[Updated at 9:55 a.m. ET] Authorities found five people dead Tuesday at a Florida home following a SWAT team standoff with a suspected gunman.
Four people were found dead inside the home and one female was found dead in the yard, officials said. The gunman or gunmen appear to be among the dead, Brevard County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tod Goodyear said.
"We have no idea on motive right now," Goodyear said.
A SWAT team was called to the neighborhood after a report of a shooting at the home, the sheriff's office told CNN affiliate WFTV. The SWAT team entered the home just before 7 a.m. ET, Sheriff's Office spokesman John Mellicksaid. CNN affiliate CNF13 reported police were in a standoff until 8 a.m.
Residents in the area told CNN affiliate WKMG that officers in camouflage and carrying assault rifles arrived. Some were allowed to evacuate the area, WKMG reported.
"If we've made contact with you, then you are free to leave," Mellick told residents, according to WKMG.
This story is developing. We'll bring you the latest details as soon as we get them.
So people have been killed and instead of compassion and concern we have people here only interested in their own state's reputation, or sports teams, or other trivial senseless whinings. The real issue here might be your own basic lack of intelligence, common sense, and your disregard of the value of human life. It doesn't matter where you live, ignorance is ignorance. Your state, wherever it is, is degraded by your own lack of character.
Justin, turn that frown upside down, it's going to be a beautiful day
Dandstn,
Stand down there Buddy....we are just stating a fact that more news like this comes out of backwards Florida, and we would like to have it researched to see if we can prevent future tragedies like this....whoa boy
It's a real shame to hear that a gunman killed a whole family like that.
I was just wondering if there are actual posters on here commenting on the story instead of bashing each other left and right? This is very sad regardless of the situation. People are dead. Florida is a wonderful state. I have lived there for 10 years. I would go back in a heartbeat if my life aloud it. Bad things happen to people everywhere.
What is there to comment about really? All we know is that five people are dead in a haze of gunfire.
What can we say??? Another senseless killing. No one really knows anything yet anyway. The only thing we can do right now is respond with outrage and disgust until we know anything about who and why? I know things like this happen everywhere; however, Florida has been a hotbed of controversy for a long, long time. What kinds of comments were you really expecting?
And what does the illustrious Mr. Wayne LaPierre have to say about this? Yet ANOTHER firearms homicide. I hear the crickets chirp, but no Skunk belch.
Oh, there’s no need for sensible gun control laws. No cause to throw people in prison for 25 years for illegal sale or possession of firearms. No reason to charge irresponsible gun owners with criminally negligent homicide when their kids find a loaded, unsecured weapon on a dresser or in a glove compartment and kill themselves or someone else.
Heck, no Wayne! Heck NO NRA! We should all have full-auto, unregulated clip-size military assault weapons, too! Right? Because THAT'S the only way to protect the 2nd Amendment, right, Wayne?
Hey, how ‘bout your Nazi buddy TJ Ready over there in Arizona, Wayne? A big supporter of yours, mutual adoration society, there…he was a true “Patriot”, wasn’t he? Until he murdered a house-full of innocent people and then took the coward’s way out.
No, this kind of thing will just keep happening and the Right Wing Sad Clown Parade will keep pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into Washington on behalf of the Firearms Manufacturing industry. God forbid we ever get sensible and effective gun control legislation.
Full Disclosure: I was a NRA member from 1980 – 1998, and dropped out when LaPierre took over. I’ve never looked back or regretted that decision as the organization has evolved from promoting Marksmanship and responsible ownership of firearms to becoming a filthy, disgusting mob of Right Wingers bent on a disreputable Socio-Political agenda.
Sick.
I agree! So let's make a list of items we need to ban. Certainly cars. I think cellphones as well as they contribute to accidents. What about sweets? Obesity is a killer. Matches cause fires, let's get rid of them. Chinese foods as well – they are loaded with fats and salt. I guess we probably should ban books because you can learn how to make a bomb by reading them. Jeez almost forgot knives!
Nonsense. There are plenty of gun laws on the books already. The problem is that they are not enforced properly. Most criminals get away with no more than a slap on the wrist when caught with an illegal firearm. More guncontrol only hurts the law abiding citizen. Crimes like this are usually done by someone who should not have had a gun to start with or by someone who would have found some other tool to do his/her deed. In other words, quit your ranting and get knoweledgable about the subject first.
Fear based rhetoric that does not consider the original intent of the 2nd Amendment. The purpose of the possession of firearms as intended by the Founding Fathers had nothing to do with neighbors, but a tyrannical government. If the govt. gets to have fully auto weapons how are we to protect ourselves with single-shot.
Of course, I agree whole heartedly with you. Yes, you should take guns away from everyone who abides by the law and will give it to you. I think that you might have difficulty getting the guns away from those who do not abide by the law. But, of course, in your world, all will obey the man!
So we can safely assume you voluntarily gave up / sold / destroyed all the firearms you owned when you were a NRA supporter? If not, your comment has no merit (not that it had any in the first place).
Yes Lee (know it all), there are.
Story is Yet Once Again, people are killed in a trailer park in ghetto Fl.....we are working on a solution to clean up the state and we ask for your help
Nice speech, Steve
I am working with the US government to sell Florida to Cuba,,,,they are not offering much, but talks continue....will keep you posted
Just another Floridian "Standing Their Ground."
more press propaganda, George ?
I guess the only problem w asking people to stay away from Florida is there is no economy there. The welfare of the state is based on tourism really.. And other low paying jobs... Like real estate. 😉 Florida pays in sunshine, so u need all the tourists u can get!
Yes Crolena... oh... I misspelled... sorry... Carolena! Yes...please, if you do not like the naked Floridians with warm sunshine and sandy beaches... by all means, please leave and go to the cold Northern reaches of this continent. We will continue to find new ways to throw parties. 🙂
George, already used on Page 2, get some new material please
new rules is right, and I Salute him
Daisy, you are just plain wrong....FL has one of the highest crime rates, more welfare, and largest number
of Registered S3x Offenders in the US.... This leads to the sadness that happened there today
You are wrong Daisy
