[Updated at 10:23 a.m. ET] The U.S. believes one of its armed helicopters was shot down over Afghanistan on Wednesday, killing both crew members on board, a U.S. military official said.
"It is likely that the helo today was brought down due to enemy small arms and RPG fire," the official said. The chopper was a U.S. Army OH-58 Kiowa Warrior reconnaissance helicopter. It went down over Ghazni province.
In a statement, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the downing of the helicopter, saying a rocket was used.
"After the rocket hit it, the helicopter came down and took fire," said an e-mail sent by Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid.

Is there glory in the sad, sober loss of life?
Would we shoot down helicopters invading our country. Ya betcha, best stay out of other peoples lands.
Wasted lives.
My grandson was killed when his Kiowa helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan Wed., June 6, 2012. It was not a wasted life; he was very dedicated to the freedom that we all enjoy and so proud to fly for the USA. We must honor them all as they serve our country, no matter where they are serving!
Ms. Kingman, thank you for your family's sacrifice on behalf of our country. Sorry for the insensitve people here but please know that your grandson didn't die in vain. From one military family to another, prayers for your family, may you feel God's comfort at this time and may memories bring you a smile.
Ms Kingman, I am very very sorry for your loss. Thank god there are still good families that produce great young men that understand and bear the cost of freedom, like your grandson. It is a shame we have lost two more brave men. I am sure they had a glorious reception when they met Jesus. There are many of us out here that were aware of his sacrifice, and all the others that we queitly lose every week. Thank you and your family. And god bless!
Erma,I got this through the Be The Match paorrgm, and we live 5 houses apart! I\'m proud to have been with the paorrgm for many years. Thanks for sharing your story!
