Baseball final forfeited because of girl at second base

The Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship baseball game wasn't played Thursday night because Mesa Prep's second baseman is a girl.

Paige Sultzbach, a freshman, is playing baseball because her high school doesn't offer girls softball. But the school Mesa Prep was to face in the final, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, said its boys would not compete against a team with a girl and forfeited the game - and the state title - to Mesa Prep.

"As a Catholic school, we promote the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education,” Our Lady of Sorrows said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate KTVK.

“It takes tremendous moral courage to stand by what it is you believe, and they are doing what they think is right,” Mesa Prep Headmaster Robert Wagner told KTVK.

But Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the Mesa Prep team were being done a disservice.

"This is not a contact sport. It shouldn't be an issue. It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field," Pamela Sultzbach told the Arizona Republic.

"I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century," Amy Arnold, Mesa Prep's athletic director, told the Republic.

Mesa Prep and Our Lady of Sorrows played twice during the regular season, but Sultzbach sat out, as they were away games for her team.

“It was on their field, and I felt the need to respect their rules,” she told KTVK.

The final would have been on a neutral field, and Sultzbach wanted to play.

Now, despite being hailed as state champions, Mesa Prep will feel like they've missed something, Pamela Sultzbach said.

"This team has worked so hard," she said. "They're undefeated. They had one game left. At our school, we're taught that when you start something, you complete it, and they weren't done."

Our Lady of Sorrows is NOT a Catholic school: they are operated by a group which split from the Roman Catholic Church over the latter's doctrines acknowledging freedom of conscience, the salvation of non-Catholics, etc. They are not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix at all.

So, Catholics sucked up to Teabaggers, found out how radical they are, sold them the Lady of Sorrows to get away from them. Now the bags are going bonkers because there is a bag standing on a bag and the bags of course hate women. The petry dish of course is Arizona. Haha, don't ya just love it.

Ellen is correct. CNN has failed to mention that Our Lady of Sorrows is a Society of St. Pius X school within the article. The Society of St. Pius X is a Catholic separatist group and not recognized as a Catholic organization by the Vatican.

She may be a girl, but the real wimps are the boys who chose not to play against her. Hey, getting beat by a girl isn't all that bad. Wait 'til you get married and you will see. You get beat at something nearly every day. And, you learn to like it.

It was not the team's decision. it was the school administration's decision. I am sure the team wanted to play the game.

This is so funny. Good for Mesa Prep and a well deserved victory considering Our Lady of Sorrows Academy would have been shunned for losing miserably to a girl anyways. Good to see Catholic schools still raising kids to be closed minded pansies. Winning...

This is not a Catholic Church thing, this is the opinion of THAT school. There are PLENTY of co-ed Catholic high schools in the US. It is NOT the opinion of the Catholic Church that boys and girls should be educated separately, it is the opinion of that school's administration.

If it’s based on their religious beliefs then YES it is a Catholic thing. Consensus with other school is not required as you yourself said it’s the opinion of THAT school. Then so would it be the opposite in that it opinion of the other school would differ. Think it through next time.

Wrong. The Catholic church hates women. If they did not they would treat them as equals. Where are the women priests?

Well good for them. I wish more religious fools would follow their own pretend spew. Oh you don't believe in evolution eh? Well, because most of our modern medial drugs are based on our understanding of evolutionary genetics in bacteria and viruses, then just stay home and pray it away.

That would thin the stupid out of America really fast. I promise I won't laugh at your funerals.

Can anyone fault them for holding fast to their beliefs? The problem we have in this country is that people compromise their beliefs be it for public opinion or what ever. And that's worse than flip-flopping.

I understand where you are coming from. But the issue isn’t that they held fast to their beliefs. It’s that their beliefs are primitive, chauvinistic and they forced them on this other team.

Their beliefs are not admirable. There's no reason to respect or admire people's adherence to bigoted and primitive beliefs. It is, however, admirable to oppose such beliefs.

Coackroaches haven't evolved much and they're still doing fine, thank you very much. It's interesting to know that some bacteria, when exposed to extremely unfavorable conditions, will form an endospore, essentially a thick protective layer isolating and protecting them from the outside world. In this form, they can survive for very long and will pretty much pick up where they left off when the conditions become favorable again to their development. Ideas evolve, Beliefs might go dormant for a little while but they come back completely unchanged.

I went to Catholic High school and graduated in 1965 I was a four letter person and lettered in basketball, football, track, and captained the golf team. If we had a girl that could play golf, I could have used her on the team; and if there are any fast girls, we needed two on the 440 relay team.

This Lady of Sorrows is a sorrowful tale, and this separation is something left over from the Byzantine era - The local cardinal should have stepped in and told the boys to lose their high handedness - BAD MOVE

      Disgusted Catholic,

CNN has thrown the Roman Catholic church under the bus with poor reporting.

FACT is Our Lady of Sorrows Academy is a Society of St. Pius X (AKA Lefebvrians) school not a Roman Catholic School. The Society of St. Pius X is a Catholic separatist group who’s congregation believes that they are Catholic however they are not currently recognized as a Catholic organization by Rome. There are ongoing talks between Lefebvrians and the Vatican about reconciliation but those talks have caused a riff among the leadership within the Society of St. Pius X.

The fact that CNN would fail to mention the Society of St Pius X within the article is the equivalent of leaving out the word radical in front of Muslims when describing the attacks on September 11, 2001.

This is an example of colossally stupid catholic school mentality and an example of why our catholic schools are in decline. This is clearly the administration's policy and not the children's. For all the positive values these schools provide, why taint it with legacy rules like this that were misguided at their origin? Step into the 20th Century. And then the 21st.

I'm not Catholic but I don't believe this is the belief of the Main Stream Catholic Church because my son attends a small high school that fields a coed soccer team (due to the size of the school) that plays against boys soccer teams from at least two private Catholic Schools without any problem. This school probably still has their Masses in Latin also..
