Case of missing Iowa girls an 'abduction,' police say

The case of two missing Iowa girls is now being called an abduction after the search of a lake near where the cousins were last seen turned up nothing.

"Those girls are not in that lake," Black Hawk County Sheriff's Deputy Rick Abben told reporters Friday. "Obviously, within a week if they were lost they would have been found by now."

"Since we can't find them, they're not in the lake, we're calling it an abduction," Abben said.

Lyric Cook, 10, and her cousin Elizabeth Collins, 8, were last seen by their grandmother on July 13 when they left on a bike ride.

Their bicycles and a purse were found near Meyers Lake hours after they were reported missing.

Scent dogs following the girls' trail led searchers around the lake and stopped at the water's edge, according to Lyric's mother, Misty Cook-Morrissey.

Meanwhile, authorities have searched the home of Cook-Morrissey and Wylma Cook, who is a grandmother to both girls, with the women's consent.

The two women said they also provided investigators with a key to get into the attic.

Investigators confiscated Cook-Morrisey's computers with her consent, she said.

To say our world-as we know it is uglier is not reality. Uglier then what? Case in point- Hansel and Gretel children murdered turn into a folklore to entertain. How bout Jack and Jill ,tragic...? It has always been. The prey on children is historical and no uglier now then b4. We are just livin it.

Judy no offense but the lake is so small that your raft/boat theory holds no water. Were they taken? I think so but certainly not on a boat. Makes more sense that they were abcosted by the lake, knocked out and taken to a vehical which is 50 feet from the waters edge then driven straight out of town on I-380. they aren't reporting it but I know for a fact that they found a bloody shoe at Myers lake. I have insight too. I'm from evansdale.

that's sad. that reminds me of the papergirl in sioux falls, sd. they found her bag in the car wash, and it had blood on it. he buried her in a sand pile. i bet it was the accomplices that had court cases that day or people that sold the parents drugs in the past.

Well ur welcome No Doze. No Problem. Im so glad i could be of some assistance. U know it's probably ur emptyheadedness that keeps u awake. u know the saying "silence is too loud" Well do something constructive like praying for the little girls that are missing and the families involved in the Colorado tragedy, and that the conflict in Siria doesnt escalate into a big giant war in the Middle East and pray for ur salvation and mine and eueryones in this lost and evil world. See u will be asleep in no time. thats the cure for imsonia. God Bless and save ur mortal soul. have a great drowsy weekend!!!

Everone is treating this like the Ramsey case. 2 Little girls are missing and they are probably scared and the police,Feds, and people in general have already made up there minds. The clock is ticking, everyone needs to get off thier ass and look for and follow other leads on these girls.

Unfortunately I think this is a hoax based on the demeanor of the two women who were on the news. I pray that it isn't and the girls will return unharmed. Why not have the dogs sniff to see if another family member was present? Maybe girls were playing in the water and approached by someone. Just sounds a little fishy to me.

I personally think one of the girls fell into the lake...and the other tried to help her. Both drowned. They just have not found them yet. THe only way to say for certain that they are not in there is to drain it completely. I hopethey are alive for their families sake (but they should have not been out riding alone). DOES any of these families not read the news? Or....do they think "it will not happen to me"??? Why would any sane person let their 10 and 8 year old go bike riding alone??? I hope they find them alive so they can learn from their mistake...but it is leaning more and more toward them paying the ultimate price, and I hate it for them. Sad...just sad. :(, I hope they find comofrt and peace.

I really hope they find these girls, my thoughts and prayers to the family. It's a shame they spent a week searching the lake when it seemed pretty clear its an abduction
