Syrian protesters demand Annan's removal amid reports of 'massacre'

Syrian protesters Friday demanded the removal of international envoy Kofi Annan after hundreds of deaths a day earlier blamed on shelling by government forces, opposition activists said.

Annan - a former U.N. chief - is serving as a special envoy to Syria for the United Nations and the Arab League.

He implemented a peace plan in Syria in April, but opposition fighters and regime forces have largely shunned its mandates, including a call to lay down their weapons.

"It is clear that the Annan mission is no more than providing more time to Assad to remain in power and commit atrocities, killings and massacres," said Ahmed, an activist from Homs who did not want all his names used for safety reasons. "He is but a legitimate cover for the crimes of the Assad regime."

Protesters took to the streets at dawn in solidarity with victims of government shelling late Thursday that left at least 220 dead in the village of Tremseh in Hama province, according to the opposition Local Coordination Committees of Syria.

    Unbelievable. This is how it's going. Annan comes in speaking peace for the world while he demands an armistice so that his back door rebels can get a toe hold in Homs and outs Assad. Assad sees this and continues to fight off al-Qaeda (aka, western backed "Syrian Free Army"). Innocents get ki lled and Assad is blamed and condemned for ALL of the atrocities? Just the sound of that alone should make the masses question the truth. With no one touted by the west as a replacement for Assad and no plan to stop backing the terr orist's (Free Rebels) whom are fighting for a regime change NOT democracy, sounds like they want to continue war, not stop it. KNOCK it OFF! We don't want to pay for anymore wars, "democracy's", proxy wars, funding of future enemies and most of all, FUNERALS!

      chrissy,
      I also agree with you as I also believe Assad cannot be trusted. My point is that the west removal of western heads of state has always helped the people of the world, said nobody ever.

    Intervention and militarily is what we are looking for and the mayhem would continue until this agenda gets the go.@Mary,
    yes Assad may not be 'angelic' but neither are the forces arrayed on the other side.
    I quite agree with @revnow's assessment and" we don't want to pay for more wars....."

    I've been biting my lip to keep from saying it:

    Annan SUCKS!

    btw – I don't buy into any of these theories that there is a huge conspiracy to get American troops in Syria. Believe it or not, the world doesn't revolve around us.

      @Hope.
      you are right the world doesn't revolve around US.The sad part is that we like to think so and the policy makers have always tried to get it to do our bidding.
      @chrissy
      Right. Just today Israeli deputy pm exhorted US to take a tougher stance against Iran and our sub drones are on their way to Hormuz.

    lol @ saywhat, np dear friend. My comment was based on the fact that other national networks have been saying Assad and company are at this very moment moving chemical weapons. Something is amiss and its not all on the rebels.

    No matter who, no matter what, when, where or why; whoever or whatever the agenda is behind all the machinations, whether it is governmental or rebel, I will say this: no US boots should touch Syrian soil!
    The blood of innocents needs to stop, but Hope is correct in one thing: the world revolves, but not around the US.

    Even tho i agree with you banasy, you do know just as i and everyone else, Israel is gonna drag us into that war whether we should be or not. The plans have been in the works especially since the last military budget was passed.

  11. HIDE BEHIND

    What was Annans position after leaving UN?
    He works and sits on board. of a George Soros funded organization.
    Yes the very same Soros who Obama is a close friend and beneficiary of multiple campaign contributions from multiple Soros foundations and fronts, had a private chat and then came the hype of an African bad man depicted. on an old outdated film that Soros refinanced and so 100 spec ops and a 1000 support went to protect an area Soros has vast (billions) of mineral and energy concerns.
    Annan a close friend and former schoolmate of Hillary is but one more pawn inUS corporate military politics, and as such in world outside US has the respect of a corporate shill and no more.

      Somebody gets it. Follow the money! So sad we live in a country where we would spend 260 million to see Se x in the City 2 in 2010, the same year that 20 million people died of starvation. SMFH
