Russia, China veto sanctions on Syria

Russia and China vetoed a new U.N. Security Council resolution Thursday that would have imposed new sanctions on the Syrian regime.

Western countries have been pushing for a resolution that threatens sanctions against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad if government forces don't stop attacks.

However, Russia has opposed any international effort that would blame, punish or change the leadership of the Syrian government. Russia and China have vetoed two previous draft resolutions in the U.N. Security Council, leading to accusations that Russia is protecting the Syrian regime.

The resolution also calls for renewing the 300-member U.N. observer mission for 45 days after it was suspended because of violence.

Russia has put forward its own draft, which "strongly urges all parties in Syria to cease immediately all armed violence in all its forms."

U.S. President Barack Obama called his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to discuss the Syrian situation, the White House said in a statement Wednesday.

"They noted the differences our governments have had on Syria, but agreed to have their teams continue to work toward a solution," it said.

The Civil War in Syria is coming to an inevitable conclusion. Revolutions are won by the people desiring it and the Syrians want it badly. Russia and China see yet another ally going by way of the Dodo. Why should they wish to hasten it ?

It's just a shame so many innocent lives have been lost in the process.

Really?!? So the US pushes for sanctions, China & Russia veto and you blame Obama? I could understand blaming O for the economy or for a number of other things going wrong right now in the US. But you blame him for this? What a troll.

I agree with Barry G – "that's what people said when Hitler invaded Poland and the rest of Europe." If we fail the Syrian people now, we lose our moral imperative, which has always been my greatest source of pride in the US. When I read the history books and see how so many Americans wanted to avoid getting involved in the war against Hitler, it makes me sick. But I wasn't alive then. I'm alive now, and isolationists in 2012 make me sicker.

And the US vetoes any sanctions imposed on Israel when they clearly deserve to be punished.

"And the US vetoes any sanctions imposed on Israel when they clearly deserve to be punished."
Please site the clear evidence for such a statement? methinks its an opinion.

Russia has their only remaining base of significance in Syria. of course they are going to veto any sanctions.

And the US provides Israel $3 billion in military aid annually to strengthen the US presence in the Middle East, so "of course they (US) are going to veto any sanctions."

Putin the coward will go down on the wrong side of history and he will regret it. China as well. And Putin's people will (as they have) start protesting loudly at his tyrannical ways. Shame on the cowardly Russians and Chinese.

What do you mean, WE are becoming isolated? IMO Russia and China are isolating themselves by showing support for such hierarchy. This is a real eye-opener; a peek behind the iron curtain...

Being isolated may be just what this country needs. We've been on the cheap international teat for ages, so getting along without it will be tough, but it can be done. And I MEAN "ISOLATION", no free handouts to no one...let europe carry the old worlds load, we'll take care of home here, and maybe our neighbors.

Simple solution, let China and Russia work together to resolve this horrific situation.. Time for the UN to disolve, because they are rather ineffective. And for America to stop sending money to countries that support this regime...
