The Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship baseball game wasn't played Thursday night because Mesa Prep's second baseman is a girl.
Paige Sultzbach, a freshman, is playing baseball because her high school doesn't offer girls softball. But the school Mesa Prep was to face in the final, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, said its boys would not compete against a team with a girl and forfeited the game - and the state title - to Mesa Prep.
"As a Catholic school, we promote the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education,” Our Lady of Sorrows said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate KTVK.
“It takes tremendous moral courage to stand by what it is you believe, and they are doing what they think is right,” Mesa Prep Headmaster Robert Wagner told KTVK.
But Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the Mesa Prep team were being done a disservice.
"This is not a contact sport. It shouldn't be an issue. It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field," Pamela Sultzbach told the Arizona Republic.
"I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century," Amy Arnold, Mesa Prep's athletic director, told the Republic.
Mesa Prep and Our Lady of Sorrows played twice during the regular season, but Sultzbach sat out, as they were away games for her team.
“It was on their field, and I felt the need to respect their rules,” she told KTVK.
The final would have been on a neutral field, and Sultzbach wanted to play.
Now, despite being hailed as state champions, Mesa Prep will feel like they've missed something, Pamela Sultzbach said.
"This team has worked so hard," she said. "They're undefeated. They had one game left. At our school, we're taught that when you start something, you complete it, and they weren't done."
I bet if she was dressed like an altar boy they would let her play!
Ah, more catholic crap. Down with the church!
This belief we're supposed to be respectful of also blatantly discriminates against women joining the ranks of upper management in the organization. This is a symptom of a belief system that inherently believes women should not be given equal opportunities to compete.
I'M GOING TO SIGN UP FOR THE GIRL SOFT BALL TEAM , DO YOU THINK THEY WILL LET ME IN ?? JUST TO PROVE A POINT...I KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO SAY NO BECAUSE I'M NOT A GIRL.
They will say 'no' Jose because there isn't a girls' softball team to join–that's the whole point. She is only playing on a boys' team because there are no options.
They'll say no if your school has a boy's baseball team. The only way you can join a girl's team is if that same sport isn't offered for boys. Is that so terribly difficult to understand?
...go ahead. There's a good chance you'd be allowed in. A boy in my school got onto the cheerleading squad.
If they have a baseball team then you would not be able to–just like this girl would not be able to play on the baseball team if her school had a softball team. Do some research- and stop using All CAPS- but then again , actually shows your intelligence.
ONLY if you are good enough, boy -oh!
Did u not understand? It was because the school does not offer girls softball!!! Think before you speak. Plus she gave the opposing team the respect to sit out when they played them at their home field. She didn't do this because she was "proving" a point.....like you say you would do.
IS WRONG FOR HER TO BE IN THE BOYS TEAM.....I'M GOING TO SIGN FOR THE GIRLS POM-POM IN MY HOME TOWN..AND THE GIRLS TEAM.....
Our Lady of Sorrows Academy – truely "Our Lady" will be weeping over this story !
This is a radical Catholic sect that was finally kicked out and its leaders excommunicated by Pope Benedict. You know there's some serious stuff when the Catholic Church actually acts against its own. It's leader, Archbishop Lefebvre, is a real "traditionalist" and not in a good way. This ludicrous issue of girls on the sports field is just the most recent example of their enlightened way of thinking.
Apparently, if they can't be priests, they can't play second base. This is illogical beyond belief. Welcome to the 21st century.
Would boys be allowed to play on a girls team? If you answer maybe or no for any reason then there is a problem with allowing a girl onto a boys baseball team.
MY POINT...BOYS WOULD NOT BE ALLOW TO JOIN A GIRLS TEAM.....A BOY WAS KICKED OUT OF A GIRLS TEAM..IT WAS ON CNN..
Natfka: If there was no boys team in that particular sport, then yes, they should be able to play on the girls team. As the article states, she was only playing on the boys baseball team because they did not have a girls softball team for her to play on. In my school we had guys in both the cheer leading squad and the dance team, which were primarily girls sports. This is the 21st century people! Get into it!
Arizona seems to have cornered the market on crazy lately. I'm assuming that having the girl on the team met league requirements. If you won't play by the league's rules, then you have the right to go form your own league. Otherwise, man up and follow the rules and don't be such wooses about playing against a girl. That fits with MY belief system.
MOVING TO ARIZONA..I LOVE ARIZONA--I LOVE MRS. BREWER-–I LOVE JOE ARPAIO....
Unless Arizona is different than other states I've lived in, the only way the girl got on the boys team was because her school doesn't have a girls team. There are boys who play field hockey in my state for the same reason. And wrestle. So there is no double standard. Sounds like this girl is good enough to play varsity. Good for her.
Crazy? By almost everyone elses standards the answer is YES. But what I really am surprised at is that the rest of us have not adjusted our plan to deal with crazy. Simple solution. Forfeiting means the team they last beat steps in in their place and plays in the Championship game. This eliminates or at leasts limits this to a story about a crazy school that gave up its chance to play in the champiinship game and still gives the other school a game and the league a clean way out. The religious starement stops there instead if penalizing the other team and handing them a trophy. Playing the game against another quality opponent who reached the semi-finals is a much better solution than not having a game.
Tough loss for the kids, but Kudos for the school sticking to their principles – whether we agree or not. Now, I'm curious to see what will happen with the teenage boy that was kicked off the girls lacrosse team in New York.
GIRLS DON'T WANT BOYS IN THEIR TEAM.....MY POINT.
To JOSE0311USMC: Since your name is Jose I assume you're probably a male, so what the heck do you know about what girls want?! I'm a girl, and I LOVED it when a guy tried out for the dance team I was the captain of in high school! I suggest you pipe down about topics you obviously know nothing about.
I tried to join the school's volley ball team, but they wouldn't allow boys to play. In addition, there were no boys volley ball team....
as a true catholic i also believe that the sun revolves around the earth and that God made the earth the center of the universe. that the earth revolves around the sun can NEVER be proven. only a theory of it can be made, and we know that theories can never be proven 100%.
Well put! And would be perfectly true if said 600 years ago.
Hmm... can't ever be proven....kind of like religion, huh?
Tremendous moral courage? Try intrasingence and dogma.
You stay classy AZ.
