Many are using the shooting last night as an opportunity to push for or against gun control – we do this every time – and there's no reason for it. It solves nothing. Repeating the same thing over and over again... well...

BUT something like this IS a hell of a good reason to examine our culture. From being "gun happy" to the stigma placed on mental health care that certainly keeps many people from getting help. Funny, I don't see people talking about that much, and seeking solutions – when that is the only thing that will make any difference. We need to work where we are not divided, as that is the ONLY thing that will make any difference.

Or maybe instead, let's just pray something changes!

I understand everyone's frustration but if someone in the audience had a concealed handgun license and was carrying a gun they might have been able to stop this mad man and save lives. I

Yeah, prayer is definitely the answer– it's worked SO well so far..... (sarcasm off now).

Many people with mental illness also don't seek help or refuse to utilize the help that is available to them because they aren't capable of realizing that there actually is a problem. It's not a 'stigma' issue. I've known several people with mental illnesses who don't recognize the difference between normal and abnormal thought processes and behavior, or understand when acting on those thoughts puts them and others into harm's way.

Uh, it's against the law to carry an assault weapon concealed or not concealed. That CCW term is thrown around so much as an acronym people tend to forget what it really means. You can't carry your gun CONCEALED. How would you effectively conceal an assault rifle any way other than a long coat, which is likely going to draw attention in July.....

You can carry a concealed handgun in Mississippi if you have a permit. Whether that applies to larger weapons, I'm not sure. But concealed carry permits are very common. You just can't bring it to the office, school or airplane. Things like that. Lots of people keep guns in their cars or trucks. No laws against that.

This not a debate bewteen gun control or not. You can prevent the sales of all guns and guess what, bad guys will still buy guns. The only difference is that the good people are now called sheep. There is gun control everywhere, it is called morality. He had a prediposed mind set before he evey carried out his evil crime. No gun control law could have ever prevented that. Should of, Would of, Could of... does not apply.

gun control isnt the answer, blaming testosterone isn't the answer, that he was a deranged nut job?!? no. there are no ansers to inhumane, senseless, acts of violence...only this 24 year old white male who was a graduate student has an idea, and i doubt that he even really can make sense of what he has done. i feel an unbelievable sadness for those affected by this tragedy.

I agree with the person(s) who said gun control wouldn't have helped in this situation . . . the perp would have just devised another way to wreak havoc. I also agree with the responder who stated a bunch of folks pulling guns in a situation like occurred last night / this morning would have made the situation MUCH worse. There would have been no way to discern between the primary perp and the armed movie goers.

not quite true. the perp would be lieing on the ground dead, instead ot all the victims that got hurt

There are many possable outcomes playing what if. You say it would have been bad for a bunch of people to pull guns becuase it would be hard to tell good guy from bad. One possible outcome is that a bunch pull guns and stop the guy and save a bunch of lives, then put them away and you then go through the difficult process of figuring out that they are the good guys. That's one possability, it could go bad too. As an idividual, I think i have the right to at least have the opportunity to protect myself if i want. who else is going to? As you can see here, the police were great in there response however, even with that, they got there after he was apparently already out in the parking lot waiting.

I agree, not that my opinion should matter much to anyone right now in the shadow of this terrible event. I know a lot of people from NY to FL and all points in between, here's the common thread. Each state has differing arms control laws in place; the only thing that has changed is the ratio to mad men carrying guns has remained statistically the same. So the bad guys aren't getting their guns from the same place the good guys are getting theirs. Find that out and well be a lot closer to solving this problem.

This guy had priors in before entering this country, as recently as 2006 for assault. He had charges here as well. That information had been collected properly, examined properly and stored in a system that would allow dealers access to that information as to deny sale of weapon because of his criminal past, that might have worked. But the immigration department didn’t deny passage to this country, didn’t notify the dealers that he was a criminal and he managed to get around the approval process.

Now how in the hell do you think that happed? The paper form used to collect information about someone’s cranial past failed. I should remind the non-gun owners that these are near instant approvals from law enforcement. Dealers are audited regularly to make sure they’re tracking the weapons they are selling. These people are dead because the laws were not actively enforced.

If this guy got his gun(s) from a weapons dealer (which is doubtful) then the electronic point of sale approval process (run by law enforce at the federal level) failed. That where this whole thing started with the failure of the systems that was put in place that forced K-mart to pull guns from their inventory for selling ammunition to a kid who later shot a lot of people.

If this guy had waited for the movie to let out and then mowed-over people with his car in the parking lot, over and over, he could have killed just as many people that way. Chasing them in his car, the same way he chased them up the stairs. Would you then ban cars?

Get real, this man was/is a mentally ill nut job. He had an evil fantasy, which he played out. Are you going to ban matches when someone purposely burns down an apartment complex. Are you going to ban wire, when someone makes a bomb to kill a crowd? I don't own a gun, but I am not stupid enough to blame a gun, when any object can be used to kill.

Cars serve a purpose??? they deplete our natural resources, destroy our ozone and climate, and kill over 300,000 people every year in the US. You have a sick and warped philosophy – because you feel the need to go out on a Sunday morning drive this warrants the need or “purpose” of automobiles, to destroy over 300,000 lives every year. I also never said I wouldn’t ban guns I would 100% All types to include staple and nail guns – Banned!
