Trayvon Martin memorial removed but preserved, city says

An impromptu memorial to slain teenager Trayvon Martin has been dismantled, but the items that composed it are being preserved, the city of Sanford, Florida, announced Monday.

After consultations with Martin's family, city staff members removed the items from the entrance of the subdivision where Martin was shot in February during a confrontation with neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, City Manager Norton Bonaparte's office said.

Zimmerman, 28, was released from jail Friday after posting bond on a second-degree murder charge. He has said he shot Martin in self-defense after Martin assaulted him.

The city workers moved the objects to the Sanford Museum on Monday afternoon, the announcement said.

"All the items retrieved have been carefully handled and inventoried," it said.

The announcement listed all the objects moved to the museum:

  • One large wood cross, 58 inches tall, painted white with American flag on the top and photo of Trayvon Martin on one side.
  • One wood cross, 36 inches tall, painted white, with the words "Justice for All" in black on one side.
  • One string of silver plastic beads with a heart.
  • One ceramic angel.
  • One ceramic cross.
  • One wood and metal heart.
  • Three standard size footballs, one small football.
  • One Styrofoam cross with blue artificial flowers.
  • Several wreaths with artificial flowers and many loose artificial flowers.
  • Two small American flags.
  • One green balloon weight with yellow artificial flowers.
  • Two Mickey Mouse balloon weights.

Of course it's a publicity stunt...blacks love to assume and milk the "victim," role....once Zimmerman is found not guilty, they'll file a civil suit against the city of Sanford, if they haven't already, because someone let their child get shot.

If Zimmerman had no marks on him then you could think that he just shot Trayvon because he was black..... That is what you blacks want to think. Then why did he have marks showing he had been in a struggle? Plus I know you would love it if Trayvon was shot in the back. NOT! Zimmerman will never spend any more time in jail. Or at least I Hope not.

Pete – If Trayvon was my kid he would NOT have been out that late at night for a candy and drink run. He CERTAINLY would not have been walking as I would have taken him. And he would NOT be dressed like a wannabe gangster thug sneaking around the neighborhood and being aggressive towards an older adult who is asking him what he is up to.

But he was NOT my kid and now we have one less criminal to worry about.

Some of the people who dismissed Trayvon as a thug are racists, plain and simple.

I cannot wait to see the racists' reactions when Mr. Zimmerman is found guilty of all charges.

When all the real evidence is reviewed, Zimmerman will never spend another day in jail. I mean the facts not things that have been made up by the blacks. He will be free.

The only thing you are going to see is Mr. Zimmerman go free and Mr. Zimmerman sue ABC and NBC for deformation of character.

My kids don't attack people. They don't loiter and prowl at night. They don't use illegal drugs, they don't vandalize schools, etc. etc. etc. If one of my kids got killed because they attacked and tried to kill a man, I'd be mortified that I hadn't done a better job of raising them, not passing around buckets for money or pretending to cry on TV.

Zimmerman is a cold blooded murderer, a thug, a coward and a first class liar! On the night of the incident he told the dispatcher that Trayvon approached him or in his words, "he's coming to check me out" (that is after Trayvon was tired of running for his life after being stalked) but on the police report recently released to the puyblic on Zimmerman's testimony at the precinct, he told the police that Trayvon was hiding in the bushed and suddenly he jumped out of the bushes and attacked him. Then if that was the case, how come Zimmerman didn't say that to the dispatcher on the night of the shooting? Instead he said, "he is coming to check me out." What a modern day travesty!

Why didn't they choose a snapshot of the alledged victim wearing his famous HOODIE that proves he was so innocent? Theat would have been perfecto for the museum!!!

Did any of you people read the list of things moved to the museum? That must be one IMPRESSIVE museum they have there in Sanford.

MOVED to the museum, not DISPLAYED by the museum.

My guess is they, unlike many of the commenters here, have SOME compassion and don't want to offend the family that LOST THEIR SON by damaging or losing parts of the memorial. Since 'not damaging or losing stuff' is kind of a museum's job description, it kinda makes sense for them to do it.

Pete, I didn't realize you were a witness to this case! Since you have insider information to the case (aka you "know" that Trayvon is completely innocent) you shouldn't be blabbing on the internet. You'll jeopardize everything!

In all seriousness, all the facts are not in yet. You only know the story the media has portrayed. Jumping to any conclusions at this point is just stupid. We have a justice system for a reason. Let it work, then draw your conclusions after EVERYTHING has come to light.

I know that Zimmerman chased him, which is exactly what the 911 operator told him NOT to do.

Trayvon might or might not have done something wrong... but Zimmerman DEFINITELY did.

Could you please explain what partt of my comment you disagree with? What I stated is what George Zimmerman told the Sanford police prior to shooting Trayvon and what he later told the police after being apprehended! He gave two conflicting stories of what happened the night the child was shot! Hey, I'd last more than 24 hours in CJ because I use the facts presented!

Facts presented by who. You have information not facts. The information is taken from unreliable sources that have a vested interested in creating chaos. Unless you are one of the attorney's in this case you have nothing but an interpretation.

An 18 year old is not a child first of all. And..........the police gave out what zimmerman said, correct. But, not all of it, out of context and it was reported by someone who makes his articles sound more interesting than they are. So maybe they gave the information out both times in it's entirety and he reported every other line each time leaving a word or two out each time to make it sound conflicting.
