Trayvon Martin memorial removed but preserved, city says

An impromptu memorial to slain teenager Trayvon Martin has been dismantled, but the items that composed it are being preserved, the city of Sanford, Florida, announced Monday.

After consultations with Martin's family, city staff members removed the items from the entrance of the subdivision where Martin was shot in February during a confrontation with neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, City Manager Norton Bonaparte's office said.

Zimmerman, 28, was released from jail Friday after posting bond on a second-degree murder charge. He has said he shot Martin in self-defense after Martin assaulted him.

The city workers moved the objects to the Sanford Museum on Monday afternoon, the announcement said.

"All the items retrieved have been carefully handled and inventoried," it said.

The announcement listed all the objects moved to the museum:

  • One large wood cross, 58 inches tall, painted white with American flag on the top and photo of Trayvon Martin on one side.
  • One wood cross, 36 inches tall, painted white, with the words "Justice for All" in black on one side.
  • One string of silver plastic beads with a heart.
  • One ceramic angel.
  • One ceramic cross.
  • One wood and metal heart.
  • Three standard size footballs, one small football.
  • One Styrofoam cross with blue artificial flowers.
  • Several wreaths with artificial flowers and many loose artificial flowers.
  • Two small American flags.
  • One green balloon weight with yellow artificial flowers.
  • Two Mickey Mouse balloon weights.

What does this have to do with a museum? Why weren't the items moved to the parents house?

I totally agree! What on earth did Trayvon do that deserves a place in history? This is nothing but a political move to appease the Jessie Jackson, Black Panthers, and Al Sharpton crowd that is making this a racial issue! Give it a freaking rest!

@hide behind: I know THIS because it is public knowledge. Remember, that was the reason his bail was revoked? And it doesn't matter who gave him the money, or why, the fact is: he DID. So, to assert that the Martins would " cash in" from this tragedy, without acknowledging that Mr. Zimmerman did, is one sided at best, and hypocritical to say the least. (and I'm not the one who brought up cashing in, I just commented on the post that did)

The main reason this country is going the way it is is because of the hatred everyone has for each other. God help us.

    "Zimmerman cashedin on this incident?
Do tell how you know THIS?"

Everyone knows this. It is both a matter of public record and the reason Zimmerman's original bail was rejected – he lied about his finances.

Not to come across as patronizing, but you really should read the news.

You blame Trayvon? He was being hunted down by an armed adult who was so wrapped up in his own sense of vigilance, false authority and paranoid delusion, he couldn't make the most simple of judgement calls.

Zimmerman got out of his car. Zimmerman pulled trigger. And yet you blame the kid because he may have tried to defend himself.

Attack a man, get killed. Then get immortalized!

    More Irony:

Race card holders state "you're blocking progress" if you completely ignore race in the conversation. Talk about hypocracy. The kid attacked someone with a gun. Plain and simple. Don't care what color anyone in the situation is. But I'll tell you what, al sharpton or jesse jackson wouldn't say a word about it if it was someone of a different color. That should speak volumes about where racism truly lies. You're welcome.

I totally agree with "Common Sense"!!! What if Zimmeran was half black or black... would there be protests then? Would Al, Jessie or The Panthers show up then???? How many racial slurs where thrown at white people? Who made it a racial issue so much that a black congressman was compelled to wear a hoodie??? WHO made it a racial issue???? It sure wasn't Zimmernan.. he was fighting for a life after being jumped and having his head bashed in. I don't care what color you are, I would have shot him too!

more comments from the zimmerman supporters who believe the delusional gun mans story about being attacked and head pounded on the side walk . only one problem with that story ... medical evidence says the injuries are not consistent with the claims. bottom line there was a fight "that no body knows who started" and the only life threating injury that night was a bullet hole in TM chest.

on the night GZ was released the police and state officials had no idea who DEE DEE was , and she a had a totally different story about what she heard. which sounded more like someone attacked or grabbed TM. "get off, get off"

but getting a little off track here, this is about TM memorial, is it too much to ask that the zimmerman supporters take their pro GZ comments to any of the other 100's media sites running the story?

How about all the money you fools spend on pets every yr, how much money the city spends every yr cleaning up behind your pets. Many cities spend millions building dog parks. I would bet that more money is spent feeding & medical on pets that on illegals

The kid deserves what he got, his parents are milking all the publicity, and money, they can get and poor George was trying to defend himself.

Why not the museum this will be written about one day and maybe in the history books. we should all learn that hate and bigotry only stained society. Zimmerman was wrong for following travon, even when cautioned by law enforcement not to follow. This is history in the making.
