Face-attack suspect's mother: My son 'was no zombie'
The mother of Rudy Eugene, who was shot and killed by a police officer as he chewed the face off a homeless man in Miami, says her son was "a nice kid" who could have been subdued with a Taser rather than gunfire.
"He was a good kid. He gave me a nice card on Mother’s Day. Everyone says he was a zombie. He was no zombie. That was my son,” the mother, who asked that her name not be revealed, told CNN affliate WFOR.
'Zombie apocalypse' trending as bad news spreads quickly
Eugene, 31, was killed by a police officer on Saturday after an 18-minute attack on a homeless man, identified by police as 65-year-old Ronald Poppo. Video of the incident shows Eugene coming across Poppo on a sidewalk along Miami's MacArthur Causeway, stripping clothes off him and eventually chewing on his face.
Police said Poppo lost 75% of his face in the attack. He was in critical condition at a Miami hospital.
Eugene's mother said police didn't need to shoot her son.
"They could have tased him," she told WFOR. "I saw what happened on TV and I started crying.”
Eugene's girlfriend, who also requested anonymity from WFOR, said the attacker seen in that video was nothing like the man she lived with.
“He loved God. He always read the Bible. He would give you knowledge on the Bible. Everywhere he went his Bible went. When he left he had his Bible in his hand,” the girlfriend is quoted as saying.
“That wasn’t him, that was his body but it wasn’t his spirit. Somebody did this to him,” WFOR quotes her as saying.
Fraternal Order of Police President Armando Aguilar told CNN affiliate WPLG that he suspects Eugene was under the influence of "bath salts," a drug that contains synthetic stimulants that can "cause chest pains, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, agitation, hallucinations, extreme paranoia, and delusions," according to the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
"He was a nice, outgoing, ready-to-help-anybody kind of guy," Cassandra Metayer, a high school friend of Eugene's, told WFOR. “Someone in their right mind doesn’t do that. This is not the act of a normal person. It has to be someone under the influence."
Sgt. Javier Ortiz, vice president of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police, said officials won't know for certain whether drugs played a role in the attack until toxicology reports are completed in a month or so. But he said police have been seeing increased incidents of drug-induced crime in the area.

excuse me? are you blind? i know he was your son and all but really? really? so before what ever happend he was a good person, what he did was deadly to both him and everyone around him. he wasnt your son at that moment he was a blood thirsty hungry monster. he was pretty much a rabid dog at that point. The officer shot a thing not a person there he shot a creature in a mans body. your son was already dead. prey for his soul, and the victums soul, and the officers soul if you like. Just don't blame the officer for putting down your son, you know your son better then anyone else, what would he of wanted done there, sould he of wanted the officer to continue allowing him to eat another person? If he had ever came back to his senses how do you think he would of taken the news that he had ate someone? I bet you know the answer to that, your hurt and lashing out at some one, you know its better he is dead and gone and not having to deal with the results of hsi actions.

I read that he was arrested for beating up his mother though. "Not the act of a normal person" – boy, that's the understatement of the year.
I think the police did an excellent job in handling this situation. Moreover, the mother and girlfriend are making excuses for him instead of waiting on the toxicology reports. This is a wake-up call for anyone thinking about experimenting with drugs.
they could have tasered him? i heard he was still going strong after 3 bullets. dont think a taser wouldve worked. this wasnt a man, it was an animal. if i was a cop, and i came across a dude chewing off someones face, who then turned around growling at me,mthen went to finish his dinner, i wouldve shot him on sight as well.

One wonders what effect tasing would have had on the victim, currently in the middle of getting his face chewed off, with the attacker right on top of him – and they're both naked.
The moral of the story is: Nice Bible-believing people don't do drugs.
You can't tase a man who is eating another man's face. Nice guy? Just because he's hauling around a Bible does not make him a nice guy. If I'm not mistaken, his first wife said he also showed violence towards her.

okay, if I came across a guy eating someone, and he looked at me and GROWLED – I'd honestly think Zombie Apocalypse and shoot him too.
Honestly, had i been the cop on the scene and saw what the guy had done, only to have him snarl and growl at me after i ordered him to stop, I would've emptied the clip into him. If he made even the slightest twitch afterwards, I'd proceed to reload. Possessed or not, high or not..Something was wrong with him and nothing short of death was going to change his mind about what he was in the middle of doing.
