Baseball final forfeited because of girl at second base

The Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship baseball game wasn't played Thursday night because Mesa Prep's second baseman is a girl.

Paige Sultzbach, a freshman, is playing baseball because her high school doesn't offer girls softball. But the school Mesa Prep was to face in the final, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, said its boys would not compete against a team with a girl and forfeited the game - and the state title - to Mesa Prep.

"As a Catholic school, we promote the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education,” Our Lady of Sorrows said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate KTVK.

“It takes tremendous moral courage to stand by what it is you believe, and they are doing what they think is right,” Mesa Prep Headmaster Robert Wagner told KTVK.

But Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the Mesa Prep team were being done a disservice.

"This is not a contact sport. It shouldn't be an issue. It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field," Pamela Sultzbach told the Arizona Republic.

"I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century," Amy Arnold, Mesa Prep's athletic director, told the Republic.

Mesa Prep and Our Lady of Sorrows played twice during the regular season, but Sultzbach sat out, as they were away games for her team.

“It was on their field, and I felt the need to respect their rules,” she told KTVK.

The final would have been on a neutral field, and Sultzbach wanted to play.

Now, despite being hailed as state champions, Mesa Prep will feel like they've missed something, Pamela Sultzbach said.

"This team has worked so hard," she said. "They're undefeated. They had one game left. At our school, we're taught that when you start something, you complete it, and they weren't done."

  2. Fair?

Why are girls allowed to be a participant on a boys team but boys are not allowed to be participants on a girls team? Is it really fair to require boys teams to play teams that have girls on them but flat out deny boys from even being a member of a girls team such as in volleyball or even softball??? Does that seem fair? Does it make sense?

Because, genious, chances are if there's a girl's volleyball team, then there's a boy's team for the boy to be on. Same with softball/baseball. In this case there was no girl's team for this girl to be on, the only option for baseball/softball was the boy's team.

And for no other reason than this person having girl parts, the other team of cowards took their ball and went home.

Actually there have been high schools where there were boys allowed to play on the girls field hockey teams because there was no boys field hockey.

You're making the assumption that boys who want to play a sport are being prohibited from girls' teams in situations where there is no comparable boys' team. Is that actually the case? Bring in some evidence, hon.

Did you read the article? It said the school had not girls softball team, so she was accepted on to the baseball team. There is no mention off boys being denied anything at any time, you just came up with some controversy that never actually happened.

"Fair" asked, "Why are girls allowed to be a participant on a boys team but boys are not allowed to be participants on a girls team?"

The answer is, they ARE allowed, if there is no boys' team in that sport. This is how a number of boys play field hockey, and swim with girls' swim teams.

Now can someone explain to me what actual, honest-to-goodness Catholic teaching this so-called Catholic school pretends to be upholding?

Our Lady of Sorrows better find a new all-male league to play in or dismantle their team because they just showed every other team in their league how to beat them every time. All you need is one girl on the team & they will forfeit. If other teams are not as respectful of their beliefs as Miss Sultzbach, they might even lose their home games to forfeit. It really is a shame for the Our Lady of Sorrows players, who are obviously talented or they would not have reached the championship.

they know they'll lose to the better, undefeated team. they can't have their boys losing to a girl. they're too afraid of that.

The dam is long ago breached; the secular humanists have won the battle. But I applaud Sorrows for at least attempting to hold the line. Yin and Yang in everything; PC will give way to a strong reaction some day.

Good for this girl! She starts at 4 and goes undefeated.
Maybe the boys are jealous or worried she would get more hits!
BTW, I'm a dad with 2 girls. I would be stoked to have my daugther do this.
    You go girl.'
Congrats on the State Championship. You would have won if the game was played. The other team did not have enough character to be a champion!

Again............they were not afraid of losing to a girl! I think they were afraid of losing to the team because the team had beat them TWICE.....WITH THE GIRL AGREEING TO SIT OUT!

By the way there were lots of people saying they'd put their girl on an all boys team but not too many guys saying they'd put their son on an all girls team. Some of you are so politically correct you don't even have the courage to stand up for something you think is wrong.......wrong is too strong a word because there's nothing wrong with her playing but D_AMN! Whats the big deal?....you mean there was NO softball team ANYWHERE NEAR this young lady?! She was FORCED to join an all male team? Why weren't there more girls on the team then? I think it was a political statement by a mom in the end

what are you on about with 'anything near' and 'forced' ? it was a school team and so she join the school team, what issue do you have with that?

    • Fernando

@Cedar Rapids she had a choice. And the choice was made to join an all boys team. I say all boys because once again NO other girls are on this team...is that a coincidence? the team is actually awesome so NO other girls wanted to join? or those girls found other teams to play for not in the school?

If the same thing happen ina school where the boys program was ended due to (insert reason here) I guarantee if those boys went and tried to join the girls team they would be flatly denied. Do you disagree?

sorry Fernando but you seem to assuming a lot here. You are asusming that more girls wanted to play baseball because there was no softball, and that they were good enough to make the team like this girl did?
are you suggesting that her appointment to the team was a 'political' one?

she wanted to play on the school team and so join it, simple as that, really.

Boys are allowed to play on Girl's teams (field hockey for example) if there is no boy's team in the sport. Doesn't happen often, but it does happen. But if you really think girls should be at home learning how to bake from Mom, why don't you just come out and say it?

      May 11, 2012 at 11:08 am | Report abuse |

@Dave S Don't be ignorant.....I have a daughter and a son and the last thing I want is for her to be barefoot and pregnant. BUT my daughter is not going to play football with boys, hockey with boys, basketball on a boys team nor baseball on a boys team. If you don't mind it and think it makes her a better woman than thats your belief.

I wouldn't encourage my son to play on a all girls team but I assume you would encourage it right? From your logic if there is no males team and your son really wants to play he can join the girls softball team right?

my daughter and my son can play any sport they like, regardless of their team mates gender. Heck if they kick butt enough to be able to make the team then more strength to them.
