Man questioned in Mississippi highway killings, police say

Mississippi authorities are questioning a man suspected of impersonating a police officer to determine whether he is involved in the killings of two motorists on state highways, a sheriff's investigator said Thursday.

The man was picked up after stopping two drivers, Humphreys County Sheriff Investigator Sam Dobbins told CNN. He was driving a blue Mercury Marquis that used to be a police car and still had flashing blue lights on top, Dobbins said.

Investigators had raised the possibility that someone posing as a police officer is to blame for the shootings, which happened this month about 55 miles apart.

In the first incident, Tom Schlender, 74, was found dead in his car about 1:30 a.m. in the median of an interstate highway last week. A few days later, Lori Anne Carswell, 48, was found dead outside her car on the shoulder of a state highway.

Because of the places where the drivers were found, and because nothing was found wrong with their cars, authorities say it's possible someone posing as a police officer may have signaled to the drivers to pull over.

Authorities say the victims did not know each other.

What kind of PD sells their old squad cars with the light bars still attached?
And does this mean they are going to cancel the advice to call 911 when in doubt of the officer's authenticity?
I have enormous respect for all of the decent, hard-working officers out there, but there are those who will breathe a sigh of relief so they may proceed directly to the beatdown....

As far as I know, they all take the lights off before they are sold at auction, but he could have gotten them elsewhere and installed them.

      Good point.
Never knew light bars were so readily available, but then, I've never wanted one, either...

Cousin Goober couldn't get into the local PD and was worried he might get hurt if he went to Afghanistan.

I keep thinking it's a guy driving an ice cream truck. Or maybe a mobile taco stand. Makes as much sense as a dude impersonating an officer.

You see the N.R.A claims that a pelican was "removed" from the city sector... for trespassing... but as it turns out
the adventurous young bird had traces of various houseplants in her beak.. proving once again that the theory of evolution cannot explain the houseplants... or why pelicans enjoy them, or who shall remove them when someones houseplants are disturbed yet again in the forbidden sectors.

Maybe the guy fashioned his own light bar out of wood and christmas l.e.d.'s and lots of silver spray paint.
CNN: Mississippi authorities are questioning a man suspected of impersonating a police officer.
JF: I wonder if they asked him if he was in Georgia in the past 24 hours.

    @ banasy
I agree with you about how ex squad cars are auctioned off.
What I know is all the high performance parts are supposed to be removed. Any semblence of decals, numbers, or other identifying marks associating the car with law enforcement have to be covered or removed. But they usually leave the spotlight on them, or you sell the car with a hole in it. But some people play on that, putting CB arials on them, to make themselves "appear" official. And usually police department keep a watchfull eye out for these kinds. The standard issue citizen license plate or the absence of one is a dead giveaway its not official. Some plates used by undercover cars look like regular plates, but have a special number series.
