Hamas says military wing agrees to cease-fire with Israel

[Updated at 8:30 p.m. ET] The Palestinian group Hamas says its military wing has agreed to an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire with Israel following a sharp increase in violence between the two sides.

In a statement posted early Wednesday, Hamas - which controls the Palestinian territory of Gaza - says it will observe the cease-fire as long as Israel remains committed to the agreement.

There was no immediate response to the cease-fire announcement from Israel, which said more than 75 rockets had been fired into its territory from Gaza in the past three days. Six Palestinians and one Israeli died between Sunday and Tuesday in a spate of rocket attacks and Israeli airstrikes, officials on both sides reported; Israel also said a Palestinian child was killed when a rocket launch attempt by militants backfired.

I certainly hope this proves to be a step towards Peace. Neither side has been able/willing to end the conflict through violence. Perhaps they are waking up to that fact and realize that the killing has to stop.

Was this another "you (the Palestinians) give up your weapons and stop attacking us (Israel) and we will keep our weapons and keep attacking you until we finally feel safe and we double pinky swear that we will keep all of our weapons but stop attacking you.. unless we figure out some reason we need to attack you again deal?

Your cause and effect are twisted. Hamas is the one attacking CIVILIANS with their terrorist rockets. Israel goes after the TERRORISTS who are shooting those rockets in order to stop them.

If Hamas gave credible peace a chance, not only the Israelis win, but the entire Arab world too. Egypt and Israel proved that they can live peacefully, and opened the boarders. But if Hamas think Israel will be duped into thinking they can let their guard down, not so fast. Israel must always have the ability to defend itself and wipe out its enemies. That is its only chance of survival. Hamas needs to prove their intent, not just talk the talk. Stop all missiles out of Gaza, now and forever.

Hamas may have agreed to a ceasefire, but what about Hezbollah? What about the other splinter groups shooting rockets into Israeli houses. I know Israel is not innocent in all of this, but every time the cease fire is agreed upon, the rockets still fly and Hamas is not the only group trying to eradicate Israel.

It is about time these two countries start contributing to the world instead of trying to kill each other and then looking for help from outside sources. And when those outside sources do step in they are criticized to no end and never once reimbursed for their effort or loss.

Hey Rogue, Israel contributes more to the world per capita than any other country. An incredible amount of life-saving medicine, scientific advancement, technology, and agriculture come from that little country. And that's with a huge portion of their resources forced into self-defense – imagine what they could accomplish with peaceful neighbors!
