Baseball final forfeited because of girl at second base
The Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship baseball game wasn't played Thursday night because Mesa Prep's second baseman is a girl.
Paige Sultzbach, a freshman, is playing baseball because her high school doesn't offer girls softball. But the school Mesa Prep was to face in the final, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, said its boys would not compete against a team with a girl and forfeited the game - and the state title - to Mesa Prep.
"As a Catholic school, we promote the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education,” Our Lady of Sorrows said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate KTVK.
“It takes tremendous moral courage to stand by what it is you believe, and they are doing what they think is right,” Mesa Prep Headmaster Robert Wagner told KTVK.
But Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the Mesa Prep team were being done a disservice.
"This is not a contact sport. It shouldn't be an issue. It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field," Pamela Sultzbach told the Arizona Republic.
"I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century," Amy Arnold, Mesa Prep's athletic director, told the Republic.
Mesa Prep and Our Lady of Sorrows played twice during the regular season, but Sultzbach sat out, as they were away games for her team.
“It was on their field, and I felt the need to respect their rules,” she told KTVK.
The final would have been on a neutral field, and Sultzbach wanted to play.
Now, despite being hailed as state champions, Mesa Prep will feel like they've missed something, Pamela Sultzbach said.
"This team has worked so hard," she said. "They're undefeated. They had one game left. At our school, we're taught that when you start something, you complete it, and they weren't done."

The religious nuts in this country are getting crazier by the day. We need to rid society of this dangerous vermin.
You couldn't have said it any better Rob. They won't play a team with a girl on it, how crazy. and as for having her sit out the other 2 games that were played away, poor judgment on the part of that coach. Since Our Lady of Sorrow is now publicly known as a school that discriminates they should lose any funding granted by our Government. Too much crap out of this religion over the past decades. I too am sick of it all. Vermin is a good term!

Where in the Bible does it say boys and girls can't play sports together? I missed that part...
This whole thing is so twisted, it has nothing to do with church doctrine or policy, shame on them. I cans speak with authority because I was educated in Catholic schools all the way through college.
I agree. My Catholic grade school and high school were both co-ed. This is not a Catholic policy, it is the policy of this school and it's pretty sad.

It has nothing to do with their principles. They knew they were going to lose, and they didn't want to LOSE to a girl. Losers.
Now they will have to go through life hiding their face in shame as the team who threw in the towel because they were afraid to compete. That Catholic Church just keeps laying one head trip after another on their sheepish flock.

I would think that a name like Lady of Sorrow would imply an acceptance of the female gender.
The school did not act very gentlemanly.
If America does not teach its students how to compete against those of different backgrounds, it will not continue to flourish.
Not mentioned here, but this "school" actually split from the Catholic church because the Pope was to liberal. Get your head around that one for a minute.
And this is the problem with the religious right; condemn others for not believing as you do. They should have played and been satisfied with their own policies(that they dont mix boys and girls), not expect others to do the same and then protest the other team's differing policy. Now they've cast the seeds of hate onto others just because their values are different. They need to re-check their Bibles under the section regarding love. I guess the name of their school says it all.

It is because of science that many people believe in a Creator. It's because of a scientific principle called causality. You don't get something from nothing. To help you on your journey towards critical thinking, perhaps it would help if you stopped thinking that everyone who acknowledges a God believes that he's an old man with a white beard sitting on a throne sitting atop a cloud.

They tried "Our lady of blessed Virginity" But everyone knew who the father was.
Apparently this isn't actually a Roman Catholic school, it is a sect different from mainstream Catholics. Crummy reporting and needless getting people upset with the Roman Catholic Church for nothing.
