Baseball final forfeited because of girl at second base

The Arizona Charter Athletic Association state championship baseball game wasn't played Thursday night because Mesa Prep's second baseman is a girl.

Paige Sultzbach, a freshman, is playing baseball because her high school doesn't offer girls softball. But the school Mesa Prep was to face in the final, Our Lady of Sorrows Academy, said its boys would not compete against a team with a girl and forfeited the game - and the state title - to Mesa Prep.

"As a Catholic school, we promote the ideal of forming and educating boys and girls separately during the adolescent years, especially in physical education,” Our Lady of Sorrows said in a statement, according to CNN affiliate KTVK.

“It takes tremendous moral courage to stand by what it is you believe, and they are doing what they think is right,” Mesa Prep Headmaster Robert Wagner told KTVK.

But Sultzbach's mother, Pamela Sultzbach, said her daughter and the Mesa Prep team were being done a disservice.

"This is not a contact sport. It shouldn't be an issue. It wasn't that they were afraid they were going to hurt or injure her, it's that (they believe) that a girl's place is not on a field," Pamela Sultzbach told the Arizona Republic.

"I respect their views, but it's a bit out of the 18th century," Amy Arnold, Mesa Prep's athletic director, told the Republic.

Mesa Prep and Our Lady of Sorrows played twice during the regular season, but Sultzbach sat out, as they were away games for her team.

“It was on their field, and I felt the need to respect their rules,” she told KTVK.

The final would have been on a neutral field, and Sultzbach wanted to play.

Now, despite being hailed as state champions, Mesa Prep will feel like they've missed something, Pamela Sultzbach said.

"This team has worked so hard," she said. "They're undefeated. They had one game left. At our school, we're taught that when you start something, you complete it, and they weren't done."

Ridiculous, honestly! The game should have been played nonetheless. My daughter has played football...WITH the boys the past two years, competing this past fall as the starting VARSITY kicker, finishing the season #3 in scoring. Ignorance is not bliss, but purely ignorant in this case.

You miss the point.......it isnt just about a girl on a boys team, but the fact that a boy isnt allowed to play on a girls team.

It wasn't so long ago this sort of thing happened if one of the team was black. Now in the USA we see discrimination against women. This is so ridiculous in the year 2012. This is the USA not Saudi Arabia!

The game could have been played. I don't see any problem with it.... even after reading their 'reasoning'. That said, who cares. They have the right to believe what they want and nobody was hurt.

ah, no it doesn't, All it takes are ignorant people following the practices of primitive, ignorant man and justifying it by claiming its God's desire. They look so absurd and can't even see it because they are wearing their religious blinders.

So Joe, where did they say "It was God's will" or "jesus told them not to play'? They didn't. They said that they don't believe in co-ed education, especially in sports and they are sticking to their beliefs. While I don't agree with them, I also think they have every right to believe how they do and act accordingly. From your statements, I'd say you are the primitave, ignorant man and intolerant to those who don't share your beliefs, but then that's your right as well.

Their consequence should be that they are kicked out of the league for the next season. They just discriminated against a female by organized group leadership decision. It's repulsive. Their entire sports program should be banned from a public school league because it's openly discriminatory towards females.

Odds are extremely high that on the team there are more bonified gay young boys than the singular female. Heck, she might even be gay and not even know it yet – and one day she could even marry one of the boys that won't take the field with her. I'd like to get Obama's take on this one?

So they didn't want to play a girl – I don't see the big deal. It's their team, they could decide not to play a team of left handers and I wouldn't care. Everyone needs to not get their jockstraps in a bunch.

I am all for freedom of religion but sometimes common sense needs to rule. I am so ashamed that america can have people like this in it. Such a small trivial thing, but it speaks to the heart of what america can be, and it is so shameful. God will not look kindly on these people, nor on those who hold such biased views.

What a bunch of sissies, they wont play against a girl because the school says the two genders should be educated separately. This isn't education, it's extracurricular. Catholics, go figure. No wonder you see them getting polluted at the bar Friday and Saturday nights, then "repenting" Sunday so they can do it all over again.
