Preacher, singer Marvin Winans carjacked in Detroit

Detroit pastor and gospel singer Marvin Winans, who delivered the eulogy at pop star Whitney Houston's funeral this year, was robbed and carjacked at a gas station in his home city Wednesday afternoon, CNN affiliates WXYZ and WDIV report.

Winans, pastor at Perfecting Church on Detroit's east side, had just walked out of the Detroit station's convenience store and was about to pump gas into his SUV when four men exited the store and attacked him, he told WXYZ.

The attackers kicked him and took his wallet and his purple 2012 Infiniti QX56 SUV, he said. Winans suffered cuts and bruises to his face, hands and arms, and his pants were torn, WDIV reported.

“This kind of nonsense just has to stop ... it’s just the savageness of what’s happening in the streets. We just have to take a look at ourselves and say this has to stop,” he told WXYZ.

Detroit police are investigating, WXYZ reported.

Winans delivered Houston's eulogy at her February funeral in New Jersey. He also officiated at Houston's 1992 marriage to R&B singer Bobby Brown.

The same devil that is from the Christian religion, where "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God"????? It says that in the Bible, and for a preacher to be the rich man? That's not hate, it is the Word of God.

Here we go AGAIN... This man is more than a pastor. If you would do your homework and know what the hell you are talking about, first you would know that Marvin Winans is a grammy award winning artist and songwriter and does not need the salary from a church. He already has plenty. But the CNN Atheist Bandwagon is all up in this story too. AMAZING... CNN you need to readdress your blogs because while Chrisitans are being portrayed as the haters and the judges EVERY single day on your website, these people are no different.

For one, it does seem over the top for a preacher. But now let's think about it...

It's a 3,500 member church, so it's very large. He's a well-known music recording artist. In fact, he was that before he was a preacher. And he's been recording since the 80's. We know successful singers make decent loot.

So stop with the non-sense please.

The only thing he is guilty of is driving a nice car and wearing a nice watch on the wrong side of town.

  4. Detroit is a dying town

Who would EVER want to live in that dump of a town? Absolutely no reason to go there on vacation, absolutely no reason to work or live there. This is what happens after DECADES of union gouging the guts out of a city. Need another example? Just look over one more state to Illinois – teachers' pensions will gut that state's economy....just a matter of time. Slow motion train wreck.

WV has just as many unions and the economy is strong and the crime is low. Seriously, blaming unions for crime is not only stupid it's absurd.

    • Detroit has it all

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. The unions work with the auto companies and other businesses which has nothing to do with the fact that the last 2 mayors of Detroit stole millions of dollars and were corrupt. Please keep your ignorance to yourself

Obviously you know nothing of Marvin Winans..he was a grammy award winning singer long before he became a preacher and has made way more with his music than his preaching...

He's taxed on his music-related revenue. He taxed on his income. The church, however, is not taxed.

When CNN doesn't give a description of the attackers then you know the description of the attackers.

They were black. Described as young black males wearing blue jeans and white t-shirt. Yes, we realize that this description pretty much fits every brother in Detroit.

They shouldn't if they are living a Christan life. That money came from the people of the church and most of it should go to the poor the sick those truly in need. I bet he buys nice clothes and has an expensive house. "the word of good ain't no hustle" Malcolm X

The economy sucks no matter how much they say unemployment is dropping. Detroit is especially suffering at this right now. There's two lessons here that I see, #1 wwjd... Jesus would not drive an infinity if your preacher is driving one and you're not its tome to change churches. #2 don't flaunt your excess $ in an area where people are just living day to day trying to survive.
