Jogger’s unexplained slaying stuns Missouri city

Harry Stone was on one of his usual jogs in a Kansas City suburb shortly before 7:30 a.m. Sunday when an approaching car slowed down and a passenger shot him.

The vehicle kept going without stopping, and Stone, 60, later died at a hospital.

Nearly a week later, police in Raytown, Missouri, say they have no suspects, and no one has any idea why he was targeted.

He wasn’t robbed. He didn’t have any known enemies. And a gang-initiation hit appears implausible, Raytown police Capt. Ted Bowman said.

“Even grasping at straws and imagining motives, we have been able to find nothing in the man’s background or time or place or associations or his relationships or his history,” Bowman said Thursday.

“Literally, we can find no motive,” he said.

Stone was a homeowners’ association leader and the husband of a pastoral assistant – she was supposed to preach Sunday morning at Raytown’s St. Luke United Methodist Church, CNN affiliate WDAF reported.

He was shot near an intersection by a gas station. Surveillance video from the station shows the shooting, though police have released only footage of a few seconds before the shot, Bowman said.

The video shows a dark-color, four-door car. Police say they don’t know the model or the license plate number. Bowman said a witness was able to describe only the passenger, and the description was light on details: a young African American male with a short Afro-type hairstyle.

A Kansas City police spokesman, representing a multiagency detective squad that looked into the shooting, initially told local media that the killing could have been part of a gang initiation, as CNN affiliate KCTV reported.

But Bowman said Thursday that detectives have determined this probably wasn’t the case.

“We have not found any of the street gangs, that we’re aware of, to make that an open part of the initiation process,” he said.

People who knew Stone told KCTV that he enjoyed serving others, doing things such as helping to build a park next to his church. His daughter, Susan Li, told reporters Monday that he prided himself in keeping physically fit and hoped to get back into running marathons.

Li asked for people with information about the shooting to come forward.

“He was in constant service … to the community, and the community now has the opportunity to be in the service of justice,” she said.

but it will be easier to spot the criminals, and we won't have cowboys shooting 17-year old kids in florida....

You can thank the Florida prosecutor for hastily going after Zimmerman for this. Our justice system is promoting this kind of action through their unjust actions.

This type of nonsense happens in Kansas City (raytown) all the time. There are over 100 homicides a year on average in this midwestern hospitable town. This is no mystery here in KC,this is every other day. Barbecue, Meth, and Murder, but everyone who lives in Kansas City will tell you its a great place to raise kids. Sure it is, if you want to be fat, mediocre, and dodge the crime, oh yea did i mention there is nothing to do here. However people from here don't realize that because they only time they been anywhere is when they went to spring break in Cancun. To bad for this guy, sad.

I lived in Kansas City from 1978-81. Now I live in the SF Bay area, and although I like this area better than Kansas City, I must say your criticism of K.C. is too harsh. Although you're right about the K.C. barbecue being good.

Johnson County is a great place to raise kids. I've never heard anyone say Kansas City is. I do think that there are some very neat areas of Kansas City for adults though. It's not all bad.

Christianity will be the downfall of the European Americans. We were forced to convert from our Old Gods to one that is weak and nailed to a cross... who turns the other cheek and promotes this apologist agenda. Time for the Germanic tribes to reunite the Old Gods and cast out this spineless, Jewish religion of Abraham.

@ Slaveworld & Ben – Yeah, another fella and his friends tried to fashion a 1000 year paradise based on the glorification of all things Germanic; the villification of Jews, Poles, Slavs, Gays, Roma, and others; and a desire to "cleanse" their living space of these groups.- in the end, they had power for not quite 13 years and left a devastated world that couldn't believe the inhumanity they promoted. Yeah, your view of a perfect world is so much better than that of a carpenter who died on a cross and tried to get people to be compassionate to one another. You are in a dark place my friends – and you really should try letting something else besides hate and fear live in your hearts.

And yet, the spineless God of Abraham drove out your tough kraut gods, and they haven't come back. Your break is over, and Mr. Epstein wants you to go back to sweeping out the store room in back, tough guy.

Ghetto Blacks don't need much of a motive to kill. They do it for the thrill. We all know that they killed this guy for "Trayvon". I'm sure Obama, Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakhan and the New Black Panthers are very pleased.

So why is it when a 17 year old black male thats high on pot, and also suspended from school because of pot, as well as several other law infractions, is gunned down for attacking a neighborhood watch person. the story explodes in the media and causes nation wide outrage with police cheifs forced to resign. But when a completely inocent 60 year old white male is gunned down for taking a jog, ther is just a small news note? Interesting...

A neighborhood watch who was several pounds heavier than him and was know for assaulting a police officer and talking about how he hated Mexicans. Zimmerman wasn't innocent. I love how you try to make the pot seem like a deal but say nothing about Zimmerman's record.

To me, the car looks like a 2011-2012 Chrysler 200, based on the chrome trim around the side windows.

Where's the Justice Department. Where are the on going headlines. Where are the people making threats and closing the police station.

It's just a dead white guy that was running around in a tee shirt and shorts not bothering a soul. Who cares.........

The answer to "who killed jogger in drive by?" is: someone who should get killed back.

The word kill is being used figuratively. Killed as in his freedom is killed when the justice system gets a hold of him and a fair trial convicts him/her of a crime 🙂

It is sad that some people have so little respect for human life. This man may be gone, but the person who shot him is also gone in spirit and conscience. God is who takes people from this earth. God does not know murderers.
