Who calls the shots on abortion laws?

A new state law may force the closure of Mississippi’s only abortion clinic.

Politicians who signed off on the law say it is needed to help provide safe conditions for Mississippi women who seek abortions. On the other side, many are concerned about the state of women’s health care and the role of religion in the decision.

On Facebook and on CNN.com, debate has sprung up on all sides about the motivation and implications of the law the could make Mississippi America’s first abortion-free state.

The role of religion

Starece McNeal Westheimer We have freedom of religion........why can't we have freedom FROM religion

Paul Firszt There is a separation of church and state for a reason. If you do not like abortions don't get one. BY trying to make everyone abide by your morals you turn our democracy into a theocracy.

Robert Buchanan Just because one does not believe in abortion, does not make one a "fanatic".

Richard Askew I hope they do (abortion is bad you think GOD would approve killing his children no he wouldn't he will strike you for it but then again he would forgive you because he forgives everyone) GOD BLESS hope it passes

Personal choice versus personal responsibility

Rich Gettle I'm glad they would close. What's sick is the attitude of some of these people on here. U have sex, there are consequences, like being a parent. Suck it up and be responsible

Lisa Rondeau That is wrong! This is not the stone age, it is our choice!

Brad Pennison ‎@ lisa. what if your mom made that choice

Victoria Hammond If you are going to have sex at all, THEN BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENCES. It's a sticky subject because of different situations.

What about women's rights?

Anna Marie It just sucks to be a woman all the way around. Nobody wants to get an abortion but sometimes , there is no other choice. Especially in a society that faults you for having an abortion, then faults you for being on welfare if you cannot independently take care of it. Adoption unfortunately is for caucasian babies. All other races are very hard to adopt out. Sometimes a woman cannot bear to bring the baby full term because they are in terrible circumstances at the time of gestation.

Robin R Robin anna...there's always choice...it's called birth control...and abstinence ... Adoption...etc

Tammy Britton Women of Mississippi if the men take this right away from you they will take others. You have the power to stop it. Plus the next state is just hours away.

Daniel McDowell how about the rights of the unborn child? you know, life...

What happens now?

Cristy Mccauley Well, they will find more dead babies is trash cans now. More 15 year girls on trial (for) murder. Truth is, if they don't want to have a baby, they will find other ways to kill it or themselves ... Horrible ways. Why is this an issue for the courts in the first place? If people just raised kids the right way, there would be no use for these clinics in the first place.

Education as prevention

Earl Snider If you have no intention of educating young women AND men on how destructive an unwanted pregnancy can be to a young woman's life, then you have no business infringing on the life-changing decision that is being made. Spend your time and money reducing the the number of unwanted pregnancies and the abortion issue will become moot.

The role of the parents

7ruthere  Laws requiring "parental consent if the patient seeking an abortion is a minor." OH NO! you poor poor women! Every surgery or operation needs parental consent if on a minor, the fact that people think abortions should be an exception blows my mind.

endapathy  It's a touchy subject sometimes. If the baby is the result of the rape of a parent, close family member, or close family friend, some kids can't look to their parents to talk about it/gain consent.

What's right for Mississippi?

Caleb Christman good! thank god for STATES RIGHTS! want an abortion? fine. go to louisiana or alabama. if mississippians vote for the law, that's what mississippians want in THEIR state. are you people to use your own argument against you, are you so selfish you want to run others lives? let mississippi do what they want and if you don't like it, there are 49 other states w abortion clinics to choose from.

William R. Hunter Just a heads up, not all of us down here agree with this. Adding into the unemployment. Pathetic isn't it?

Glenda Moore If the people of Mississippi don't like it then they can vote these idiots out of office. Get out there...get involved...bring out the voters. Funny how the GOP are always talking freedoms but then take it away.

Parent, not "parents",mickey. 50 milllion potential Americans have lost out to abortion, legally. (there are no stats for illegal abortions, only estimates of how many were lost)

I still dont believe this is any of our govmt business! They are infringing way too much on peoples personal lives & not taking care of the things they were elected 2 do! And its damn easy for MEN to afflict their opinion on women, & not be responsable!

My last comment of the night. I think that it is sad that many people change there names, so people can not get a picture of whom they were speaking to. I know people agree with some of what i say and disagree with others. That is what bring a human is all about. I'm just mickey, i never change my name. Some people who agree with me on some accounts, probably hate more for other opinions. But i am honest about my thoughts, and changing you r user name is a deceitful practice. Good night to you all.

It is NO ONE's business except the two involved. If they decide to abort, it is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. None. You can talk smack about the people all you want, feel morally superior is your self-righetous, call them "murderers", but at the end of the day, it's still NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. People don't give two farts once the kid is born, but boy, they get all holier-than-thou when it comes to telling some one else what to do. Give out your address. Let's start dropping kids off at your doorstep. Otherwise it's STILL NONE OF YOUR BUSINES!!!!!!!!!!

People can call it murder of unborn children if they want! The point is, if it isn't your child, it's not your decision! Do you make decisions for others as to how to raise a child? No? Then why should you be involved in a decision to keep a child that isn't yours!? We all have to make hard decisions pertaining to our own lives & it's not the govt., the church, or the pro-life crowd's business to interfere w/what's right for me & my family! Take care of your own biz & I'll take care of mine!!

So if a mother let her toddler play in the traffic you'd say fine, that's her choice?

Before you say "It's not a baby" Theses are some of the methods used:
Cutting off the arms and legs while the baby is still alive to make the forced birth "easier" for the mother
Poisoning [slowly] a living baby with saline solution [they are born black!
Sucking out the brain of a living child
Leaving any surviving babies lying in a cold, dark room for up to 4 days until they die.
Partial birth abortion – they turn the child so it is born feet first. They pull the baby out until only the head is left in the birth canal – then they cut the spinal cord to kill the child. As long as the head is still inside the mother it's not murder!!!!!

Bols of cells DON'T have 4 limbs.

Like Eve bringing death apon mankind, some of her female dencendants play God with another human life.
It is what is it, no matter how you slice it.
Freedom of choice comes with a price... Everlasting life. "for surely you will die"

One thing for sure, the husband has no legal say about life and death in this matter.
So be it. May the voice of your dead baby haunt you for the rest of your life.

Youre wrong about that Philip. If a woman is married her husband has to consent also.

And what about the men who force their wives/girlfriends to have them because they want no more/any children?
Thoink those women can't be forced?
      Think again.
I personally know a husband who did this to his wife because he didn't want any more...through threats of taking financial stability away from her...she's old fashioned and never held a job...this type of thing exists, you know.

I wasn't wishing ill on the abortists. I was simply pointing-out the fact that even the woman in the landmark Supreme Court case that made abortion legal (Roe v Wade) years later admitted being haunted by her dead child for all those years.
The only abortists who do not feel their child calling for them, are the ones on pain killers, or who continue using s ex as a drug.

Nobody "likes" abortions and we really need to get into prevention...birth control...BUT it's a disgrace to think that the Catholic church and now the Teavangelicals have hijacked our freedom to choose within the law. Nobody forces anyone to get an abortion and it should never get to that point, but we are on a slippery slope to a theocracy here!

@rabble. So you'd prefer the current system where a faceless executive indirectly makes that decision based on how much bonus they will get paid? You shouldn't listen to Palin – she's only doing it for publicity and the money that generates.
