Military official disputes report of Mubarak's clinical death

[Updated at 6:09 p.m. ET] Conflicting reports emerged late Tuesday over whether the 84-year-old former president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, had died.

The state-run Middle East News Agency, citing medical sources, said he was declared clinically dead shortly after arriving at a military hospital in Cairo, where he was taken after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest earlier in the day.

But Gen. Mamdouh Shahin, a member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, told CNN, "He is not clinically dead as reported, but his health is deteriorating and he is in critical condition."

Fast facts about Hosni Mubarak

Adel Saeed, the official spokesman of the Egyptian prosecutor, had said earlier, "We were informed by prison authority that Mubarak's heart has stopped and they used electric shocks and CPR to resurrect him. He is now on an artificial respirator and doctors from the armed forces and International Medical Center will inspect him."

Nile TV reported that Mubarak had suffered a stroke.

Elizabeth Cohen, CNN's senior medical correspondent, said that "clinically dead" usually refers to someone who is brain-dead. In such a case, an electroencephalogram would indicate no real brain activity, she said.

Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison June 2 for the killing of pro-democracy demonstrators last year. He already was suffering from health problems and attended court on a gurney.

His health has been reported to be in decline since he was ousted as president of Egypt in February 2011. On June 11, a prosecutor's spokesman said Mubrak's health deteriorated after the verdict, and that defibrillators had been used several times to revive him "due to heart complications."

Mubarak's latest health crisis came on a day when both candidates who participated in a presidential runoff claimed victory.

I really have to question weather or not this is torcher and if so this is by far the meanest thing i have ever heard of bring someone back to life is hard enough doing it over and over and over again must be questioned. His son is in the next cell and has to repeatedly watch this happen to his father sure he may have been a harsh leader to our standards (if any of the info is actually true) but let him go this has to be taking a toll on him and his son.

If you don't even know how to spell "torture," how would you know what "torture" is?

Wert, I think you mean "WHETHER or not this is TORTURE. And your sentence structuring is terrible. Try reading what you just wrote BEFORE clicking the "post" button.

Why do I have a feeling he will soon be joining Ken Leigh of Enron in that great big place in the sky known as Paraquay? Funny how the former head of the Egyptian Military is so gravely ill he will likely have to be transfered to a military hospital. The same military that's always in power in Egypt come what may.

    People of the World,
There was a movie in the late 1980's with Joe Piscopo (the Comic from SNL)where an evil genious created a machine to bring important people back to life after death as long as the price was right. In the end two revived dead cops revive the evil genious in his own machine after he kills himself and they do it twice so in the end the evil genious explodes and dies really painfully. So it appears like Murbarak is getting similar treatmen.

Based on Assad actions against Surian, Mubarak deserve, I think, a forgiveness and free to die sooner.

Interesting how these guys always develop major health issues after being sentenced. He'll fake his death with the help of doctors and officials he'll pay off with his stolen loot, and then live out he rest of his life comfortably on a tropical island somewhere.

Too small of a dose? Obama has done a good job of getting rid of anyone friendly toward the west in Egypt and other Muslim countries and willing to work make peace with Israel. You'd think that jail would be enough for Mubarak.

I live in the good old USA. If those that believe non_Muslims should die, then bring the fight and find out gets deported, shot, or stuckin prison, then bring it. we have plenty of ammo and not afraid to use. Most of them have no balls to do it, because they prefer women to do it for them!!!

    • Frankly Speaking..

".. If those that believe non_Muslims should die, then bring the fight...", you should have no problem finding "these people". Just go to any republican convention and you'll find a match! Coz all muslims I know do not believe that nor does their koran professes it. You can interpret any book to say what you want it to say..

Soon Mubarak will be out of the reach of the islamists. They keep reviving him in a sick revenge to have him die over and over again.

You may have Obama confused with Egyptian voters. Being a GOP supporter that is probably easy for you to do.
