Obama to sign beam of One World Trade Center

With the under-construction One World Trade Center fast approaching its final height, President Barack Obama will visit the New York tower Thursday to get an update on its growth and help prepare one of the finishing touches.

Obama is expected to sign a beam that soon will be placed at the top of the tower, said Mike Pinelli, general superintendent of the Tishman construction firm.

"We're going to have our topping-out beam placed on the street" so Obama can sign it, Pinelli said. "It's typically signed by everybody on the project at some point, and then we're going to erect it shortly thereafter to signify the topping out of (the tower)."

Obama, accompanied by first lady Michelle Obama, is due to arrive at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport in the late afternoon and at the construction site about 5:15 p.m. ET to get a briefing on the building, currently 104 stories and 1,300 feet tall - already the tallest structure in New York.

Also in attendance will be New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The visit to the Lower Manhattan site, where the National September 11 Memorial and Museum also is being built, is Obama's fourth. He last visited it in September to mark the 10-year anniversary of the 2001 attacks by al Qaeda that killed more than 2,000 people and destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

Under construction since 2006, One World Trade Center surpassed the Empire State Building (1,250 feet) as the city's tallest structure in April. The tower's builders say it will surpass Chicago's Willis Tower as the tallest building in the United States, with a final height of 1,776 feet - a nod to the year of the Declaration of Independence.

One World Trade Center is expected to be completed next year or in early 2014.

Obama's visit will be the first of his three New York stops on Thursday. He'll attend two fundraisers in the evening - including one at the residence of actress Sarah Jessica Parker - before he returns to Washington late Thursday night.

The height doesn't matter what this symbol stands for matters.
It does not stand for man's folly, arrogance, blood lust, greed or frailness of power. It should and I hope would stand for Peace, humanism , hope, freedom and the awesome strength of human spirit to triumph over calamity.

So, Obama thinks we have a "stalemate" in government.

    Now, he's blaming Congress.

Well, he HAD CONGRESS IN HIS POCKET FROM 2007 (last 2 yeasr of Bush's term) until the 2010 elections, when the PEOPLE took back the HOUSE and made a few in-roads in the Senate.

Congress is doing EXACTLY WHAT THE PEOPLE WANTED IN 2010.

    STOPPING HIM!

And, he won't work with Congress (rarely even talks to a single Congressman...EVEN HIS OWN PARTY PEOPLE!).

And, a great number of those Congressmen causing the stalemate are: Democrat!

Not a single Dem vote in either House or Senate for the last 2 mega-spending budgets Obama has submitted.

And, the House HAS PASSED A BUDGET.

The Senate DEMS won't even discuss it!

So, can't blame it all on the Republicans.

Now, it would be super if HE WOULD WORK WITH CONGRESS TO GETS THINGS MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION!

    But, he WON'T!

And, I do NOT want any more of his spending, Marxist programs.

    Usually, stalemates are bad things.

But, is this one really bad? Not if it stops him.

And, he could always break that stalemate.

If he really, really wanted to.

    But, he DOES NOT.

    That would mean compromising.

That would mean giving in on his un-real spending.

And, he will NEVER DO THAT!

Spending what you don't have is the issue?
FEDERAL DEFICIT SCOREBOARD as of June 1, 2012....Total Deficit 15.72 trillion $
8.41 trillion accrued during GOP presidencies...........(53.5%) of the deficit accrued during Republican presidencies)
      7.34 trillion " " DEMO " ............(46.5%) of the deficit " " Democratic " )
Loud statements do not change the facts........the GOP is the party that has run up this deficit.................

Cheryl, how does Obama have the congress in his pocket in the last two years of Bush's administration? Even after Obama became president, the senate used the fillibuster more than ever in our history. It is pretty clear which team puts winning elections ahead of what is good for America. That would be the party where the senate leader openly said "our number one legislative priority is to make sure Obama is a one term president."

The rest of your post is equally flawed in factuality.

Cheryl, are you high? Obama has done nothing but try and compromise. The Republicans have done nothing but block him. It's completely disingenuous to say Obama has had control of Congress. The Republicans have filibustered more than any in history. Get a clue.

    Wrong.
World Trade Center 7 has been rebuilt and completed in 2006.

My God SteveInDenver, where were you during the first two years of Obama's Presidency? He had a) control of the White House, B) Control of the Senate and c) control of the House... How else did he get ObamaCare passed. Get your facts straight...

It is something for America to be proud of, irrespective of who the president is.......Any patriotic American would understand the importance of respecting the office of the presidency, even if you don't agree with the person sitting there. I feel sorry for you.

Although I am not a personal fan of Obama I do like the symbolism of the current President of the United States signing this beam as the building is finished. That will be a good part of American History.

I am a little disappointed that they are bringing the beam down to street level for him to sign. He should show some good old fashioned American guts and go up to the top to sign that beam.

They aren't going to lower the beam for him to sign, he will sign it before it goes up. I do agree however that would be cool to see...

Man I wish they'd cool it with the "Global community" rhetoric which at first was encouraging and refreshing to me, but now seems somewhat heavy handed and forced. "One World Trade Center" is clever in that it could arguably be referring to the fact that there is no twin accompanying the building, but everyone knows what is being implied here. I just think they should tone it down.
