Julian Assange requests asylum in Ecuador, foreign minister says
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has formally requested asylum in Ecuador, the country's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said.
Patino, speaking at a press conference in Quito, Ecuador, read from a statement that Assange was currently at Ecuador's embassy in London, England, where he formally requested asylum. Patino read a statement to reporters at a news conference in Quito. He took no questions.
The request comes after the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom on Thursday dismissed an application filed by an attorney for the WikiLeaks founder who was seeking to reopen his appeal against extradition to Sweden.
The application was Assange's last option in the British courts. Britain's Crown Prosecution Service has previously said if the court dismissed Assange's appeal, his only further remedy is to apply immediately to the European Court of Human Rights, and Assange's attorneys have vowed to do so.
The appeal itself would be a rarity, as the court's decisions are supposed to be final in Britain.
Assange has been fighting for a year and a half against being sent to Sweden for questioning about accusations of sexual abuse. Two women accused him in August 2010 of sexually assaulting them during a visit to Sweden in connection with a WikiLeaks release of internal U.S. military documents.
WikiLeaks' work is not at issue in the extradition matter or the Swedish allegations against Assange.
Assange has not been charged with a crime, but Swedish prosecutors want to question him about allegations of "unlawful coercion and sexual misconduct including rape," according to a Supreme Court document.

Oh, come on. Considering what he has exposed, how can anyone with even the slightest level intelligence think that these accusations are not totally false. If they actually had anything on him, they'd charge him with a crime. Frankly, I'm surprised they haven't fabricated evidence yet.
I am unsure if he did or did not commit a crime, however the fact that he is fighting like crazy to going back home is an indication that he may not be innocence.

Listen up redneck republicans... He's innocent. The government cannot continue to hide information from it's citizens. These allegations are completely false and brought on by the various government he has brought to justice. Remember when Cheney and all those congressmen were going to released on that madam's list a few years ago? Then she mysteriously died days before the release? Yea, government has too much power.
Despite not liking this egomaniac, I at first gave him the benefit of the doubt and assumed these charges were unwarranted acts by people wanting either their 15 minutes of fame or an opportunity to extort some money from him. But this man has gone to such unprecedented lengths simply to avoid being questioned by authorities about these charges that I now have to give them some merit. Assange is likely some degree of rapist. But that's not surprising. People with egos as large as Assange typically think they are above both the law and society's morals, often bordering on sociopathic behavior.
He has gone to great lengths to avoid Sweden because it is quite clear that this has nothing to do with people wanting fame or money from the guy. This has everything to do with very powerful governments wanting him shut down by any means necessary. He isn't stupid. He knows exactly what going to Sweden would mean.
Why would Ecuador take him? I mean, being a country in Latin America, Ecuador might be more likely to send him to the U.S., just to do a favor to the Americans who might return that favor someday with some aid, or something like that. Sweden is more neutral turf, I'd think.
Of course, this could be a publicity stunt. But Assange would NEVER do something like that. Not in a million years. Never, ever, ever.
