Top five Friday the 13th incidents

Whether you're just a little more cautious today because of various Friday the 13th superstitions, historically, the day hasn't always turned out to be, well, normal.

Here's our wrapup of the top five worst Friday the 13ths.

In 1939, the Black Friday brush fires began in Australia. The fires ended January 20. They left 71 people dead, 1,000 people injured and 3,000 homeless.

In October 1972, the Andes flight disaster left 16 survivors after two months.

In January 1989, the Friday the 13th virus struck hundreds of IBM computers in Britain.

In 1996, Tupac Shakur died September 13 of gunshot wounds sustained a week earlier.

And in January, the Costa Concordia cruise ship ran aground on the island of Giglio, Italy, killing at least 30.

Today, as part of our coverage, CNN Radio's new Soundwaves blog is also featuring a podcast about tempting fate on this date, as well as a little history of how the superstition came to be. It also questions the kind of experiences people have had on this rare day.

The Belief Blog also has a breakdown, written by Connecticut College professor Stuart Vyse, exploring why exactly we fear Friday the 13th and how superstitions manifest themselves.

It's also National French Fry Day, so do with that what you will.

Let us know how your Friday the 13th goes, and what superstitions you have in the comments below.

Actually Tupac was a political activist who was assassinated for his beliefs and for attempting to unite the systematically dejected black community, while bringing social injustice to light. He was assassinated for challenging the status quo and for trying to achieve for his community the liberty, propserity and equality that this country claims to stand for. He opened up more minds and achieved more than you and your myopic point of view ever will

Debatable, although it seems apparent Sug Knight was involved as well as a cadre of police officers he hired as security.

I am not joking. No more weeks of uncompensated hours beyond my salary. I will consider Friday 13th a day of liberation.
We'll see what Monday the 16th brings.

Statistically, of course, Friday the 13th is no more lucky or unlucky than Thursday the 22nd or Wednesday the 17th or Tuesday the 9th, etc.

What happened to the whole reason Friday the 13th became such a dreaded day on the calendar? It was only an epic massacre in the name of greed! Come on people... learn some history!!

Thank you. I wondered how the massacre of the Knights Templar could have missed the list!

So how bout the reason Friday the 13 is notorious in the first place? October 13th, 1307: Hundreds if not more of the Knights Templar were arrested by the king of France and murdered primarily for their financial holdings.

Or I guess you could go with Tupac.....

In 1307, Friday October 13th, King Philip the Fair had every Knight Templar in France arrested. A legend was born.

I would stay indoors on Friday the 13th. I know I am. We have a trampoline and I could fall off it today if I went on. We also have a pool and I could drown in it even though i'm a very good swimmer. And there are hornets nests around our house and I could get stung for the first time.

You're afraid of too many things. Unfortunately, any of those things could happen just about any which day. Disaster never checks a calendar before striking. Trust in the Lord with all your might, and lean not to your own understanding.

You got everything right except aliens. Sorry, but this tiny planet is not the only one with life in the entire universe. 100 billion galaxies each with 100 to 500 billion stars = life elsewhere.

Common sense would dictate that. Nevertheless, SETI has been listening to radio waves from all over the universe for 50 years and haven't heard a peep, which is odd, to say the least. 30 years ago most people thought there should be life somewhere else in our Solar System. Now we know that isn't so. Our Lord Jesus Christ made a haunting statement that has led many to believe that there is life somewhere else in the universe, He said, “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd." Jhn. 10.16 . Be that as it may. If there is life somewhere else, I hope they find it during my lifetime.

    • Your Lord Jesus Christ

Exactly what percentage of the UNIVERSE do you think SETI has covered by listening to radio waves. At least understand the science behind it. They've maybe covered thousands of stars when there are roughly 100 billion in our own galaxy... Not to mention there are hundreds of billions of galaxies.

Seriously I agree with MRMr. Stop with the "Our Lord Jesus Christ" (the emphasis on our) and take some responsibility for your own beliefs, and stop trying to shove that down peoples throats. Jesus Christ is not my Lord or savior, AND it has nothing to do with this article.

On that note.. your comment is about "Your Lord Jesus Christ", and him talking about his flock of sheep becoming one big huge herd when he calls them.. sheep herders still do that today when the sheep wander. Don't know what that has to do with SETI or the article.

ppl who think theres no life outside of earth are usually fools who blindly follow a religion taht deflowers children inside their own house, drags their feet to investigate it if they can't cover it up, and has a guy who is supposedly god's chosen one but hides behind bullet proof glass cuz he knows its all bull and laughs as the money and kids keep comin SUCKAS

There's absolutely nothing special about this particular date or any other. Bad things, and good things, happen all the time. We should live life one day at a time, trusting in the Lord, and trying to be as obedient to the Bible as we can. To believe that any particular date is bad in itself is a form of idolatry and ignorance. Trust in the Lord with all your might, and lean not to your own understanding, In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will grant you the desires of your heart.
