FAMU president resigns amid hazing scandal

The president of Florida A&M University announced his resignation Wednesday, more than seven months after the drum major for the university band died following a hazing incident.

James H. Ammons said in a statement he is leaving the post he has held for five years, effective this fall.

"After considerable thought, introspection and conversations with my family, I have decided to resign from my position as president in order to initiate my retirement on October 11, 2012," he wrote in a letter to the chairman of the school's board of trustees.

Ammons said he would remain as a tenured professor on the faculty.

The resignation comes after the November 19 death of Robert Champion, 26. Champion died within an hour of being badly beaten during a hazing incident on a band bus following a football game in Orlando, Florida. The ritual, called "Crossing Bus C," is an initiation process in which pledges attempt to run down the center aisle while being assaulted by senior members, according to some university band members.

The president, James Ammons, and the band director just did not get it. They were so wrong in allowing hazing to happen for so long. Both probably are getting millions for resigning.

Ammons saw the handwriting on the wall. Just a matter of time before He was dismissed. Someone has to assume the responsibility for the death by hazing that brought bad PR to the college.

A innocent student was essentially murdered by a gang, and the school he was serving knew about the gang and did not act. Actually, I CARE.

You bet – where is the outrage for this innocent African American college student and band member, compared to hoodie-thug Trayvon?

This guy thought he could do anything, nothing in this case, because he was black. Black Obama as a bad example is causing troubles for other blacks- rightly so in this hazing matter. Without the national attention Barack Obama was able to avoid attention for promoting killing all races except blacks by paying Wright but not after being elected president. More studying is catching others now.

Black people need the school. The alumni have a great deal of pride in their school. Leave it alone.

FAMU had a terrific marching band and I resent to total destruction of it. One person should have that much power. Said student was very obese it wasn't to take much to send him over the edge. I think there should be a small payout and get the band marching again. Period.

You do realize that going to college is about getting an EDUCATION? The band activities are marginally important at best.
