Annan: Syrian suffering 'must end and it must end now'

U.N. monitors say 108 people, including 49 children, were massacred in one Syrian town. Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan is in Syria, though rebels say his peace plan is dead.

Annan delivered this statement to the press upon his arrival in Damascus:

"I have come to Syria at a critical moment in this crisis.

I am personally shocked and horrified by the tragic incident in Houleh two days ago, which took so many innocent lives, children, women and men. This was an appalling crime, and the Security Council has rightly
condemned it.

And I extend my profound condolences and my heartfelt sympathies to the families of the victims and to the wounded – in Houla and throughout the country.

The Security Council has requested the UN to continue to continue to investigate the attacks on Houleh. Those responsible for these brutal crimes must be held accountable. I understand that the Government is also investigating.

It is the Syrian people, ordinary citizens of this great country, who are paying the highest price in this conflict.

Our goal is to stop this suffering. It must end and it must end now.

I urge the Government to take bold steps to signal that it is serious in its intention to resolve this crisis peacefully, and for everyone involved to help create the right context for a credible political process. And this message of peace is not only for the Government, but for everyone with a gun.

The six-point plan has to be implemented comprehensively. And this is not happening.

I intend to have serious and frank discussions with President Bashar Al-Assad. I also look forward to speaking with a range of other people while I am here.

Thank you very much.

Damascus, 28 May 2012"

Annan, aka the Butcher of Rwanda, absolutely loves mass killings. They follow his every visit. His MO is to screw up the negotiations by offering everyone everything, and then gasping in shock as the opponents butcher each other over his

(as I was saying) ...over his promised spoils. If you have a problem with mass killings, genocide or a megalomaniacal dictator, and Koffi Annan shows up, YOU ARE SCREWED!

"the suffering must end and it must end now"... or what? Great job giving a good speech that does absolutely nothing about the problem. Whether it's the completely ineffectual Iranian nuclear talks or this farce of a peace plan in Syria, when will these naifs realize that there's only one way to stop the tyranny of evil men?

It comes down to whether we want to get in another war. It should have been stopped a long time ago, but the American people have not risen up and demanded that it be stopped.

Hey more talk!! Thats going to get something done. Annan was toothless when he had the UN position. Having this guy demand anything is a joke. Whats in it for them?? Nothing. Assad and all of them are going to jail or are going to die. So they will fight to the end. And the arab countries are worthless. They will blame the US for not doing anything.

Any UN action is simply another way of saying US action! It's hard to get international support when the result of these endless revolutions in these Muslim countries is almost always the same – just another name or face on the same human rights disaster and continued oppression under a theocracy/dictator. Ineveitable also is the dictatorial nature of governance there, since these warring factions, religious groups and various tribes have never been able to coexist for centuries! This needs to be solved internally with the help/coercion of other Arab/Muslim states...NOT western intervention, especially the US.

"And this message of peace is not only for the Government, but for everyone with a gun." Question is, would that be a "made in America" stamped gun? c'mon, does anyone really think the UN will step in after Kofi Anna was vehemently opposed to the invasion of Iraq. Even so far as to call the US/ UK's occupation illegal.

Which of course, it was. You can also go to any part of the world and find guns that say "made in America". Doesn't mean the US SUPPLIED them...the illegal arms business is VERY lucrative....criminals LOVE this kind of thing! So, you're advocating putting the US gunmakers out of business?

Why "must" it stop? Nobody on Planet Earth is prepared to do anything about it so why use totally empty words like "must"

This is what happens when the world has a liberal bias. Empty words like 'Please Stop" and "Obama Condems the actions" and "Make Peace" are laughable. Weak is what America is under Obama. Weak is what the world sees us as. Weak is what the UN is.

And as liberals love abortion and love atheism and love evolutionism aka survival of the fittest – they must realize this is what happens...

Liberals – the lovers of peace who kill children in and out of the womb directly and indirectly every day -because it's their right!

As it pertains to Syria, your entire post is irrelevan. This would be just like saying:

Conservatives: thise who embrace Sharia Law, who ebrace the subjugation of wonen, who want to treat them as second-class citizens. Conservatives: who don't care what happens to children once they are born, only that they are, who oppose birth control because it may prevent more children from being born that they ultimately wouldn't care about anyway.

None of this pertains to Syria. Not your rant, and not mine.

Look up the word liberal in the dictionary.
Look up the word Conservative in the dictionary.

After you have "edumacated" yourself, come back and talk.
Right now you sound like a blathering idiot.

All we are seeing from the U.N., as ever, is lip service. If they REALLY stand for anything, it is well beyond time they DID something about this, instead of allowing this siituation to reach the inevitable point where the USA, UK and NATO have to once again take the reins as global police officers.

Thank God, the UN is here!

Good people of Syria, rejoice! The arrival of this latest special envoy means that we're mere months away from initial meetings to discuss the wording of a non-binding letter of condemnation signed by everyone except Russia and China.
