Suspect in cafe killings shoots self, Seattle police say

[Updated at 7:47 p.m. ET] Seattle police say the same suspect was behind both of the fatal shootings Wednesday that left a total of four people dead and two critically wounded. The suspect shot himself as police closed in.

[Updated at 7:25 p.m. ET] A man believed to be the gunman in the killings at a Seattle cafe shot himself as police moved in on him Wednesday afternoon, police said. His condition was not immediately known.

[Updated at 6:22 p.m. ET] A fourth fatality has been reported in a shooting at a Seattle cafe and an apparent carjacking that already left two men and a woman dead, and three others seriously wounded, police reported Wednesday.

Two men were killed at a coffeehouse in the city's University District, while a woman died in the carjacking, Seattle police said. Three more people - another two men and a woman - were wounded at the coffeehouse. One victim in the cafe shooting has life threatening injuries, and two others are seriously wounded, according to police.

Investigators were looking for any connections between the two incidents, which happened about four miles and a few minutes apart, police spokesmen said.

"We're definitely in a dynamic situation right now," Deputy Police Chief Nick Metz told reporters.

Police found the black Mercedes SUV involved in the apparent carjacking abandoned. Video from the scene showed a handgun on the driver's seat of the vehicle. A K-9 is being used to track the suspect. Police officers have brought the dog to inspect the vehicle a few times during the search.

The suspect is described as a white male, between 30 and 40 years old, with a medium build, brown hair and a goatee or beard, police said. He fled on foot following the shooting at the cafe, police said.

"Whether he is armed at this time, we don't know," Metz said. But he added, "We're assuming he's very dangerous."

Metz warned residents in the area not to open their doors if anyone came by who they did not know. He also urged residents to make sure all their doors were locked.

CNN affiliate KIRO reported multiple ambulances, police officers and fire trucks were at the scene.

Criminals will still get guns, even if they're outlawed IT'S CALLED BLACK MARKET...drugs are illegal and last time I checked the United States is one of the larges consumers of narcotics...how's that working out??

ahh, that's a brilliant bit of logic james. So instead of even trying to stop the guns/drugs from getting into the wrong hands, lets just toss our arms up in the air, and say bad guys will find a way to get em, so everyone here's a gun and some drugs. idiot

There was a multiple police murder in the Seattle/Tacoma area a while back. One shooter and 4 armed cops. The shooter lived, but not the cops. Put that info into your concealed weapons calculator.

When these things happen it not only makes you sick but it also makes you question what is wrong in our society – where does this hate and self-pity come from that feeds and justifies these insane actions? And then what can society do to identify and purge this sickness from itself?

      Dear ones,

      It's called:

      Inflated egos
      Lack of faith

      And

People's unemployments checks have been terminated and employment is scarce.

      Protect yourselves. Stay safe.

I've done the research. This has been going on for thousands of years. It's just in the past the media wasn't constantly shoving it in our faces (or didn't yet exst, as the case may be).

Oh, but we don't dare put any limits at all on gun ownership because it's not guns that kill innocent people, right? And everybody needs an AK47 these days for self defense of course. It doesn't matter how often these mass killings continue to escalate, because we all know that crazed lunatics would find other ways to conduct mass killings, right? Wrong! I wish the NRA and all its devotees would just go to hell, and that the sane lawmakers in this country would get some guts and start talking about gun control again, because lots of people out there still abhor guns.

diane, finally a rational person here. Heaven forbid a law is changed in order to save a single life, as long as we have that 2nd amendment to hide behind.

So let me get this strait Diane you want to make it illegal to own guns? Do you really think that's going to make a difference to a CRIMINAL who by the very definition of the word does not follow laws to begin with?
If you outlaw guns then only outlaws will have guns.

No more baby pacifiers for newborns, they all should receive a holster and gun as a present at birth.

new we will get to hear the NRA idiots ramble on and on about how guns don't kill people, and how this is an isolated incident, and how the 2nd amendment is the answer for all of america's problems. You'd think this type of stuff didn't happen every day, eh ?

Hate to break it to you Todd but even if you took away every gun this kind of stuff would still happen but with knives and machetes. Are we going to outlaw everything pointy and sharp? And if someone there had a cc permit we not even be talking about this.

While this is tragic, I am interested in all the knee-jerk comments on both sides. To the folks saying "guns are bad Mm-Kay"- Making something ilegal does not cause that thing to go away. See Prohibition as an example of this. Simply making it ilegal for citizens to own guns (which is a violation of civil rights) will not make gun crime go away. See Chicago and D.C as examples of this. Guns are tools. Humans use tools, for good or bad, as they see fit. When a person wants to do something bad enough, they will find a way to do it, laws or no laws.

  11. So long Boeing Aircraft

Seattle, and particularly N. Seattle, pretty much thrives off od the success of Boeing being located there. A Boeing janitor recieves roughly the same pay as an Union Auto Worker does; 47K plus bennies.
I give it about 5 years before China does to Boeing what China did to Kellog Brown&Root(Halliburton), one time makers of the worlds nuclear powerplants before China dominated the market.
Kellog Brown&Root, once the worlds leader in nuclear powerplant construction, now hires-out picking up garbage after storms in the Gulf of Mexico.
A"course none of this would be possible without the Bush-Bin Laden Group (Carlyle Group to you newbies) making 27 dollar per barrel oil available to China thru Afghan pipelines under BushObama control.

I love all these comments that say if we had more find, and more law abiding citizens carrying guns, these things wouldn't happen. Great. Let's all arm to the teeth on the one in a million chance we'll encounter a gunman in a Starbucks. We can have shoot outs like the old west. How fun! What could possibly go wrong with this plan?
