Massive ice island breaks off Greenland glacier

The Petermann Glacier before the ice island broke off this week.

An island of ice twice the size of Manhattan broke off this week from a Greenland glacier, a University of Delaware researcher reports.

The 59-square-mile (150 square kilometers) iceberg is the second massive loss for the Petermann Glacier in two years, researcher Andreas Muenchow reports. In 2010, an ice island four times the size of Manhattan was lost from the glacier.

“While the size is not as spectacular as it was in 2010, the fact that it follows so closely to the 2010 event brings the glacier’s terminus to a location where it has not been for at least 150 years,” Muenchow says in a university press release.

The researcher says its too early to blame global warming for the loss of Greenland ice, however.

“Northwest Greenland and northeast Canada are warming more than five times faster than the rest of the world,” Muenchow says in the press release, “but the observed warming is not proof that the diminishing ice shelf is caused by this, because air temperatures have little effect on this glacier; ocean temperatures do, and our ocean temperature time series are only five to eight years long — too short to establish a robust warming signal.”

Muenchow says the massive chunk of ice is expected to eventually enter the Nares Strait between Greenland and Canada, where it will break up into smaller icebergs.

That could take a while. Pieces of the 2010 calving can still be found along the Canadian coast as far south as Labrador, Muenchow said.

U know, the truth is this: if any of u weenie lefties ever inherited some land that produced oil, I guarantee u would happily accept any money that came with it. There is no way u would stop the oil production in the name of saving delicate mother earth. The only reason that u are a weenie leftie is because u have nothing to lose by being one. Those of us who actually produce something other than eggheaded propaganda for the left are smart enough to see global warming, excuse me "climate change" for the sham that it is.

Because name calling and spewing hate are the best ways to make a point...

Everyone liked science when it was telling us we could go to the moon and build faster cars. Now that science is telling us our lifestyle is not supportable in the long term some folks want to discredit it. When 99.9% of climate scientists say global warming is real, and the other 0.1% are oil company shills, that should mean something.

Whether the warming trend is natural or man-made shouldn't even matter. Clean air and water are necessary to life as we know it. We need to find ways to reduce pollution before it's too late.

Oh, the joy of finding it.
Here's how it will end (self edited: add 's' to 'hit', replace 'g' with 'a' in 'gas')..

Carbon Dioxide is an insulator, it traps heat. Plants strip carbon from CO2 making it O2 (you know thats the hit we breath). More CO2 than O2 increases the temperature. Poor plants can't live, can't make O2. Poor humans die. When humans are dead, so is human CO2, plants come back, eat CO2, make O2. No humans, the world is in balance.

There is nothing HUMANS can do to hurt the earth, humans on earth are like a fly on an elephants gas. HUMANS will only kill HUMANS (oh, and alot of animals too).

Have a nice earthy day, enjoy fun in the sun!

Clearly plintwit, you have very limited reasoning abilities coupled with a very limited imagination. Most likely cause from all your intracranial vacuity. Perhaps you should get out more. As your mentor once said, “Stupid is as stupid does.” Yeah, that’s you alright.

No it isn't photoshopped. There are images online showing the region at different times of the year where the snow cover varies. Jeez.

Are you joking? You do realize that Greenland is pretty big and there is variation in the geography. People like there, in homes. There's even some farming there and ranching.

Most food comes from only a few unbrella companies that control the all the other food industries. All cows and other animals are fed corn as well as the main ingredient to most packaged food in the grocery stores. The main problem is that large corporations are greedy and trying to find the cheapest way to make more money i.e. feed the cows corn. I think people should be more aware of it because it's effecting us.

Why is it always "the size of Manhattan"? Is this a new international standard of area measurement? Whatever happened to "I quit drinking because my liver was the size of Wyoming"? Has The Excited Snakes discovered The Wheel yet?

But the GOP says that there is no global warming so it must be true! According to GOP, the Earth cycles through climate changes every few hundred/thousands/millions of years so there's absolutely nothing to worry about.

The people who say 'No Climate Change' because it's based on millions of years of cycles are the same one's that also say the Earth is only 6000 years old. So which is it????
