Russia, China veto sanctions on Syria

Russia and China vetoed a new U.N. Security Council resolution Thursday that would have imposed new sanctions on the Syrian regime.

Western countries have been pushing for a resolution that threatens sanctions against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad if government forces don't stop attacks.

However, Russia has opposed any international effort that would blame, punish or change the leadership of the Syrian government. Russia and China have vetoed two previous draft resolutions in the U.N. Security Council, leading to accusations that Russia is protecting the Syrian regime.

The resolution also calls for renewing the 300-member U.N. observer mission for 45 days after it was suspended because of violence.

Russia has put forward its own draft, which "strongly urges all parties in Syria to cease immediately all armed violence in all its forms."

U.S. President Barack Obama called his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, to discuss the Syrian situation, the White House said in a statement Wednesday.

"They noted the differences our governments have had on Syria, but agreed to have their teams continue to work toward a solution," it said.

What about people that are getting killed in southern Saudi and Bahrain? no-one mentioned them? the states and UK & France don't care about them getting killed over there? or they only care about the Syrian people? Even CNN is afraid of mentioning anything that might hurt the Saudi's feelings.
Saudi and Qatar supplied the rebels in Iraq with weapons to KILL the American & UK soldiers in the name of insurgencies!!
Forgive me but you guys are sheep and the Saudi are moving you from one direction to another

Once again money is placed ahead of doing what is right. And Russia and China are probably afraid something similar might occur in their countries... freedom is contagious.

If it weren't for vodka and fortune cookies, Russia and China would be totally useless, (like the U. N. is). I hope the world considers things like this when they throw their hatred towards America. We may have our issues but people are literally dying to get in here. Since events like this can affect every country in the world, every country in the world deserves a vote and the majority wins.

Actually.. people are flocking OUT of this country in record numbers... look it up. The world hates us and now our own citizens are starting to hate us as well.. might as well get used to it. it's not going to get any better.

Obama is not respected by the leaders in other countries. They know he is intellectually light and any suggestion by Obama to "get tough" is rooted in a passifist lie. We are leaderless in the U.S. Even the SEAL Team 6's commander stated yesterday that Obama is NOT respected by our own military! It's time for a new President, one that we can ALL respect.

@Arcy – you're incredibly "light" yourself. Obama is a graduate of Harvard Law School and was and editor and president of the Harvard Law Review, one of the most respected journals in the world. But being the dim bulb you are, I'm sure you were unaware of that.

Syria is fighting al-qaeda. Why is it alright for only the US to fight al-qaeda? Leave Syria alone!

Whats curious is, we're actually FUNDING and ARMING Al Qaeda in Syria... ironic huh?

      July 19, 2012 at 11:42 am | Report abuse |

The US does not fight al qaeda.

The US created al qaeda as well as the Taliban. Hillary Clinton has said so. John McCain has called them heros. Although America created al qaeda, they are now operated by certain gulf states which in turn have a quarrel with Syria.

Check it out. Do your homework. Start by writing down which player (nation) is involved in the battles on which side. This is a very revealing exercise.

For example: US, UK, France & Israel back the rebels against Assad. Right? Latest statements from King Abdullah II of Jordan says that elements of al aqeda are operating with the rebels against Assad. Connect the dots. Al qaeda is fighting ON OUR SIDE. Why?

The issue is Sunni vs. Shia Islam. It has nothing to do with liberty or even human rights. It's a feud and we are caught up in it. We buy our oil from Sunni Saudis so we are forced to back their play whether we want to or not.

but that's just me, hollering from the choir loft...

Agree. But hopes on Romney? I dont thinks so. Neither one is good for our country.

      July 19, 2012 at 11:53 am | Report abuse |

SYRIA has been a client state of Russia since Soviet days, but Syria, like Iran, is mostly Shia Islam while Saudis & Qatar are Sunni. Qatar is financing mercenary rebels via the offices of the Syrian National Council in Istanbul.

The rebels, not Assad, began the violence and consist in part of elements of al qaeda which was created by the US. Hillary Clinton admitted to it and John McCain has called them heros for their part in assisting the MB in Libya. The Syrian debacle is mostly a Muslim feud, but because America wants to continue to buy its oil from the Saudis we are forced to participate on their side.

Russia and China really don't want to get sucked in, which is why Putin is still trying to talk. As long as their client Assad is threatened they are being pulled into it too. This feud is sucking everybody into a Muslim argument.

but that's just me, hollering from the choir loft...
