One is boys-only, one is girls-only, and one is mixed. So this is NOT a “Catholic wide” belief.

First sentence: "...baseball game wasn't played ... because Mesa Prep's second baseman is a girl."

No. The game wasn't played because of the opposing team's bigotry. How dare the author of this piece pin the blame on the person that we should be praising for handling the situation so well. She showed tolerance when she respected the opposing team's "rules" when her team went to play on their field.

    Is this right ?

    Someone posted...

Our Lady of Sorrows is NOT a Catholic school !! !
    :
They are operated by a group which split from the Roman Catholic Church over the latter's doctrines acknowledging freedom of conscience, the salvation of non-Catholics, etc.

They are not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix at all.

Here in Florida we have Catholic Adult Co-Ed softball so I really wondered about this.

If this school is not under the guidelines of The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix then how are they a Catholic school ?

I sorely hope that the USMC in your name is for show and you are not a product of that proud group of Americans. Jose, women are people too. They can do just about everything a man can and in many things they are much better than men. Get a grip.
