It's National Doughnut Day

Friday is the day America celebrates the doughnut.

National Doughnut Day originated with the The Salvation Army in Chicago in 1938 as a salute to the women who served doughnuts to U.S. soldiers during World War I.

The Salvation Army's "doughnut lassies" continued that service during World War II and cemented the doughnut's place in the American diet. If you want to try to duplicate the doughnut lassies' work in your kitchen today, The Salvation Army is providing their original recipe.

If you're not in the mood to celebrate National Doughnut Day in the kitchen, try heading down to your local Krispy Kreme or Dunkin' Donuts.

Krispy Kreme is offering a free doughnut to all customers at participating locations.

At participating Dunkin' Donuts, customers will get a free doughnut with the purchase of a beverage.

Happy Donut Day folks, forget calorie count and splurge.
Great idea , which though originated rather nobly, to get this nation speed down the sugary slope of obesity.
    good morning all.

Squeeze a plain donut and watch as the grease drips through your fingers. I often wondered why I would get such upset stomachs after eating one until my brother-in-law (a bakery owner BTW) did this. Haven't eaten a donut since then and that was 30 years ago. Just grease and sugar.

  6. 2nd Hand Obesity

You must be over a certain height to ride dangerous roller coasters. Doughnut sales should be restricted to those under a certain girth.
"Sorry Ma'am. Yer too big around for the doughnut ride. We have some nice fruit and grain rides you qualify for though. Are those your kids or is this a Jenny Craig convention."

Doughnuts are fattening. How about national Fruit Day or Bran Day! Ridiculous to praise a sugary food when are working on obesity in the US.

Given the expanding (pun intended) obesity rates in the US perhaps a national broccoli day would be more appropriate?

I'll stuck to my Fastnacht/ Faschnacht/ Fausnaught day on shrove tuesday (Fat Tuesday). That is the real "donut day". It's a PA Dutch thing (German, Switzerland thing). There is nothing better then a Fastnacht or Kinkling (in MD).

  14. Black Market Junk Food

Even if there were to be a nationwide prohibition on junk food... (reference alcohol prohibition's underground 'Speak Easy' saloons, bars, and brothels)...*Eat Easyies* would be everywhere, with FBI agents smashing barrels of corn fructose and arresting fat people.

Folks – lighten up a bit. Doughnuts have become part of the popular culture. We associate tehm with police and the Simpsons. People who don't eat them aren't going to all of the sudden because of a stupid advertisng holiday.
