Reports: Justin Bieber cited after freeway chase

Pop star Justin Bieber was cited for speeding on a Southern California freeway Friday after a trying to evade paparazzi in a high-speed chase, according to news reports from Los Angeles.

L.A. City Councilman Dennis Zine, a former police officer,  told CNN affiliate KABC-TV that he witnessed the incident on the South 101 Freeway in Studio City and reported it to the California Highway Patrol.

He said Bieber was traveling at about 100 mph in his Fisker Karma hybrid.

"It was like a rocket ship coming by, I'm not exaggerating when I say that,"  KABC quoted Zine as saying. "When it passed me, it had to be going close to 100 mph."

Zine told the Los Angeles Times that the chase between Bieber and the paparazzi spread across the freeway and even on to the shoulder.

"It was like slot cars, they were going so fast," the Times quoted Zine as saying. "It was a very dangerous driving situation. I figured someone was going to crash,  so I called 911."

CHP spokesman Saul Gomez told Reuters that Bieber was cited for driving 80 mph in a 65 mph zone.

CHP officer Ming Hsu said an officer saw a car pursuing Bieber but that it fled when Bieber was stopped.

The incident drew a crowd on the roadway, one witness told KABC, with motorists stopping to take Bieber's picture.

Zine told the Times the paparazzi should have been cited as well as the 18-year-old singer, but he said the pursuing photographers were no reason for Bieber to speed.

"Anytime you do 90, the paparazzi are going to go 90," Zine was quoted as saying.

80 in a 65 zone? That's not exactly diabolical, people.

He was actually going 100. The cop cut him a break. 80 in a 65 lets Biebs do traffic school, or pay a pretty small fine, without losing his license. You don't get tickets for 80 in a 65 zone in California except in a few particular places as long as you are going with the flow.

He may have been going fast, but you can't tell me that you can do 100 mph on the south 101. It's simply not possible unless it was 4 am.

That would be the weaving in and out of traffic part.

A non-celebrity (of any age) would have been chased by the entire police force, bullied, searched, carted off to jail, charged with something and his car would've been impounded!

It is news because the police failed to go after the other speeding car. Whenever there is a clear case of police misconduct, it is news. Unfortunately, CNN chose to focus on Bieber the girly boy (who despite his appearance is an adult and NOT a teenager) instead of on the failure of the police.

He was fleeing from the paparazzi – and then when he got pulled over, motorists stopped on the roadway to take his picture...? There seems to be something ironic about that....I'm not sure. At any rate, those motorists could have caused an accident just as much as Bieber speeding. Did THEY get cited? I have nothing good to say about the paparazzi...they have no respect at all for the privacy and dignity of celebrites. Nevertheless, it's not a reason for Bieber or ANYONE to go speeding along the freeway. They really shouldn't HAVE to, but one can only imagine what it's like to try and get away from a swarm of bees that want to get in your face. Hopefully he'll slow down in the future, and strive to find a way to deal with this unfortunate consequence of being such a huge celebrity.

Exactly! He appears to be going through his "bad boy" phase. Lets just hope one of his stunts don't go to far and he hurts himself or (more importantly) someone else in the process of HIS reckless behavior. -Lady Vee

I am worried about this boy ...first assaulting his Papa-Rossi and NOW 100 mile an hour evasive maneuvers on our Kingdom's High-ways... He needs to reconcile with his Papa Rossi before he kills some body....

Typical cops. Going after the victim instead of the perpetrator.

Are you nuts. He was not the victim, he was driving at unsafe speeds and risking the lives of others around him all because he doesn't want his picture taken by the Papz. You want to live the life of a star means you have to deal with the annoying papz. Put your hat and shades on and ignore them, or ride around in your heavily tinted limo instead. Plus, something tells me he can afford the ticket and his insurance rates going up pretty easily, just a hunch.
