Russia, China veto sanctions on Syria

Russia and China vetoed a new U.N. Security Council resolution Thursday that would have imposed new sanctions on the Syrian regime.

Western countries have been pushing for a resolution that threatens sanctions against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad if government forces don't stop attacks.

However, Russia has opposed any international effort that would blame, punish or change the leadership of the Syrian government. Russia and China have vetoed two previous draft resolutions in the U.N. Security Council, leading to accusations that Russia is protecting the Syrian regime.

The resolution also calls for renewing the 300-member U.N. observer mission for 45 days after it was suspended because of violence.

Russia has put forward its own draft, which "strongly urges all parties in Syria to cease immediately all armed violence in all its forms."

U.S. President Barack Obama called his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to discuss the Syrian situation, the White House said in a statement Wednesday.

"They noted the differences our governments have had on Syria, but agreed to have their teams continue to work toward a solution," it said.

defjam I have to disagree with you, its time we as a country quit the UN and stopped funding this group of thieves, have them leave the United States for good, Caroline i agree its time we returned to a more neutral stance with China and Russia cutting funds to their respective countries, China has defaulted on bonds sold to Americans so their credibility in world fiance leaves a lot to be desired, both countries must live with their choices and since they are the ones that are not dying it should help with their conscious, and yes we could ignore them and race to the rescue, then find out just how good those Migs really are against ours..

What did you expect. The Chinese and Russians' view people as cannon fodder. Human life to them is cheaper than oil or sales.

I promise to you that Putin the coward will go down on the wrong side of history and he will regret it. China as well. And Putin's people will (as they have) start protesting loudly at his tyrannical ways. Shame on the cowardly Russians and Chinese.

Syria is fighting the exact same enemy the West is fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. China and Russia are correct in vetoing such actions NATO wants to take. Just look at Egypt and Libya for Syria's future if the USA Gov't gets its way.

You can't use the Libyan example any more. Libya in their first ever democratic election voted in a liberal secular government friendly to the west. Shame on you for being an appeaser and justifier for a killer who has massacred over 17,000 Syrian civilians. NO to Bashar the baby killer and YES to freedom for the Syrian people!

What they're not telling you is how the US is funding a rebel group and using the liberation movement as a proxy. If you honestly think Russia and China are advocates of genocide, you're gonna have a bad time.

Very disappointing that the international community can not intervene to stop the bloodshed that is led by Assad regime.
Russians and Chinese are using the Syrian problem to bargain with the westerns countries.
I believe that the international community should intervene and give help to the Syrian people in their revolution

zagg, do you even know whats happening over there? I'm guessing not. These Rebels are terrorists like the ones in Egypt and the ones in Libya. The international community would be fools to support such terrorists again.

It's a bad situation, however I don't think supporting the muslim brotherhood over throw of syria(who from what the news and wittness accounts seems to be the driving force of the rebels) is the answer

    Forget China.
    And forget Russia.
The Arab world has been rebuked now for the third time.
How many more would it take to realize that these countries are not friends of the Arabs - and feel none of their pain.

Remember IRAQ and its "Weapons of Mass Destruction" we went in for? Do you ever question why we are still there with no WMD found? What you are hearing here is a part truth – a preparation for another invasion and war.

If the US isn't viewing Russia as a hosile enemy to our country then Washington has it's head so far up it's b_tt that they wouldn't see light if a nuke went off. Russia and China clearly have a hostile agenda towards the US. I'm not sure what their end-game is but they want us weakened so their position is stronger. They fear our military and rightfully so, their sabre rattling and their do-nothing policies make this SO clear that to deny any other explanation is to admit you'd rather stick your head in the sand. The UN is a useless body and should be disbanded and NATO expanded because it's becoming more and more clear that the situation in the East is NOT anywhere near as peaceful and calm as everyone would like to see or admit too.

      Pathetic...
You want war? Even without nuclear weapons we succeeded in tens of millions lost lifes in 2nd world war, which actively took place in less than 20% of worlds surface. You want an all out conflict? There will be no winners you know...

Are you delusional ? US is in Iraq and Afghanistan killing their civilians. They are also in Libya and have their armies all over the world. Don't spread you lies about how goody is the US military. Face the facts... the US military has been too busy murdering civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan. Is it any wonder that US are not been looked on favorably in the Middle East.

The U.N. is the most useless organization the world has ever known, a toothless tiger. Russia and China will protect Assad while the U.S. under Obama will cower in the corner. To the Syrian people, if you want freedom, fight for it. You're on you own.
