As the country heads into the Memorial Day weekend, the traditional kickoff to the summer travel season, there are almost 1.5 million U.S soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines deployed in war zones or combat missions worldwide.
So far, more than 6,400 U.S. servicemen and servicewomen have died in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan - 3,000 in Afghanistan alone - and at least 48,000 more have been wounded.
We encourage you to spend some time looking at our Home and Away feature, where you can discover the individual stories of the fallen.
Do you have a friend or family member in service? Tell in the comments who you are honoring this weekend.
lol with @bobcat(iah)
God Bless you Jeremy, stationed in Afganistan since last September! Be safe see you this September!!!!!!!
I served in the first Gulf War, and I am former FDNY. I SAW the destruction first hand, having been there that hellish day. I don't brag, boast, or glorify myself because it's part of my duty and my job. You don't impress me at all, wannabe 4-F, and you need to keep you anti-American opinions to yourself this weekend, a weekend of reflection of ALL of our fallen heroes, whether you like the POTUS or not. RESPECT those who have gone where you haven't traveled and quit your stupis bragging about stuff that doesn't matter to those who have already DIED so you can enjoy the PRIVILEDGE of hiding behind a keyboard typing your hate and your LIES!!!!

At 14, "a handfull" would be pretty much of an understatement for what I was with my parents. I really started to push things to the limits in my quest for independence. And I was raised in a strict catholic family which probably made rebellious nature that much worse. But they loved me anyway.
What is really amazing is, I've lived here in the deep south for about 36 years now and still haven't completely lost my northern accent. I have kind of a mixture north/south accent and it drive people crazy because they can't figure out where I'm from.
@©bobcat (in a hat)©, Well we share the Catholicism thing and it sounds like we are cut from the same cloth. You would think that living in the deep south for so long, a Southern accent would be more pronounced in your case. When I met my former in laws for the first time, the mother-in-law, a very polite New Orleans lady, said to Patrick in French, leave it to you to pick up a yankee with a horrible New York accent. He was horrified knowing I heard her and spoke French. I just held up my hand and gave it right back to her. To this day she loves me but she is still fighting the Civil War.
@©bobcat (in a hat)©, now you've done it with that last post. Speaking of beer, I popped a cold one a little while ago and read your response and laughed so hard the beer swig blasted all over my cat and PC screen. I have a pizzed off little gato who I am trying to console with treats. I am glad conditions are improving.
@ dazzle ©
Aw girl, you just killed me with that one. I'm still laughing about it as I type. Poor little gato.
Sad part about my last post, is it's completely true.
Did you notice how many posts they've removed ? When I left, there were over 100, now there are like 82. I noticed most of hamstas comments are gone.
@©bobcat (in a hat)©, good night sweet man and thanks for the laughs. I am going to try and make up for the enormous sleep deficit. See you tomorrow.
Yes @©bobcat (in a hat)©, I did notice that his posts have been removed. On Friday Events they removed most of the comments by Mitch and left mine, making it look like I am having a conversation with myself.
@ how rude i have lied about ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. my brother has been in all 3 gulf wars and so would have i if i didnt fail the physical for scoliosis. thats right if you twist your spine in a car wreck you wont pass the physical. so i serve my country the best i can – by working hard. at any time i can go to the doctor and claim disability especially since i broke 47 bones in a fall 7 years ago but i was taught that would be wrong. truth be told i may have to do things differently but i can still function well enough to work so im not disabled.
I see these posts are going crazy again. They've got me repeating myself. Repeating myself. Repeating myself.
It must have to do with the re-emergence of you know who..
Quit the "me me me" and stop bragging about poor you and your "achievenents" because they don't hold any sway with the peope who actually fought and died for this country.
At Nuremberg war trials they said the excuse of " I was just following orders" was not a legal defense amd all partys from generals to privates would be treated the same.
There is a vast difference between Patriotism to a nations ideals and unthinking or rabid Nationalism , Totalarian ststes and empires depend upon nationalism and blind obedience to their will; Democracy cannot exist in an Empire.
Funny how cnn doesn't let "unpatrotic" stay up. Even with no foul language. Seems like the fascist media is at it again
I am honoring my father, Russell Mueller, who served in Vietnam. I am also honoring all of the amazing servicewomen who often go unappreciated. Lastly, I am honoring all of the service dogs that help so many returning service men and women. These service animals don't get as much credit as they deserve.
@geront same point i was making.
Well I certainly will never honor CNN for deleting my posts, that's for damn sure!
